Abstract
Neutron spin echo experiments on deuterated and protonated molecular liquids with different interactions have revealed their coherent and incoherent scattering functions at the mesoscale. The coherent one decays by a nondiffusive exponential relaxation process that can be related to stress fluctuations. For self-dynamics, we show that even though diffusion is, as expected, the predominant relaxation channel at the mesoscale, the process observed for collective dynamics also appears at short times, evidencing the influence of stress fluctuations on translational motions even at high temperatures.

Abstract
The collective density-density and hydrostatic pressure-pressure correlations of glass-forming liquids are spatiotemporally mapped out using molecular dynamics simulations. It is shown that the sharp rise of structural relaxation time below the Arrhenius temperature coincides with the emergence of slow, nonhydrodynamic collective dynamics on mesoscopic scales. The observed long-range, nonhydrodynamic mode is independent of wave numbers and closely coupled to the local structural dynamics. Below the Arrhenius temperature, it dominates the slow collective dynamics on length scales immediately beyond the first structural peak in contrast to the well-known behavior at high temperatures. These results highlight a key connection between the qualitative change in mesoscopic two-point collective dynamics and the dynamic crossover phenomenon.

Abstract
By using time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy with polarization analysis, we have separated coherent and incoherent contributions to the scattering of deuterated tetrahydrofuran in a wide scattering vector (Q)-range from meso- to inter-molecular length scales. The results are compared with those recently reported for water to address the influence of the nature of inter-molecular interactions (van der Waals vs hydrogen bond) on the dynamics. The phenomenology found is qualitatively similar in both systems. Both collective and self-scattering functions are satisfactorily described in terms of a convolution model that considers vibrations, diffusion, and a Q-independent mode. We observe a crossover in the structural relaxation from being dominated by the Q-independent mode at the mesoscale to being dominated by diffusion at inter-molecular length scales. The characteristic time of the Q-independent mode is the same for collective and self-motions and, contrary to water, faster and with a lower activation energy (≈1.4 Kcal/mol) than the structural relaxation time at inter-molecular length scales. This follows the macroscopic viscosity behavior. The collective diffusive time is well described by the de Gennes narrowing relation proposed for simple monoatomic liquids in a wide Q-range entering the intermediate length scales, in contraposition to the case of water.

Abstract
We present an investigation by molecular dynamics (MD)-simulations of the coherent dynamic structure factor, S(Q, t) (Q: momentum transfer), of liquid water at the mesoscale (0.1 Å-1 ≤ Q ≤ Qmax) [Qmax ≈ 2 Å-1: Q-value of the first maximum of the static structure factor, S(Q), of water]. The simulation cell-large enough to address the collective properties at the mesoscale-is validated by direct comparison with recent results on the dynamic structure factor in the frequency domain obtained by neutron spectroscopy with polarization analysis [Arbe et al., Phys. Rev. Res. 2, 022015 (2020)]. We have not only focused on the acoustic excitations but also on the relaxational contributions to S(Q, t). The analysis of the MD-simulation results-including the self- and distinct contributions to the diffusive part of S(Q, t)-nicely explains why the relaxation process hardly depends on Q in the low Q-range (Q ≤ 0.4 Å-1) and how it crosses over to a diffusion-driven process at Q ≈ Qmax. Our simulations also give support to the main assumptions of the model used to fit the experimental data in the above mentioned paper. The application of such a model to the simulation S(Q, t) data delivers (i) results for the relaxation component of S(Q, t) in agreement with those obtained from neutron experiments and (ii) longitudinal and transverse hydrodynamic-like components with similar features than those identified in previous simulations of the longitudinal and transverse current spectra directly. On the other hand, in general, our MD-simulations results of S(Q, t) qualitatively agree with the viscoelastic transition framework habitually used to describe inelastic x-ray scattering results.

