Generic features of the wealth distribution in ideal-gas-like markets

Wealth distribution for agents with spending propensity, interacting over a network

Wealth distribution in an economic system is studied by means of an agent model, where agents have a certain spending propensity and they interact over a given network. When the network is random, or scale-free ( ∼k^-α) with α below 1, approximately, results are equivalent to having all agents allowed to interact with any other agent. However, values of α>1 affect both the wealth distribution and the behavior at the tail. These results hold both in the absence of spending propensity and when the spending propensity follows a power-law. Results suggest that Pareto's law is a very robust phenomenon with respect to the details of the connectivity of the agents and that the ubiquity of Pareto's law in actual systems may have implications on the topological properties of the underlying networks of interaction.

Analysis of Solidarity Effect for Entropy, Pareto, and Gini Indices on Two-Class Society Using Kinetic Wealth Exchange Model

It is well known that two different underlying dynamics lead to different patterns of income/wealth distribution such as the Boltzmann–Gibbs form for the lower end and the Pareto-like power-law form for the higher-end. The Boltzmann–Gibbs distribution is naturally derived from maximizing the entropy of random interactions among agents, whereas the Pareto distribution requires a rational approach of economics dependent on the wealth level. More interestingly, the Pareto regime is very dynamic, whereas the Boltzmann–Gibbs regime is stable over time. Also, there are some cases in which the distributions of income/wealth are bimodal or polymodal. In order to incorporate the dynamic aspects of the Pareto regime and the polymodal forms of income/wealth distribution into one stochastic model, we present a modified agent-based model based on classical kinetic wealth exchange models. First, we adopt a simple two-class society consisting of the rich and the poor where the agents in the same class engage in random exchanges while the agents in the different classes perform a wealth-dependent winner-takes-all trading. This modification leads the system to an extreme polarized society with preserving the Pareto exponent. Second, we incorporate a solidarity formation among agents belonging to the lower class in our model, in order to confront a super-rich agent. This modification leads the system to a drastic bimodal distribution of wealth with a varying Pareto exponent over varying the solidarity parameter, that is, the Pareto-regime becomes narrower and the Pareto exponent gets larger as the solidarity parameter increases. We argue that the solidarity formation is the key ingredient in the varying Pareto exponent and the polymodal distribution. Lastly, we take two approaches to evaluate the level of inequality of wealth such as Gini coefficients and the entropy measure. According to the numerical results, the increasing solidarity parameter leads to a decreasing Gini coefficient not linearly but nonlinearly, whereas the entropy measure is robust over varying solidarity parameters, implying that there is a trade-off between the intermediate party and the high end.

Poverty index with time-varying consumption and income distributions

Starting from a stochastic agent-based model to represent market exchange in a developing economy, we study time variations of the probability density function of income with simultaneous variation of the consumption deprivation (CD), where CD represents the shortfall in consumption from the saturation level of an essential commodity, cereal. Together, these two models combine income-expenditure-based market dynamics with time variations in consumption due to income. In this new unified theoretical structure, exchange of trade in assets is only allowed when the income exceeds consumption-deprivation while CD itself is endogenously obtained from a separate kinetic model. Our results reveal that the nature of time variation of the CD function leads to a downward trend in the threshold level of consumption of basic necessities, suggesting a possible dietary transition in terms of lower saturation level of food-grain consumption, possibly through an improvement in the level of living. The new poverty index, defined as CD, is amenable to approximate probabilistic prediction within a short time horizon. A major achievement of this work is the intrinsic independence of the poverty index from an exogenous poverty line, making it more objective for policy formulation as opposed to existing poverty indices in the literature.

Zipf's law in city size from a resource utilization model

We study a resource utilization scenario characterized by intrinsic fitness. To describe the growth and organization of different cities, we consider a model for resource utilization where many restaurants compete, as in a game, to attract customers using an iterative learning process. Results for the case of restaurants with uniform fitness are reported. When fitness is uniformly distributed, it gives rise to a Zipf law for the number of customers. We perform an exact calculation for the utilization fraction for the case when choices are made independent of fitness. A variant of the model is also introduced where the fitness can be treated as an ability to stay in the business. When a restaurant loses customers, its fitness is replaced by a random fitness. The steady state fitness distribution is characterized by a power law, while the distribution of the number of customers still follows the Zipf law, implying the robustness of the model. Our model serves as a paradigm for the emergence of Zipf law in city size distribution.

