Nonresonant beat-wave excitation of relativistic plasma waves with constant phase velocity for charged-particle acceleration

Self-channeling of a multi-Joule 10 µm picosecond pulse train through long distances in air

In the long-wave infrared (LWIR) range, where, due to wavelength scaling, the critical power of Kerr self-focusing Pcr in air increases to 300-400 GW, we demonstrate that without external focusing a train of picosecond CO2 laser pulses can propagate in the form of a single several-centimeter diameter channel over hundreds of meters. The train of 10 µm pulses, for which the total energy ≥20 J is distributed over several near-terawatt picosecond pulses with a maximum power ≤2Pcr, is generated naturally during short pulse amplification in a CO2 laser. It is observed that the high-power 10 µm beam forms a large diameter "hot gas" channel in the ambient air with a ≥ 50 ms lifetime. Simulations of the experiment show that such filamentation-free self-channeling regime has low propagation losses and can deliver multi-Joule/TW-power LWIR pulses over km-scale distances.

Transition from wakefield generation to soliton formation

It is well known that when a short laser pulse propagates in an underdense plasma, it induces longitudinal plasma oscillations at the plasma frequency after the pulse, typically referred to as the wakefield. However, for plasma densities approaching the critical density, wakefield generation is suppressed, and instead the EM-pulse (electromagnetic pulse) undergoes nonlinear self-modulation. In this article we have studied the transition from the wakefield generation to formation of quasi-solitons as the plasma density is increased. For this purpose we have applied a one-dimensional relativistic cold fluid model, which has also been compared with particle-in-cell simulations. A key result is that the energy loss of the EM-pulse due to wakefield generation has its maximum for a plasma density of the order 10% of the critical density, but that wakefield generation is sharply suppressed when the density is increased further.

Measurements of the nonlinear refractive index of air, N2, and O2 at 10 μm using four-wave mixing

We report on measurements of the nonlinear index of refraction of air, N₂, and O₂ at a wavelength close to 10 μm by collinear four-wave mixing of a 200 MW CO₂ laser beat-wave. The use of a 200 ps long beat-wave comprising radiation amplified on the 10P20 and 10R16 lines of the CO₂ laser provides a sensitive method to measure the small nonlinearities characteristic of the gas phase in a spectral region where no such data exists.

All-optical suppression of relativistic self-focusing of laser beams in plasmas

It is demonstrated that a catastrophic relativistic self-focusing (RSF) of a high-power laser pulse can be prevented all-optically by a second, much weaker, copropagating pulse. RSF suppression occurs when the difference frequency of the pulses slightly exceeds the electron plasma frequency. The mutual defocusing is caused by the three-dimensional electron density perturbation driven by the laser beat wave slightly above the plasma resonance. A bienvelope model describing the early stage of the mutual defocusing is derived and analyzed. Later stages, characterized by the presence of a strong electromagnetic cascade, are investigated numerically. Stable propagation of the laser pulse with weakly varying spot size and peak amplitude over several Rayleigh lengths is predicted.

Nonlinear evolution of the plasma beat wave: Compressing the laser beat notes via electromagnetic cascading

The near-resonant beat wave excitation of an electron plasma wave (EPW) can be employed for generating the trains of few-femtosecond electromagnetic (EM) pulses in rarefied plasmas. The EPW produces a comoving index grating that induces a laser phase modulation at the difference frequency. As a result, the cascade of sidebands red and blue shifted by integer multiples of the beat frequency is generated in the laser spectrum. The bandwidth of the phase-modulated laser is proportional to the product of the plasma length, laser wavelength, and amplitude of the electron density perturbation. When the beat frequency is lower than the electron plasma frequency, the redshifted spectral components are advanced in time with respect to the blueshifted ones near the center of each laser beat note. The group velocity dispersion of plasma compresses so chirped beat notes to a few-laser-cycle duration thus creating a train of sharp EM spikes with the beat periodicity. Depending on the plasma and laser parameters, chirping and compression can be implemented either concurrently in the same, or sequentially in different plasmas. Evolution of the laser beat wave and electron density perturbations is described in time and one spatial dimension in a weakly relativistic approximation. Using the compression effect, we demonstrate that the relativistic bistability regime of the EPW excitation [G. Shvets, Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 195004 (2004)] can be achieved with the initially subthreshold beat wave pulse.

Robust autoresonant excitation in the plasma beat-wave accelerator

A modified version of the plasma beat-wave accelerator scheme is proposed, based on autoresonant phase locking of the Langmuir wave to the slowly chirped beat frequency of the driving lasers by passage through resonance. Peak electric fields above standard detuning limits seem readily attainable, and the plasma wave excitation is robust to large variations in plasma density or chirp rate. This scheme might be implemented in existing chirped pulse amplification or CO2 laser systems.