Abstract
The study of liquid dynamics at mesoscopic scales is still strewn with difficulty due to limitations in theory and experiment. Historically, significant attention has been given to the analysis of space-time correlation functions and their frequency-Fourier transforms at a few discrete wave numbers. The massive computing power afforded by modern high performance computing clusters and the advent of a wide-angle neutron spin-echo spectrometer, however, have unlocked a more intuitive and fruitful approach to this problem. Using molecular dynamics simulations, here we demonstrate the benefits of spatiotemporally mapping intermediate scattering functions on a dense grid of correlation times and wave numbers. Four model systems are investigated: a Lennard-Jones liquid, a coarse-grained bead-spring polymer, a molten sodium chloride, and a poly(ethylene oxide) melt. We show that the spatiotemporal mapping approach is particularly useful for elucidating the mesoscopic dynamics in these liquids, where several underlying mechanisms, such as molecular relaxations, hydrodynamic modes, and nonhydrodynamic excitations, are potentially at play. Compared to the traditional method, direct visualization of density space-time correlation functions on two-dimensional color maps permits appraisals of complicated dynamical behavior at mesoscales in a global manner. For example, the scaling relations between space and time for different types of molecular motions can be straightforwardly identified on these plots, without any model-dependent analysis. Additionally, we show how theoretical ideas regarding collective mesoscopic dynamics, such as the classical hydrodynamic theory, the convolution approximation, and a recently proposed phenomenological model, can be discussed in terms of the global features of spatiotemporal maps of intermediate scattering functions. The new perspective offered by the spatiotemporal mapping method should prove useful for the study of liquid dynamics in general.

Abstract
We present fully atomistic molecular dynamics simulations on polyisobutylene (PIB) in a wide temperature range above the glass transition. The cell is validated by direct comparison of magnitudes computed from the simulation and measured by neutron scattering on protonated samples reported in previous works. Once the reliability of the simulation is assured, we exploit the information in the atomic trajectories to characterize the dynamics of the different kinds of atoms in PIB. All of them, including main-chain carbons, show a crossover from Gaussian to non-Gaussian behavior in the intermediate scattering function that can be described in terms of the anomalous jump diffusion model. The full characterization of the methyl-group hydrogen motions requires accounting for rotational motions. We show that the usually assumed statistically independence of rotational and segmental motions fails in this case. We apply the rotational rate distribution model to correlation functions calculated for the relative positions of methyl-group hydrogens with respect to the carbon atom at which they are linked. The contributions to the vibrational density of states are also discussed. We conclude that methyl-group rotations are coupled with the main-chain dynamics. Finally, we revise in the light of the simulations the hypothesis and conclusions made in previously reported neutron scattering investigations on protonated samples trying to address the origin of the dielectric β-process.

Abstract
Combining neutron scattering and fully atomistic molecular dynamics simulations allows unraveling structural and dynamical features of polymer melts at different length scales, mainly in the intermolecular and monomeric range. Here we present the methodology developed by us and the results of its application during the last years in a variety of polymers. This methodology is based on two pillars: (i) both techniques cover approximately the same length and time scales and (ii) the classical van Hove formalism allows easily calculating the magnitudes measured by neutron scattering from the simulated atomic trajectories. By direct comparison with experimental results, the simulated cell is validated. Thereafter, the information of the simulations can be exploited, calculating magnitudes that are experimentally inaccessible or extending the parameters range beyond the experimental capabilities. We show how detailed microscopic insight on structural features and dynamical processes of various kinds has been gained in polymeric systems with different degrees of complexity, and how intriguing questions as the collective behavior at intermediate length scales have been faced.

Abstract
The first eight years of operation of the Cold Neutron Chopper Spectrometer (CNCS) at the Spallation Neutron Source in Oak Ridge is being reviewed. The instrument has been part of the facility user program since 2009, and more than 250 individual user experiments have been performed to date. CNCS is an extremely powerful and versatile instrument and offers leading edge performance in terms of beam intensity, energy resolution, and flexibility to trade one for another. Experiments are being routinely performed with the sample at extreme conditions: T ≲ 0.05 K, p ≳ 2 GPa, and B = 8 T can be achieved individually or in combination. In particular, CNCS is in a position to advance the state of the art with inelastic neutron scattering under pressure, and some of the recent accomplishments in this area will be presented in more detail.

