Computer simulations of glasses: the potential energy landscape

We review the current state of research on glasses, discussing the theoretical background and computational models employed to describe them. This article focuses on the use of the potential energy landscape (PEL) paradigm to account for the phenomenology of glassy systems, and the way in which it can be applied in simulations and the interpretation of their results. This article provides a broad overview of the rich phenomenology of glasses, followed by a summary of the theoretical frameworks developed to describe this phenomonology. We discuss the background of the PEL in detail, the onerous task of how to generate computer models of glasses, various methods of analysing numerical simulations, and the literature on the most commonly used model systems. Finally, we tackle the problem of how to distinguish a good glass former from a good crystal former from an analysis of the PEL. In summarising the state of the potential energy landscape picture, we develop the foundations for new theoretical methods that allow the ab initio prediction of the glass-forming ability of new materials by analysis of the PEL.

Potential energy landscape and inherent dynamics of a hard-sphere fluid

Hard-sphere models exhibit many of the same kinds of supercooled-liquid behavior as more realistic models of liquids, but the highly nonanalytic character of their potentials makes it a challenge to think of that behavior in potential energy landscape terms. We show here that it is possible to calculate an important topological property of hard-sphere landscapes, the geodesic pathways through those landscapes, and to do so without artificially coarse-graining or softening the potential. We show, moreover, that the rapid growth of the lengths of those pathways with increasing packing fraction quantitatively predicts the precipitous decline in diffusion constants in a glass-forming hard-sphere mixture model. The geodesic paths themselves can be considered as defining the intrinsic dynamics of hard spheres, so it is also revealing to find that they (and therefore the features of the underlying potential energy landscape) correctly predict the occurrence of dynamic heterogeneity and nonzero values of the non-Gaussian parameter. The success of these landscape predictions for the dynamics of such a singular model emphasizes that there is more to potential energy landscapes than is revealed by looking at the minima and saddle points.

Solidification in soft-core fluids: Disordered solids from fast solidification fronts

Using dynamical density functional theory we calculate the speed of solidification fronts advancing into a quenched two-dimensional model fluid of soft-core particles. We find that solidification fronts can advance via two different mechanisms, depending on the depth of the quench. For shallow quenches, the front propagation is via a nonlinear mechanism. For deep quenches, front propagation is governed by a linear mechanism and in this regime we are able to determine the front speed via a marginal stability analysis. We find that the density modulations generated behind the advancing front have a characteristic scale that differs from the wavelength of the density modulation in thermodynamic equilibrium, i.e., the spacing between the crystal planes in an equilibrium crystal. This leads to the subsequent development of disorder in the solids that are formed. In a one-component fluid, the particles are able to rearrange to form a well-ordered crystal, with few defects. However, solidification fronts in a binary mixture exhibiting crystalline phases with square and hexagonal ordering generate solids that are unable to rearrange after the passage of the solidification front and a significant amount of disorder remains in the system.

Free-energy landscape for cage breaking of three hard disks

We investigate cage breaking in dense hard-disk systems using a model of three Brownian disks confined within a circular corral. This system has a six-dimensional configuration space, but can be equivalently thought to explore a symmetric one-dimensional free-energy landscape containing two energy minima separated by an energy barrier. The exact free-energy landscape can be calculated as a function of system size by a direct enumeration of states. Results of simulations show the average time between cage breaking events follows an Arrhenius scaling when the energy barrier is large. We also discuss some of the consequences of using a one-dimensional representation to understand dynamics through a multidimensional space, such as diffusion acquiring spatial dependence and discontinuities in spatial derivatives of free energy.

Free-energy landscape for a tagged particle in a dense hard-sphere fluid

Exploiting the thermodynamic potential functional provided by density functional theory, we determine analytically the free-energy landscape (FEL) in a hard-sphere fluid. The FEL is represented in the three-dimensional coordinate space of the tagged particle. We also analyze the distribution of the free-energy barrier between adjacent basins and show that the most provable value and the average of the free-energy barrier are increasing functions of the density. Since the size of the cooperatively rearranging region (CRR) is also increased as the density is raised [Yoshidome, Phys. Rev. E 76, 021506 (2007)], the present result is consistent with the Adam-Gibbs theory in which the increase of the activation energy is due to the increase of the size of the CRR.

Exploring a free energy landscape by means of multidimensional infrared and terahertz spectroscopies

A model for the dipolar crystal system is employed to explore a role of free energy landscape (FEL), in which dipolar molecules are posted on two-dimensional lattice sites with two-state libratinal dynamics. All dipole-dipole interactions are included to have frustrated interactions among the dipoles. For the regular and distorted lattice cases, the FEL is calculated from the interaction energies and the total polarizations for all possible dipolar states at various temperatures. At high temperatures, the shape of the calculated FEL is smooth and parabolic, while it becomes bumpy at low temperatures exhibiting multiple local minima. To study dynamical aspects of the system, the single flip dynamics and the single-double mixed flips dynamics of dipoles are examined from a master equation approach. As the observables of linear absorption and two-dimensional (2D) infrared, far infrared, and terahertz spectroscopies, the first- and third-order response functions of polarization are calculated for different physical conditions characterized by the FEL. While the linear absorption signals decay in time in a similar manner regardless of the FEL profiles, the 2D signals exhibit prominent differences for those profiles. This indicates that we may differentiate the FEL profiles by changing two-time valuables in 2D spectroscopy. As illustrated in the single-double flips case, the FEL study by means of 2D spectroscopy, however, relies on the dynamics which is set independently from the FEL. The Smoluchowski equation is applied to examine the description of the collective dynamics on the microscopically calculated FEL. We found that the one-dimensional and 2D signals calculated from the Smoluchowski equation agree with those from master equation only at temperatures where the FEL becomes parabolic shape.
