Spontaneous Core Rotation in Ferrofluid Pipe Flow

Ferrofluid flow along a tube of radius R in a constant axial magnetic field is revisited. Our analytical solution and numerical simulations predict a transition from an initially axial flow to a steady swirling one. The swirl dynamo arises above some critical pressure drop and magnetic field strength. The new flow pattern consists of two phases of different symmetry: The flow in the core resembles Poiseuille flow in a rotating tube of the radius r_{*}<R, where each fluid element moves along a screw path, and the annular layer of the thickness R-r_{*}, where the flow remains purely axial. These phases are separated by a thin domain wall. The swirl appearance is accompanied with a sharp increase in the flow rate that might serve for the detection of the swirling instability.

Liquid flow focused by a gas: jetting, dripping, and recirculation

The liquid cone-jet mode can be produced upon stimulation by a coflowing gas sheath. Most applications deal with the jet breakup, leading to either of two droplet generation regimes: Jetting and dripping. The cone-jet flow pattern is explored by direct axisymmetric volume of fluid (VOF) numerical simulation; its evolution is studied as the liquid flow rate is increased around the jetting-dripping transition. As observed in other focused flows such as electrospraying cones upon steady thread emission, the flow displays a strong recirculating pattern within the conical meniscus; it is shown to play a role on the stability of the system, being a precursor to the onset of dripping. Close to the minimum liquid flow rate for steady jetting, the recirculation cell penetrates into the feed tube. Both the jet diameter and the size of the cell are accurately estimated by a simple theoretical model. In addition, the transition from jetting to dripping is numerically analyzed in detail in some illustrative cases, and compared, to good agreement, with a set of experiments.

Eccentric Phenomena at Liquid Mercury Electrode/Solution Interfaces: Upward, Downward, and Circular Motions

The present paper describes a visualization of unidirectional and circular motions triggered by an electrochemical redox reaction at a charged, bent, and streamed liquid electrode/liquid solution interface. The novel circular motion that induces a conversion of electrochemical energy into mechanical energy could be visualized for the first time at a hanging mercury drop electrode (HMDE)/dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solution interface via the electrochromic reaction of 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (BTD) by using a CCD-color video camera. The observed motions are self-insisting in nature and are tunable into upward, downward, clockwise, and anticlockwise ones by an appropriate choice of the experimental conditions. This circular motion is visualized for the first time as the cause of the well-known cyclic voltammetric anodic current oscillation at the HMDE. Several small perturbations, for example, surface tension, surface motion, bulk motion, diffusional mass transport, and surface electrochemical potential are considered to be endlessly amplified by their coupling in a cyclic chain, resulting in such macroscopic motions at the electrode/solution interface. All of the phenomena can be explained on the basis of the modern theory proposed by Aogaki et al. for the polarographic streaming maxima of the first kind.
