Control of spiking regularity in a noisy complex neural network

Propagation of Collective Temporal Regularity in Noisy Hierarchical Networks

Neuronal communication between different brain areas is achieved in terms of spikes. Consequently, spike-time regularity is closely related to many cognitive tasks and timing precision of neural information processing. A recent experiment on primate parietal cortex reports that spike-time regularity increases consistently from primary sensory to higher cortical regions. This observation conflicts with the influential view that spikes in the neocortex are fundamentally irregular. To uncover the underlying network mechanism, we construct a multilayered feedforward neural information transmission pathway and investigate how spike-time regularity evolves across subsequent layers. Numerical results reveal that despite the obviously irregular spiking patterns in previous several layers, neurons in downstream layers can generate rather regular spikes, which depends on the network topology. In particular, we find that collective temporal regularity in deeper layers exhibits resonance-like behavior with respect to both synaptic connection probability and synaptic weight, i.e., the optimal topology parameter maximizes the spike-timing regularity. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that synaptic properties, including inhibition, synaptic transient dynamics, and plasticity, have significant impacts on spike-timing regularity propagation. The emergence of the increasingly regular spiking (RS) patterns in higher parietal regions can, thus, be viewed as a natural consequence of spiking activity propagation between different brain areas. Finally, we validate an important function served by increased RS: promoting reliable propagation of spike-rate signals across downstream layers.

Enhanced corticomuscular coherence by external stochastic noise

Noise can have beneficial effects as shown by the stochastic resonance (SR) phenomenon which is characterized by performance improvement when an optimal noise is added. Modern attempts to improve human performance utilize this phenomenon. The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether performance improvement by addition of optimum noise (ON) is related to increased cortical motor spectral power (SP) and increased corticomuscular coherence. Eight subjects performed a visuomotor task requiring to compensate with the right index finger a static force (SF) generated by a manipulandum on which Gaussian noise was applied. The finger position was displayed on-line on a monitor as a small white dot which the subjects had to maintain in the center of a green bigger circle. Electroencephalogram from the contralateral motor area, electromyogram from active muscles and finger position were recorded. The performance was measured by the mean absolute deviation (MAD) of the white dot from the zero position. ON compared to the zero noise condition induced an improvement in motor accuracy together with an enhancement of cortical motor SP and corticomuscular coherence in beta-range. These data suggest that the improved sensorimotor performance via SR is consistent with an increase in the cortical motor SP and in the corticomuscular coherence.

Doubly stochastic coherence in complex neuronal networks

A system composed of coupled FitzHugh-Nagumo neurons with various topological structures is investigated under the co-presence of two independently additive and multiplicative Gaussian white noises, in which particular attention is paid to the neuronal networks spiking regularity. As the additive noise intensity and the multiplicative noise intensity are simultaneously adjusted to optimal values, the temporal periodicity of the output of the system reaches the maximum, indicating the occurrence of doubly stochastic coherence. The network topology randomness exerts different influences on the temporal coherence of the spiking oscillation for dissimilar coupling strength regimes. At a small coupling strength, the spiking regularity shows nearly no difference in the regular, small-world, and completely random networks. At an intermediate coupling strength, the temporal periodicity in a small-world neuronal network can be improved slightly by adding a small fraction of long-range connections. At a large coupling strength, the dynamical behavior of the neurons completely loses the resonance property with regard to the additive noise intensity or the multiplicative noise intensity, and the spiking regularity decreases considerably with the increase of the network topology randomness. The network topology randomness plays more of a depressed role than a favorable role in improving the temporal coherence of the spiking oscillation in the neuronal network research study.

Inhibition of rhythmic spiking by colored noise in neural systems

We study the effect of colored noise on the rhythmic spiking activity of neural systems in this paper. The phenomenon of the so-called inverse stochastic resonance , that is, noise with appropriate intensity suppresses the spiking activity in neural systems, is clearly observed in a special parameter regime. We find that the inhibition effect of colored noise is stronger than that of Gaussian white noise. Furthermore, our simulation results show that the inhibition effect of colored noise provides a useful mechanism for the generation of synchronized burst in type-2 mixed-feed-forward-feedback loop neuronal network motif, which indicates that such inhibition effect might have some biological implications.

Oscillation propagation in neural networks with different topologies

In light of the issue of oscillation propagation in neural networks, various topologies of FitzHugh-Nagumo neuron populations are investigated. External Gaussian white noise is injected into the first neuron only. Before the oscillation spreads to the other neurons in the network, some of the inherent stochasticity within the noise-induced oscillation of the first neuron is filtered out due to the neuron's nonlinear dynamics. Both the temporal and the spatial coherence of the evoked activity's propagation are analyzed in conjunction with the network topology randomness p, the coupling strength between neurons g, and the noise amplitude D. The temporal periodicity of the global neural network presents a typical coherence biresonance (CBR) characteristic with regard to the noise intensity. The network topology randomness exerts different influences on the resonance effects for different coupling strength regimes. At an intermediate coupling strength, the random shortcuts reinforce the interactions between the neurons, and then more stochasticity in the firings of the first neuron spreads within the network. Consequently, CBR is decreased with the increase of the network topology randomness. At a large coupling strength, the random shortcuts assist the nonlinearity in impairing the stochastic components, and consequently help to enhance the resonance effects, which differed significantly from previous related work. However, the degree of the spatial synchronization of the systems increases monotonically as the network topology randomness increases at any coupling strength.

Stochastic and coherence resonance in feed-forward-loop neuronal network motifs

The relationships between noise and complex dynamic behaviors of neuronal ensembles are key questions in computational neuroscience, particularly in understanding some basic signal transmission mechanisms of the brain. Here we systemically investigate both the stochastic resonance (SR) and coherence resonance (CR) in the triple-neuron feed-forward-loop (FFL) network motifs by computational modeling. We use the Izhikevich neuron model as well as the chemical coupling to build the FFL motifs, and consider all possible motif types. The simulation results demonstrate that these motifs can exploit noise to enrich its dynamic performance. With a proper choice of noise intensities, both the SR and CR can be exhibited in many types of the FFLs. On the other hand, our results also indicate that the coupling strength serves as a control parameter, which has great impacts on the stochastic dynamics of the FFL motifs. Additionally, biological implications of presented results in the field of neuroscience are outlined.