Gammalike mass distributions and mass fluctuations in conserved-mass transport processes

We show that, in conserved-mass transport processes, the steady-state distribution of mass in a subsystem is uniquely determined from the functional dependence of variance of the subsystem mass on its mean, provided that the joint mass distribution of subsystems is factorized in the thermodynamic limit. The factorization condition is not too restrictive as it would hold in systems with short-ranged spatial correlations. To demonstrate the result, we revisit a broad class of mass transport models and its generic variants, and show that the variance of the subsystem mass in these models is proportional to the square of its mean. This particular functional form of the variance constrains the subsystem mass distribution to be a gamma distribution irrespective of the dynamical rules.

Antipersistent dynamics in kinetic models of wealth exchange

We investigate the detailed dynamics of gains and losses made by agents in some kinetic models of wealth exchange. An earlier work suggested that a walk in an abstract gain-loss space can be conceived for the agents. For models in which agents do not save, or save with uniform saving propensity, the walk has diffusive behavior. For the case in which the saving propensity λ is distributed randomly (0≤λ<1), the resultant walk showed a ballistic nature (except at a particular value of λ*≈0.47). Here we consider several other features of the walk with random λ. While some macroscopic properties of this walk are comparable to a biased random walk, at microscopic level, there are gross differences. The difference turns out to be due to an antipersistent tendency toward making a gain (loss) immediately after making a loss (gain). This correlation is in fact present in kinetic models without saving or with uniform saving as well, such that the corresponding walks are not identical to ordinary random walks. In the distributed saving case, antipersistence occurs with a simultaneous overall bias.

Agent dynamics in kinetic models of wealth exchange

We study the dynamics of individual agents in some kinetic models of wealth exchange, particularly the models with savings. For the model with uniform savings, agents perform simple random walks in the "wealth space." On the other hand, we observe ballistic diffusion in the model with distributed savings. There is an associated skewness in the gain-loss distribution which explains the steady-state behavior in such models. We find that, in general, an agent gains while interacting with an agent with a larger saving propensity.

Weighted trade network in a model of preferential bipartite transactions

Using a model of wealth distribution where traders are characterized by quenched random saving propensities and trade among themselves by bipartite transactions, we mimic the enhanced rates of trading of the rich by introducing the preferential selection rule using a pair of continuously tunable parameters. The bipartite trading defines a growing trade network of traders linked by their mutual trade relationships. With the preferential selection rule this network appears to be highly heterogeneous characterized by the scale-free nodal degree and the link weight distributions and presents signatures of nontrivial strength-degree correlations. With detailed numerical simulations and using finite-size scaling analysis we present evidence that the associated critical exponents are continuous functions of the tuning parameters. However the wealth distribution has been observed to follow the well-known Pareto law robustly for all positive values of the tuning parameters.

Kinetic equations modelling wealth redistribution: a comparison of approaches

Kinetic equations modelling the redistribution of wealth in simple market economies is one of the major topics in the field of econophysics. We present a unifying approach to the qualitative study for a large variety of such models, which is based on a moment analysis in the related homogeneous Boltzmann equation, and on the use of suitable metrics for probability measures. In consequence, we are able to classify the most important feature of the steady wealth distribution, namely the fatness of the Pareto tail, and the dynamical stability of the latter in terms of the model parameters. Our results apply, e.g., to the market model with risky investments [S. Cordier, L. Pareschi, and G. Toscani, J. Stat. Phys. 120, 253 (2005)], and to the model with quenched saving propensities [A. Chatterjee, B. K. Chakrabarti, and S. S. Manna, Physica A 335, 155 (2004)]. Also, we present results from numerical experiments that confirm the theoretical predictions.

Quantitative description of realistic wealth distributions by kinetic trading models

Data on wealth distributions in trading markets show a power law behavior x(-)(1+alpha) at the high end, where, in general, alpha is greater than 1 (Pareto's law). Models based on kinetic theory, where a set of interacting agents trade money, yield power law tails if agents are assigned a saving propensity. In this paper we are solving the inverse problem, that is, in finding the saving propensity distribution which yields a given wealth distribution for all wealth ranges. This is done explicitly for two recently published and comprehensive wealth datasets.
