Shear-banding phenomena and dynamical behavior in a Laponite suspension

A model for aging under deformation field, residual stresses and strains in soft glassy materials

A model is proposed that considers aging and rejuvenation in a soft glassy material as, respectively, a decrease and an increase in free energy. The aging term is weighted by an inverse of characteristic relaxation time suggesting that greater mobility of the constituents induces faster aging in a material. A dependence of relaxation time on free energy is proposed, which under quiescent conditions leads to a power law dependence of relaxation time on waiting time as observed experimentally. The model considers two cases, namely, a constant modulus when aging is entropy controlled and a time dependent modulus. In the former and the latter cases the model has, respectively, two and three experimentally measurable parameters that are physically meaningful. Overall, the model predicts how the material undergoes aging and approaches a rejuvenated state under the application of a deformation field. In particular, the model proposes distinctions between various kinds of rheological effects for different combinations of parameters. Interestingly, when the relaxation time evolution is stronger than linear, the model predicts various features observed in soft glassy materials such as thixotropic and constant yield stress, thixotropic shear banding, and the presence of residual stress and strain.

Classical XY model with conserved angular momentum is an archetypal non-Newtonian fluid

We find that the classical one-dimensional XY model, with angular-momentum-conserving Langevin dynamics, mimics the non-Newtonian flow regimes characteristic of soft matter when subjected to counterrotating boundaries. An elaborate steady-state phase diagram has continuous and first-order transitions between states of uniform flow, shear-banding, solid-fluid coexistence and slip planes. Results of numerical studies and a concise mean-field constitutive relation offer a paradigm for diverse nonequilibrium complex fluids.

Measurement of the four-point susceptibility of an out-of-equilibrium colloidal solution of nanoparticles using time-resolved light scattering

The spatial fluctuations of the dynamics of a colloidal system composed of nanoparticles are probed by a novel experimental setup, which combines homodyne and heterodyne dynamic light scattering focused onto a micron-sized volume via a microscope objective. The technique is used to measure the four-point susceptibility of an aging colloidal suspension, revealing a breakdown of the Gaussian approximation for the correlation function of the scattered electromagnetic field. The deviation from the Gaussian approximation increases with waiting time as the system evolves toward an arrested phase, signaling the gradual emergence of higher-order nontrivial dynamic correlations.

Sol-gel transition in dispersions of layered double-hydroxide nanosheets

Surfactant-intercalated layered double-hydroxide solid Mg-Al LDH-dodecyl sulfate (DDS) undergoes rapid and facile delamination to its ultimate constituent, single sheets of nanometer thickness and micrometer size, in a nonpolar solvent such as toluene to form stable dispersions. The delaminated nanosheets are electrically neutral because the surfactant chains remain tethered to the inorganic layer even on exfoliation. With increasing volume fraction of the solid, the dispersion transforms from a free-flowing sol to a solidlike gel. Here we have investigated the sol-gel transition in dispersions of the hydrophobically modified Mg-Al LDH-DDS in toluene by rheology, SAXS, and (1)H NMR measurements. The rheo-SAXS measurements show that the sharp rise in the viscosity of the dispersion during gel formation is a consequence of a tactoidal microstructure formed by the stacking of the nanosheets with an intersheet separation of 3.92 nm. The origin and nature of the attractive forces that lead to the formation of the tactoidal structure were obtained from 1D and 2D (1)H NMR measurements that provided direct evidence of the association of the toluene solvent molecules with the terminal methyl of the tethered DDS surfactant chains. Gel formation is a consequence of the attractive dispersive interactions of toluene molecules with the tails of DDS chains anchored to opposing Mg-Al LDH sheets. The toluene solvent molecules function as molecular "glue" holding the nanosheets within the tactoidal microstructure together. Our study shows how rheology, SAXS, and NMR measurements complement each other to provide a molecular-level description of the sol-gel transition in dispersions of a hydrophobically modified layered double hydroxide.

Influence of boundary conditions on yielding in a soft glassy material

The yielding behavior of a sheared Laponite suspension is investigated within a 1 mm gap under two different boundary conditions. No-slip conditions, ensured by using rough walls, lead to shear localization as already reported in various soft glassy materials. When apparent wall slip is allowed using a smooth geometry, the sample breaks up into macroscopic solid pieces that get slowly eroded by the surrounding fluidized material up to the point where the whole sample is fluid. Such a drastic effect of boundary conditions on yielding suggests the existence of some macroscopic characteristic length that could be connected to cooperativity effects in jammed materials under shear.
