Multiple current reversals and diffusion enhancement in a symmetrical periodic potential

Transport and diffusion of Brownian particles in a symmetrical periodic potential were investigated for both overdamped and underdamped cases, where the ratchet potential is driven by an external unbiased time periodic force and correlation between thermal and potential fluctuations. It is shown that the correlation between two noises breaks the symmetry of the potential to generate motion of the Brownian particles in particular direction, and the current can reverse its direction by changing the sign of the noise correlation. For the overdamped case, the systemic parameters only induce the directed current, and the noise correlation suppresses the diffusion of the overdamped Brownian particles. However for the underdamped case, the current reverses its direction multiple times with increasing the systemic parameters, i.e., the multiple current reversal is observed, and the noise negative correlation suppresses the diffusion of the underdamped Brownian particles, while the noise positive correlation enhances it.

Time delay induced transition of gene switch and stochastic resonance in a genetic transcriptional regulatory model

Background

Noise, nonlinear interactions, positive and negative feedbacks within signaling pathways, time delays, protein oligomerization, and crosstalk between different pathways are main characters in the regulatory of gene expression. However, only a single noise source or only delay time in the deterministic model is considered in the gene transcriptional regulatory system in previous researches. The combined effects of correlated noise and time delays on the gene regulatory model still remain not to be fully understood.

Results

The roles of time delay on gene switch and stochastic resonance are systematically explored based on a famous gene transcriptional regulatory model subject to correlated noise. Two cases, including linear time delay appearing in the degradation process (case I) and nonlinear time delay appearing in the synthesis process (case II) are considered, respectively. For case I: Our theoretical results show that time delay can induce gene switch, i.e., the TF-A monomer concentration shifts from the high concentration state to the low concentration state ("on"→"off"). With increasing the time delay, the transition from "on" to "off" state can be further accelerated. Moreover, it is found that the stochastic resonance can be enhanced by both the time delay and correlated noise intensity. However, the additive noise original from the synthesis rate restrains the stochastic resonance. It is also very interesting that a resonance bi-peaks structure appears under large additive noise intensity. The theoretical results by using small-delay time-approximation approach are consistent well with our numerical simulation. For case II: Our numerical simulation results show that time delay can also induce the gene switch, however different with case I, the TF-A monomer concentration shifts from the low concentration state to the high concentration state ("off"→"on"). With increasing time delay, the transition from "on" to "off" state can be further enhanced. Moreover, it is found that the stochastic resonance can be weaken by the time delay.

Conclusions

The stochastic delay dynamic approach can identify key physiological control parameters to which the behavior of special genetic regulatory systems is particularly sensitive. Such parameters might provide targets for pharmacological intervention. Thus, it would be highly interesting to investigate if similar experimental techniques could be used to bring out the delay-induced switch and stochastic resonance in the stochastic gene transcriptional regulatory process.

Thermal-inertial ratchet effects: negative mobility, resonant activation, noise-enhanced stability, and noise-weakened stability

Transport properties of a Brownian particle in thermal-inertial ratchets subject to an external time-oscillatory drive and a constant bias force are investigated. Since the phenomena of negative mobility, resonant activation and noise-enhance stability were reported before, in the present paper, we report some additional aspects of negative mobility, resonant activation and noise-enhance stability, such as the ingredients for the appearances of these phenomena, multiple resonant activation peaks, current reversals, noise-weakened stability, and so on.

Multiplicative cross-correlated noise induced escape rate from a metastable state

We present an analytical framework to study the escape rate from a metastable state under the influence of two external multiplicative cross-correlated noise processes. By starting from a phenomenological stationary Langevin description with multiplicative noise processes, we have investigated the Kramers theory for activated rate processes in a nonequilibrium open system (one dimensional in nature) driven by two external cross-correlated noise processes which are Gaussian, stationary, and delta correlated. Based on the Fokker-Planck description in phase space, we then derive the escape rate from a metastable state in the moderate to large friction limit to study the effect of degree of correlation on the same. By employing numerical simulation in the presence of external cross-correlated additive and multiplicative noises, we check the validity of our analytical formalism for constant dissipation, which shows a satisfactory agreement between both the approaches for the specific choice of noise processes. It is evident both from analytical development and the corresponding numerical simulation that the enhancement of rate is possible by increasing the degree of correlation of the external fluctuations.

Anomalous diffusion for overdamped particles driven by cross-correlated white noise sources

We study the statistical properties of overdamped particles driven by two cross-correlated multiplicative Gaussian white noises in a time-dependent environment. Using the Langevin and Fokker-Planck approaches, we derive the exact probability distribution function for the particle positions, calculate its moments, and find their corresponding long-time, asymptotic behaviors. The generally anomalous diffusive regimes of the particles are classified, and their dependence on the friction coefficient and the characteristics of the noises is analyzed in detail. The asymptotic predictions are confirmed by exact solutions for two examples.

Analysis on the origin of directed current from a class of microscopic chaotic fluctuations

We show that the Perron-Frobenius equation of microscopic chaos based on double symmetric maps leads to an inhomogeneous Smoluchowski equation with a source term. Our perturbative analysis reveals that the source term gives rise to a directed current for a strongly damped particle in a spatially periodic potential. In addition, our result proves that in the zeroth-order limit, the position distribution of the particle obeys the Smoluchowski equation even though the fluctuating force is deterministic.

Nonequilibrium transitions induced by the cross-correlation of white noises

We study the role that the cross-correlation of noises plays in the statistical behavior of systems driven by two multiplicative Gaussian white noises. The temporal evolution of the system is described by a Langevin equation, for which we adopt a general interpretation that includes the Ito as well as the Stratonovich interpretation. We derive the stochastically equivalent Fokker-Planck equation by means of the two-stage averaging of a state-dependent function. Analyzing the stationary solution of the Fokker-Planck equation for specific examples, we show explicitly that the cross-correlation of white noises can induce nonequilibrium transitions.

Noise-assisted classical adiabatic pumping in a symmetric periodic potential

We consider a classical overdamped Brownian particle moving in a symmetric periodic potential. We show that a net particle flow can be produced by adiabatically changing two external periodic potentials with a phase difference phi in time and chi in space. The classical pumped current is found to be independent of the friction and to vanish both in the limit of low and high temperature. Below a critical temperature, adiabatic pumping appears to be more efficient than transport due to a constant external force.