Abstract
Traditionally, polymer melts have been considered archetypal glass-formers. This has been mainly due to the fact that these systems can easily be obtained as glasses by cooling from the melt, even at low cooling rates. However, the macromolecules, i.e. the structural units of polymer systems in general, are rather different from the standard molecules. They are long objects ('chains') made by repetition of a given chemical motif (monomer) and have intra-macromolecular barriers that limit their flexibility. The influence of these properties on, for instance, the glass-transition temperature of polymers, is a topic that has been widely studied by the polymer community almost from the early times of polymer science. However, in the framework of the glass-community, the relevant influence of intra-macromolecular barriers and chain connectivity on glass-transition phenomena of polymers has started to be recognized only recently. The aim of this review is to give an overview and to critically revise the results reported on this topic over the last years. From these results, it seems to be evident that there are two different mechanisms involved in the dynamic arrest in glass-forming polymers: (i) the intermolecular packing effects, which dominate the dynamic arrest of low molecular weight glass-forming systems; and (ii) the effect of intra-macromolecular barriers combined with chain connectivity. It has also been shown that the mode coupling theory (MCT) is a suitable theoretical framework to discuss these questions. The values found for polymers for the central MCT parameter--the so-called λ-exponent--are of the order of 0.9, clearly higher than the standard values (λ ≈ 0.7) found in systems where the dynamic arrest is mainly driven by packing effects ('standard' glass-formers). Within the MCT, this is a signature of the presence of two competing mechanisms of dynamic arrest, as it has been observed in short-ranged attractive colloids or two component mixtures with dynamic asymmetry. Moreover, recent MD-simulations of a 'bead-spring' polymer model, but including intra-macromolecular potential of different strengths, confirm that the high λ-values found in polymers are due to the effect of intra-macromolecular barriers. Although there are still open questions, these results allow to conclude that there is a fundamental difference between the nature of the glass transition in polymers and in simple (standard) glass-formers.

Abstract
The aging dynamics of a colloidal glass has been studied by multiangle dynamic light scattering, neutron spin echo, X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations. The two relaxation processes, microscopic (fast) and structural (slow), have been investigated in an unprecedentedly wide range of time and length scales covering both ergodic and nonergodic regimes. The microscopic relaxation time remains diffusive at all length scales across the glass transition scaling with wavevector Q as Q(-2). The length-scale dependence of structural relaxation time changes from diffusive, characterized by a Q(-2)-dependence in the early stages of aging, to a Q(-1)-dependence in the full aging regime which marks a discontinuous hopping dynamics. Both regimes are associated with a stretched behaviour of the correlation functions. We expect these findings to provide a general description of both relaxations across the glass transition.

Abstract
Still very little is known on the relaxation dynamics of glasses at the microscopic level due to the lack of experiments and theories. It is commonly believed that glasses are in a dynamical arrested state, with relaxation times too large to be observed on human time scales. Here we provide the experimental evidence that glasses display fast atomic rearrangements within a few minutes, even in the deep glassy state. Following the evolution of the structural relaxation in a sodium silicate glass, we find that this fast dynamics is accompanied by the absence of any detectable aging, suggesting a decoupling of the relaxation time and the viscosity in the glass. The relaxation time is strongly affected by the network structure with a marked increase at the mesoscopic scale associated with the ion-conducting pathways. Our results modify the conception of the glassy state and asks for a new microscopic theory.

