Crystalline smectic-B films as fluctuating systems: static and dynamic x-ray scattering

A smectic dodecagonal quasicrystal

We report a solid smectic phase that exhibits dodecagonal global order. It is composed of axially stacked hexagonally ordered particle layers, and its 12-fold rotational symmetry induced by the 30° rotation of adjacent layers with respect to each other. A quasicrystal was produced in a molecular-dynamics simulation of a single-component system of particles interacting via a spherically-symmetric potential. It was formed as a result of a first-order phase transition from an isotropic liquid state that occurred under constant-density cooling. This finding implies that a similarly structured quasicrystal can possibly be produced by the same class of systems as those forming smectic-B crystals. This quasicrystal can also be expected to arise in a system of spherically-shaped colloidal particles with appropriately tuned potential.

Single-molecule diffusion in freely suspended smectic films

We present a study of the molecular diffusion in freely suspended smectic-A liquid crystal films with thicknesses ranging from 20 down to only two molecular layers. The molecular mobility is directly probed by determining the trajectories of single, fluorescent tracer molecules. We demonstrate, using several different smectic compounds, that a monotonic increase of the diffusion coefficient with decreasing film thickness is a general phenomenon. In two-layer films, the diffusion is enhanced by a factor of 3 to 5 compared to the corresponding bulk smectic phase. Molecular dynamics simulations of freely suspended smectic films are presented which support the experimental results.

Formation of the smectic-B crystal from a simple monatomic liquid

We report a molecular dynamics simulation demonstrating that the smectic-B crystalline phase (Cry-B), commonly observed in mesogenic systems of anisotropic molecules, can be formed by a system of identical particles interacting via a spherically symmetric potential. The Cry-B phase forms as a result of a first-order transition from an isotropic liquid phase upon isochoric cooling at appropriate number density. Its structure, determined by the design of the pair potential, corresponds to the Cry-B structure formed by elongated particles with the aspect ratio 1.8. The diffraction pattern and the real-space structure inspection demonstrate dominance of the ABC-type of axial layer stacking. This result opens a general possibility of producing smectic phases using isotropic interparticle interaction both in simulations and in colloidal systems.

Self-assembly of the perfluoroalkyl-alkane F14H20 in ultrathin films

Scanning force microscopy on monomolecular films of eicosylperfluorotetradecane, F(CF(2))(14)(CH(2))(20)H, on mica, silicon oxide, or water revealed spontaneous organization to well-defined nanoscopic ribbon and spiral or toroidal superstructures. Whether ribbons or nanospirals were formed depended on the solvent from which the molecular monofilm was cast. Ribbons were observed when a hydrocarbon or a perfluorocarbon solvent was used, e.g., decalin or perfluorodecalin. When the compound, however, was deposited from nonselective hexafluoroxylene, the molecules assembled into spirals of defined size. The spirals/toroids transformed to ribbons when exposed either to decalin or perfluorodecalin vapor, and the ribbons transformed to toroids when exposed to hexafluoroxylene vapor. These changes could be observed in situ. Scanning force microscopy yielded an identical height and width for the bands forming the spirals and for the parallel flat ribbons. X-ray reflectivity yielded a height of 3.61 +/- 0.05 nm, again identical for both morphologies. Yet, the length of the extended F(CF(2))(14)(CH(2))(20)H molecule, i.e., 4.65 nm, exceeds the layer thickness obtained from X-ray reflectometry. It is, however, consistent with an arrangement where the fluorinated chains are oriented normal to the surface layer and where the alkyl segments are tilted with a 122 degrees angle between the two segments. Within the plane defined by the tilt, this angle allows a dense packing of the alkyl segments compensating for the larger cross-section of the fluorocarbon segment. The tilt plane defines an "easy" direction along which the monolayer structure can preserve order. In the plane perpendicular to this axis, long-range ordered dense packing of the alkyl chains is not possible. Incommensurable packing can in principle explain the finite and regular width of the ribbons and the stepwise turn in the spirals.

Multiple electron diffraction and two-dimensional crystalline order in liquid-crystal thin films

Electron diffraction in freestanding thin films in the crystal-B phase reveals extensive multiple diffraction in films of 14S5 but not of 4O.8, suggesting an important difference in the structural order in these films despite the similarities in their positional correlations found in earlier experiments. The result in a two-layer 14S5 film indicates surprisingly that secondary diffraction can occur in a crystal with only pseudo-long-range positional order.
