Vector solitons with an embedded domain wall

Stability analysis of nonlinear localized modes in the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations with [Formula: see text] -symmetric Scarf-II potential

We study the nonlinear localized modes in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with parity-time-symmetric Scarf-II potential, which can be described by the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. Firstly, we investigate the linear stability of the nonlinear modes in the focusing and defocusing cases, and get the stable and unstable domains of nonlinear localized modes. Then we validate the results by evolving them with 5% perturbations as an initial condition. Finally, we get stable solitons by considering excitations of the soliton via adiabatical change of system parameters. These findings of nonlinear modes can be potentially applied to physical experiments of matter waves in Bose-Einstein condensates.

Solitons and rogue waves in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

We present a general classification of one-soliton solutions as well as families of rogue-wave solutions for F=1 spinor Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). These solutions are obtained from the inverse scattering transform for a focusing matrix nonlinear Schrödinger equation which models condensates in the case of attractive mean-field interactions and ferromagnetic spin-exchange interactions. In particular, we show that when no background is present, all one-soliton solutions are reducible via unitary transformations to a combination of oppositely polarized solitonic solutions of single-component BECs. On the other hand, we show that when a nonzero background is present, not all matrix one-soliton solutions are reducible to a simple combination of scalar solutions. Finally, by taking suitable limits of all the solutions on a nonzero background we also obtain three families of rogue-wave (i.e., rational) solutions.

Domain walls and vortices in linearly coupled systems

We investigate one- and two-dimensional radial domain-wall (DW) states in the system of two nonlinear-Schrödinger (NLS) or Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equations, which are couple by linear mixing and by nonlinear XPM (cross-phase-modulation). The system has straightforward applications to two-component Bose-Einstein condensates, and to bimodal light propagation in nonlinear optics. In the former case the two components represent different hyperfine atomic states, while in the latter setting they correspond to orthogonal polarizations of light. Conditions guaranteeing the stability of flat continuous wave (CW) asymmetric bimodal states are established, followed by the study of families of the corresponding DW patterns. Approximate analytical solutions for the DWs are found near the point of the symmetry-breaking bifurcation of the CW states. An exact DW solution is produced for ratio 3:1 of the XPM and SPM (self-phase modulation) coefficients. The DWs between flat asymmetric states, which are mirror images of each other, are completely stable, and all other species of the DWs, with zero crossings in one or two components, are fully unstable. Interactions between two DWs are considered too, and an effective potential accounting for the attraction between them is derived analytically. Direct simulations demonstrate merger and annihilation of the interacting DWs. The analysis is extended for the system including single- and double-peak external potentials. Generic solutions for trapped DWs are obtained in a numerical form, and their stability is investigated. An exact stable solution is found for the DW trapped by a single-peak potential. In the 2D geometry, stable two-component vortices are found, with topological charges s=1,2,3. Radial oscillations of annular DW-shaped pulsons, with s=0,1,2, are studied too. A linear relation between the period of the oscillations and the mean radius of the DW ring is derived analytically.

Nonlinear mode coupling and resonant excitations in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

Nonlinear excitations in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) described by two coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations are investigated analytically and numerically. The beating phenomenon, the higher-harmonic generation, and the mixing of the excited modes are revealed by both variational approximation and numerical method. The strong excitations induced by the parametric resonance are also studied by time-periodic modulation for the intercomponent interaction. The resonance conditions in terms of the modulation frequency and the strength of intercomponent interaction are obtained analytically, which are confirmed by numerical method. Direct numerical simulations show that, when the resonance takes place, periodic phase separation and multisoliton configurations (including soliton trains, soliton pairs, and multidomain walls) can be excited. In particular, we demonstrate a method for formation of multisoliton configurations through parametric resonance in two-component BECs.

Symmetry breaking in linearly coupled dynamical lattices

We examine one- and two-dimensional models of linearly coupled lattices of the discrete-nonlinear-Schrödinger type. Analyzing ground states of the system with equal powers (norms) in the two components, we find a symmetry-breaking phenomenon beyond a critical value of the total power. Asymmetric states, with unequal powers in their components, emerge through a subcritical pitchfork bifurcation, which, for very weakly coupled lattices, changes into a supercritical one. We identify the stability of various solution branches. Dynamical manifestations of the symmetry breaking are studied by simulating the evolution of the unstable branches. The results present the first example of spontaneous symmetry breaking in two-dimensional lattice solitons. This feature has no counterpart in the continuum limit because of the collapse instability in the latter case.

Discrete vector solitons in one-dimensional lattices in photorefractive media

We construct families of two-component spatial solitons in a one-dimensional lattice with saturable on-site nonlinearity (focusing or defocusing) in a photorefractive crystal. We identify 14 species of vector solitons, depending on their type (bright/dark), phase (in-phase/staggered), and location on the lattice (on/off-site). Two species of the bright/bright type form entirely stable soliton families, four species are partially stable (depending on the value of the propagation constant), while the remaining eight species are completely unstable. "Symbiotic" soliton pairs (of the bright/dark type), which contain components that cannot exist in isolation in the same model, are found as well.

Two-dimensional solitons in the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with spatially modulated nonlinearity

We introduce a dynamical model of a Bose-Einstein condensate based on the two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation, in which the nonlinear coefficient is a function of radius. The model describes a situation with spatial modulation of the negative atomic scattering length, via the Feshbach resonance controlled by a properly shaped magnetic of optical field. We focus on the configuration with the nonlinear coefficient different from zero in a circle or annulus, including the case of a narrow ring. Two-dimensional axisymmetric solitons are found in a numerical form, and also by means of a variational approximation; for an infinitely narrow ring, the soliton is found in an exact form (in the latter case, exact solitons are also found in a two-component model). A stability region for the solitons is identified by means of numerical and analytical methods. In particular, if the nonlinearity is supported on the annulus, the upper stability border is determined by azimuthal perturbations; the stability region disappears if the ratio of the inner and outer radii of the annulus exceeds a critical value . The model gives rise to bistability, as the stationary solitons coexist with stable axisymmetric breathers, whose stability region extends to higher values of the norm than that of the static solitons. The collapse threshold strongly increases with the radius of the inner hole of the annulus. Vortex solitons are found too, but they are unstable.