Abstract
The applicability of Mode Coupling Theory (MCT) to the glass-forming polymer polyisobutylene (PIB) has been explored by using fully atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. MCT predictions for the so-called asymptotic regime have been successfully tested on the dynamic structure factor and the self-correlation function of PIB main-chain carbons calculated from the simulated cell. The factorization theorem and the time-temperature superposition principle are satisfied. A consistent fitting procedure of the simulation data to the MCT asymptotic power-laws predicted for the α-relaxation regime has delivered the dynamic exponents of the theory-in particular, the exponent parameter λ-the critical non-ergodicity parameters, and the critical temperature T(c). The obtained values of λ and T(c) agree, within the uncertainties involved in both studies, with those deduced from depolarized light scattering experiments [A. Kisliuk et al., J. Polym. Sci. Part B: Polym. Phys. 38, 2785 (2000)]. Both, λ and T(c)/T(g) values found for PIB are unusually large with respect to those commonly obtained in low molecular weight systems. Moreover, the high T(c)/T(g) value is compatible with a certain correlation of this parameter with the fragility in Angell's classification. Conversely, the value of λ is close to that reported for real polymers, simulated "realistic" polymers and simple polymer models with intramolecular barriers. In the framework of the MCT, such finding should be the signature of two different mechanisms for the glass-transition in real polymers: intermolecular packing and intramolecular barriers combined with chain connectivity.

Abstract
By combining, and modestly extending, a variety of theoretical concepts for the dynamics of liquids in the supercooled regime, we formulate a simple analytic model for the temperature and wavevector dependent collective density fluctuation relaxation time that is measurable using coherent dynamic neutron scattering. Comparison with experiments on the ionic glass-forming liquid Ca-K-NO3 in the lightly supercooled regime suggests the model captures the key physics in both the local cage and mesoscopic regimes, including the unusual wavevector dependence of the collective structural relaxation time. The model is consistent with the idea that the decoupling between diffusion and viscosity is reflected in a different temperature dependence of the collective relaxation time at intermediate wavevectors and near the main (cage) peak of the static structure factor. More generally, our analysis provides support for the ideas that decoupling information and growing dynamic length scales can be at least qualitatively deduced by analyzing the collective relaxation time as a function of temperature and wavevector, and that there is a strong link between dynamic heterogeneity phenomena at the single and many particle level. Though very simple, the model can be applied to other systems, such as molecular liquids.

Abstract
We present a quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) investigation of the component dynamics in an aqueous Poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME) solution (30% water content in weight). In the glassy state, an important shift in the Boson peak of PVME is found upon hydration. At higher temperatures, the diffusive-like motions of the components take place with very different characteristic times, revealing a strong dynamic asymmetry that increases with decreasing T. For both components, we observe stretching of the scattering functions with respect to those in the bulk and non-Gaussian behavior in the whole momentum transfer range investigated. To explain these observations we invoke a distribution of mobilities for both components, probably originated from structural heterogeneities. The diffusive-like motion of PVME in solution takes place faster and apparently in a more continuous way than in bulk. We find that the T-dependence of the characteristic relaxation time of water changes at T ≲ 225 K, near the temperature where a crossover from a low temperature Arrhenius to a high temperature cooperative behavior has been observed by broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) [S. Cerveny, J. Colmenero and A. Alegría, Macromolecules, 38, 7056 (2005)]. This observation might be a signature of the onset of confined dynamics of water due to the freezing of the PVME dynamics, that has been selectively followed by these QENS experiments. On the other hand, revisiting the BDS results on this system we could identify an additional "fast" process that can be attributed to water motions coupled with PVME local relaxations that could strongly affect the QENS results. Both kinds of interpretations, confinement effects due to the increasing dynamic asymmetry and influence of localized motions, could provide alternative scenarios to the invoked "strong-to-fragile" transition.

Abstract
By means of time-of-flight neutron scattering, we have characterized the dynamic structure factor and the hydrogen motions of polyethylene above its melting point. As signatures of simple-liquid dynamics, we observe that (i) in the explored dynamic window, the intermediate scattering functions display a single-step decay, without reminiscence of cage effects, and (ii) the structural relaxation as observed at the intermolecular structure factor peak shows a weak temperature dependence, indicating a low degree of interchain cooperativity. However, stretched functional forms are observed for all length scales and temperatures investigated. An apparent direct crossover from the microscopic regime to Rouse-like dynamics suggests an essential role of connectivity in the observed stretching. Finally, while at momentum-transfer values above the structure factor peak the relation between coherent and incoherent characteristic times is reasonably described by the de Gennes narrowing, at larger length scales it is not reproduced by any existing approach.

