Voronoi neighbor statistics of homogeneously sheared inelastic hard disks and hard spheres

Local area distribution of quasi-2D colloidal dispersions and its relation to particle diffusion: a Voronoi tessellation approach

The dynamical properties of the local area available per particle and its relationship with the self-diffusion coefficient of colloids in quasi-2D colloidal dispersions are studied using video microscopy, supported by Brownian dynamics simulations. The local area is determined via the well-known Voronoi tessellation technique. Our findings reveal that local areas per particle are highly dispersed, exhibiting slow dynamics over time. Additionally, the evolution of the ensemble-averaged area distribution as a function of concentration shows a long tail at large and small areas for low and high concentrations, respectively, leading to a maximum in information entropy when the distribution becomes symmetric. We introduce and analyze several expressions for local area-weighted diffusion coefficients. Notably, we find that the contribution of the averaged diffusion coefficient can be expressed in terms of local areas, establishing a new framework to determine the weighted influence of each local area on particle dynamics.

Effect of particle stiffness on contact dynamics and rheology in a dense granular flow

Dense granular flows have been well described by the Bagnold rheology, even when the particles are in the multibody contact regime and the coordination number is greater than 1. This is surprising, because the Bagnold law should be applicable only in the instantaneous collision regime, where the time between collisions is much larger than the period of a collision. Here, the effect of particle stiffness on rheology is examined. It is found that there is a rheological threshold between a particle stiffness of 10^{4}-10^{5} for the linear contact model and 10^{5}-10^{6} for the Hertzian contact model above which Bagnold rheology (stress proportional to square of the strain rate) is valid and below which there is a power-law rheology, where all components of the stress and the granular temperature are proportional to a power of the strain rate that is less then 2. The system is in the multibody contact regime at the rheological threshold. However, the contact energy per particle is less than the kinetic energy per particle above the rheological threshold, and it becomes larger than the kinetic energy per particle below the rheological threshold. The distribution functions for the interparticle forces and contact energies are also analyzed. The distribution functions are invariant with height, but they do depend on the contact model. The contact energy distribution functions are well fitted by Gamma distributions. There is a transition in the shape of the distribution function as the particle stiffness is decreased from 10^{7} to 10^{6} for the linear model and 10^{8} to 10^{7} for the Hertzian model, when the contact number exceeds 1. Thus, the transition in the distribution function correlates to the contact regime threshold from the binary to multibody contact regime, and is clearly different from the rheological threshold. An order-disorder transition has recently been reported in dense granular flows. The Bagnold rheology applies for both the ordered and disordered states, even though the rheological constants differ by orders of magnitude. The effect of particle stiffness on the order-disorder transition is examined here. It is found that when the particle stiffness is above the rheological threshold, there is an order-disorder transition as the base roughness is increased. The order-disorder transition disappears after the crossover to the soft-particle regime when the particle stiffness is decreased below the rheological threshold, indicating that the transition is a hard-particle phenomenon.

Marginal stability in jammed packings: quasicontacts and weak contacts

Maximally random jammed (MRJ) sphere packing is a prototypical example of a system naturally poised at the margin between underconstraint and overconstraint. This marginal stability has traditionally been understood in terms of isostaticity, the equality of the number of mechanical contacts and the number of degrees of freedom. Quasicontacts, pairs of spheres on the verge of coming in contact, are irrelevant for static stability, but they come into play when considering dynamic stability, as does the distribution of contact forces. We show that the effects of marginal dynamic stability, as manifested in the distributions of quasicontacts and weak contacts, are consequential and nontrivial. We study these ideas first in the context of MRJ packing of d-dimensional spheres, where we show that the abundance of quasicontacts grows at a faster rate than that of contacts. We reexamine a calculation of Jin et al. [Phys. Rev. E 82, 051126 (2010)], where quasicontacts were originally neglected, and we explore the effect of their inclusion in the calculation. This analysis yields an estimate of the asymptotic behavior of the packing density in high dimensions. We argue that this estimate should be reinterpreted as a lower bound. The latter part of the paper is devoted to Bravais lattice packings that possess the minimum number of contacts to maintain mechanical stability. We show that quasicontacts play an even more important role in these packings. We also show that jammed lattices are a useful setting for studying the Edwards ensemble, which weights each mechanically stable configuration equally and does not account for dynamics. This ansatz fails to predict the power-law distribution of near-zero contact forces, P(f)∼f(θ).

Hydrodynamics of fluid-solid coexistence in dense shear granular flow

We consider dense rapid shear flow of inelastically colliding hard disks. Navier-Stokes granular hydrodynamics is applied accounting for the recent finding that shear viscosity diverges at a lower density than the rest of the constitutive relations. New interpolation formulas for constitutive relations between dilute and dense cases are proposed and justified in molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. A linear stability analysis of the uniform shear flow is performed and the full phase diagram is presented. It is shown that when the inelasticity of particle collision becomes large enough, the uniform sheared flow gives way to a two-phase flow, where a dense "solidlike" striped cluster is surrounded by two fluid layers. The results of the analysis are verified in event-driven MD simulations, and a good agreement is observed.
