Raman forward scattering and self-modulation of laser pulses in tapered plasma channels

Raman scattering of intense, short laser pulses in modulated plasmas

We examine the exponentiation of the Raman forward scattering instability in modulated plasma channels computationally and analytically. An evolution equation for the complex phases of the Raman scattered waves treating the spatial localization and discrete nature of the channel modes is derived. Simulations with WAKE [P. Mora and T. M. Antonsen Jr., Phys. Plasmas 4, 217 (1997)] verify the theory in the linear growth regime and provide insight into the nonlinear stage of the instability when cascading and pump depletion play a role. We find that the exponentiation in modulated channels depends on two factors: the increase in coupling due to the increased plasma wavenumber in the high-density regions of the channel and a decreased coupling due to the reduced longitudinal spatial coherence. For the parameters considered, simulations show that the finite extent of the pump pulse is more significant in determining the exponentiation than phase mixing due to the transverse variation of the channel. Both the theory and simulations confirm that modulated channels allow for the stable guiding of longer pulses than nonmodulated channels.

Basic concepts in plasma accelerators

In this article, we present the underlying physics and the present status of high gradient and high-energy plasma accelerators. With the development of compact short pulse high-brightness lasers and electron and positron beams, new areas of studies for laser/particle beam-matter interactions is opening up. A number of methods are being pursued vigorously to achieve ultra-high-acceleration gradients. These include the plasma beat wave accelerator (PBWA) mechanism which uses conventional long pulse ( approximately 100 ps) modest intensity lasers (I approximately 10(14)-10(16) W cm(-2)), the laser wakefield accelerator (LWFA) which uses the new breed of compact high-brightness lasers (<1 ps) and intensities >10(18) W cm(-2), self-modulated laser wakefield accelerator (SMLWFA) concept which combines elements of stimulated Raman forward scattering (SRFS) and electron acceleration by nonlinear plasma waves excited by relativistic electron and positron bunches the plasma wakefield accelerator. In the ultra-high intensity regime, laser/particle beam-plasma interactions are highly nonlinear and relativistic, leading to new phenomenon such as the plasma wakefield excitation for particle acceleration, relativistic self-focusing and guiding of laser beams, high-harmonic generation, acceleration of electrons, positrons, protons and photons. Fields greater than 1 GV cm(-1) have been generated with monoenergetic particle beams accelerated to about 100 MeV in millimetre distances recorded. Plasma wakefields driven by both electron and positron beams at the Stanford linear accelerator centre (SLAC) facility have accelerated the tail of the beams.

Self-compression of laser pulses in plasma

We study self-compression of weakly relativistically intense laser pulses in subcritical plasmas using one- (1D) and three-dimensional (3D) direct particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. The self-compression works in the density window from 1/4 critical to slightly below critical density, where the Raman instability is prohibited. An analytical model is developed to describe the self-compression. The model admits pulsing Gaussian solutions and a long-lived running soliton solution. The 1D PIC results agree well with the analytical model, and compressions by an order of magnitude are observed. In the 3D geometry, the longitudinal self-compression competes with the transverse self-focusing/filamentation. To damp the filamentation we use a periodic plasma-vacuum structure. The 3D PIC simulations suggest that a 30 fs long laser pulse is efficiently compressed to 5 fs.

Asymmetric self-phase modulation and compression of short laser pulses in plasma channels

A relativistically intense femtosecond laser pulse propagating in a plasma channel undergoes dramatic photon deceleration while propagating a distance on the order of a dephasing length. The deceleration of photons is localized to the back of the pulse and is accompanied by compression and explosive growth of the ponderomotive potential. Fully explicit particle-in-cell simulations are applied to the problem and are compared with ponderomotive guiding center simulations. A numerical Wigner transform is used to examine local frequency shifts within the pulse and to suggest an experimental diagnostic of plasma waves inside a capillary.