Abstract
We present fully atomistic molecular dynamics simulations on 1,4-polybutadiene in a wide temperature range from 200 to 280 K, i.e., in the region where the alpha- and beta-relaxations merge and above. A big computational effort has been performed-especially for the lowest temperatures investigated-to extend the simulation runs to very long times (up to 1 mus for 200 K). The simulated sample has been carefully validated by using previous neutron scattering data on the real sample with similar microstructure. Inspecting the trajectories of the different hydrogens in real space, we have observed a heterogeneous dynamical behavior (each kind of hydrogen moves in a different way) with signatures of combined hopping and diffusive motions in the whole range investigated. The application of a previously proposed model [Colmenero et al., Europhys. Lett. 71, 262 (2005)] is successful and a characterization of the local motions and diffusion is possible. The comparison of our results to those reported in the literature provides a consistent scenario for polybutadiene dynamics and puts into a context the different experimental observations. We also discuss the impact of the hopping processes on the observation and interpretation of experimentally accessible magnitudes and the origin of the deviations from Gaussian behavior in this system.

Abstract
We report on quantitative comparisons between simulation results of a bead-spring model and mode-coupling theory calculations for the structural and conformational dynamics of a supercooled, unentangled polymer melt. We find semiquantitative agreement between simulation and theory, except for processes that occur on intermediate length scales between the compressibility plateau and the amorphous halo of the static structure factor. Our results suggest that the onset of slow relaxation in a glass-forming melt can be described in terms of monomer caging supplemented by chain connectivity. Furthermore, a unified atomistic description of glassy arrest and of conformational fluctuations that (asymptotically) follow the Rouse model emerges from our theory.

Abstract
Functionalized low-molecular-weight polyisoputylene is commonly used as a lubricant additive to control low-velocity friction in clutches. The friction of tethered monolayers as a function of temperature and velocity was examined using lateral force microscopy. The friction force was found to obey time-temperature superposition, which indicates that the friction originates from a single relaxation mode. The scaling factors are identical to those obtained from neutron spin echo experiments of alpha-relaxations, linking the friction directly to segmental motion.

Abstract
Molecular simulation is used to characterize the spatial dependence of collective motion in four saturated hydrocarbon polymers. The observable is the distinct intermediate scattering function, as measured in coherent quasielastic neutron scattering experiments. Ranges of 0.01-1000 ps in time and 2-14 A in spatial scale are covered. In this time range, a two-step relaxation, consisting of a fast exponential decay and a slower stretched decay, is observed for all spatial scales. The relaxation times for the fast process are very similar to those obtained by following self motion, with a small modulation of relaxation times near the peak in the static structure factor which is well described by the narrowing picture suggested by de Gennes. For the slow process, self and collective relaxation times have larger numerical differences and follow different scaling with spatial scale. The modulation of slow relaxation times is larger than that observed for the fast process, but is overestimated by the de Gennes prediction, which only works qualitatively.

Abstract
We present neutron spin echo and structural measurements on a perdeuterated miscible polymer blend: poly(ethylene oxide)[PEO]/poly(methyl methacrylate)[PMMA], characterized by a large difference in component glass transition temperatures and minimal interactions. The measurements cover the q range 0.35 to 1.66 A(-1) and the temperature range Tg -75 to Tg +89 K, where Tg is the blend glass transition. The spectra, obtained directly in the time domain, are very broad with stretching parameters beta approximately 0.30. The relaxation times vary considerably over the spatial range considered however at none of the q values do we see two distinct relaxation times. At small spatial scales relaxations are still detectable at temperatures far below Tg. The temperature dependence of these relaxation times strongly resembles the beta-relaxation process observed in pure PMMA.
