Logical response induced by temperature asymmetry

It is known that the reliable logical response can be extracted from a noisy bistable system at an intermediate value of noise strength when two random or periodic, two-level, square waveform serve as the inputs. The asymmetry of the potential has a very important role and dictates the type of logical operation, such as or or and, exhibited by the system. Here we show that one can construct logic gates with symmetric bistable potential if the two states of the double-well are thermalized with two different heat baths. It has been found that if a given state is kept at a sufficiently low temperature compared to the other, the system shows one kind of logic behavior (say, or). Interestingly, the system's response turns into the other kind (say, and) if the temperature of the initial low-temperature well is increased gradually and the quality of the logical response first improves and then weakens after passing through a maximum at a particular value. However, the reliability of the second kind of logical response (and) is not as good as the first kind (or) and depends on the amplitude of the inputs. Still one can construct both kinds of logic gates with maximum reliability by properly choosing the initial low-temperature well.

Clustering versus non-clustering phase synchronizations

Clustering phase synchronization (CPS) is a common scenario to the global phase synchronization of coupled dynamical systems. In this work, a novel scenario, the non-clustering phase synchronization (NPS), is reported. It is found that coupled systems do not transit to the global synchronization until a certain sufficiently large coupling is attained, and there is no clustering prior to the global synchronization. To reveal the relationship between CPS and NPS, we further analyze the noise effect on coupled phase oscillators and find that the coupled oscillator system can change from CPS to NPS with the increase of noise intensity or system disorder. These findings are expected to shed light on the mechanism of various intriguing self-organized behaviors in coupled systems.

Signal transmission by vibrational resonance in one-way coupled bistable systems

Low-frequency signal transmission in one-way coupled bistable systems subject to a high-frequency force is studied. Two cases including the high-frequency force on all sites (case 1) and only on the first site (case 2) are considered. In these two cases, vibrational resonance induced by the high-frequency force can play an active role to effectively improve the signal transmission, and undamped signal transmission can be found in a broad parameter region. The combinative action of injected low-frequency signal, high-frequency driving, and coupling is of importance. Our findings suggest that high-frequency signal could be properly used in low-frequency signal transmission, and especially the implementation of high-frequency force simply on the first site for case 2 is meaningful for its simplicity and high efficiency.
