Relativistic electron dynamics in intense crossed laser beams: acceleration and Compton harmonics

Laser-Induced Linear-Field Particle Acceleration in Free Space

Linear-field particle acceleration in free space (which is distinct from geometries like the linac that requires components in the vicinity of the particle) has been studied for over 20 years, and its ability to eventually produce high-quality, high energy multi-particle bunches has remained a subject of great interest. Arguments can certainly be made that linear-field particle acceleration in free space is very doubtful given that first-order electron-photon interactions are forbidden in free space. Nevertheless, we chose to develop an accurate and truly predictive theoretical formalism to explore this remote possibility when intense, few-cycle electromagnetic pulses are used in a computational experiment. The formalism includes exact treatment of Maxwell’s equations and exact treatment of the interaction among the multiple individual particles at near and far field. Several surprising results emerge. We find that electrons interacting with intense laser pulses in free space are capable of gaining substantial amounts of energy that scale linearly with the field amplitude. For example, 30 keV electrons (2.5% energy spread) are accelerated to 61 MeV (0.5% spread) and to 205 MeV (0.25% spread) using 250 mJ and 2.5 J lasers respectively. These findings carry important implications for our understanding of ultrafast electron-photon interactions in strong fields.

Fields of a focused linearly polarized Gaussian beam: truncated series versus the complex-source-point spherical-wave representation

Fields of a linearly polarized fundamental Gaussian beam are derived exactly using the propagation characteristics of a complex-source-point spherical wave diverging from the origin. Intensity distributions are calculated and compared with their counterparts in a truncated series. It is found that utility of the exact fields is limited by a discontinuity inherent in the vector potential from which they have been obtained.

Fields of a radially polarized Gaussian laser beam beyond the paraxial approximation

Analytic expressions for the fields of a tightly focused radially polarized Gaussian laser beam are derived, accurate to epsilon5, where epsilon is the associated diffraction angle. The fields satisfy Maxwell's equations, and the calculated beam power based on them is significantly different from that of the paraxial-approximation fields.

Laser acceleration of electrons to giga-electron-volt energies using highly charged ions

The recent proposal to use highly charged ions as sources of electrons for laser acceleration [S. X. Hu and A. F. Starace, Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 245003 (2002)] is investigated here in detail by means of three-dimensional, relativistic Monte Carlo simulations for a variety of system parameters, such as laser pulse duration, ionic charge state, and laser focusing spot size. Realistic laser focusing effects--e.g., the existence of longitudinal laser field components-are taken into account. Results of spatial averaging over the laser focus are also presented. These numerical simulations show that the proposed scheme for laser acceleration of electrons from highly charged ions is feasible with current or near-future experimental conditions and that electrons with GeV energies can be obtained in such experiments.

Thomson scattering and ponderomotive intermodulation within standing laser beat waves in plasma

Electrons in a standing electromagnetic wave--an optical lattice--tend to oscillate due to the quiver and ponderomotive potentials. For sufficiently intense laser fields (Ilamda2 approximately < or = 5 x 10(17) W cm(-2) microm2) and in plasmas with sufficiently low electron densities (n approximately < or = 10(18) cm(-3)), these oscillations can occur faster than the plasma can respond. This paper shows that these oscillations result in Thomson scattering of light at both the laser and ponderomotive bounce frequencies and their harmonics as well as at mixtures of these frequencies. We term this mixing ponderomotive intermodulation. Here, the case of counterpropagating laser beams creating a one-dimensional (1D) optical lattice is analyzed. The near-equilibrium electron orbits and subsequent Thomson scattering patterns are computed in the single-particle limit. Scaling laws are derived to quantify the range of validity of this approach. Finally, collective plasma and laser focusing effects are included by using particle-in-cell (PIC) techniques. This effect resulting in light-frequency conversion has applications both as an infrared light source and as a means to diagnose high laser intensities inside dense plasmas.
