Adsorption of fluids in a pore with chemical heterogeneities: the cooperative effect

Bulk supercooled water versus adsorbed films on silica surfaces: specific heat by Monte Carlo simulation

Between 150 and 230.6 K, bulk supercooled water freezes upon cooling, and amorphous ice crystallizes upon heating: bulk water thus exists only in its stable ice form. To circumvent this problem, experiments are generally performed on water adsorbed in SiO2 based porous systems. In this work, we take advantage of Monte Carlo simulations to explore this metastable supercooled region inaccessible to experiments. Using three rigid, non-polarizable water models, namely SPC, TIP4P and TIP4P/2005, we investigate the isobaric specific heat capacity (Cp), between 100 and 300 K, of bulk water and water films of few monolayers adsorbed on different SiO2 surfaces: a smooth surface, a non-hydroxylated (0001) surface of quartz, and a fully hydroxylated (001) surface of cristobalite. As Cp is directly related to the entropy fluctuations and we focus on low temperatures, the convergence of the Monte Carlo simulations is a critical point of this work. Also, due to the small mass of the hydrogen atoms, quantum corrections are taken into account, and lead to an excellent agreement of the simulated and experimental Cp values at low temperature (100 K region). Altogether, we conclude that, in bulk, Cp is shown to exhibit a broad peak around 225 K for the SPC and TIP4P models, and around 250 K for the TIP4P/2005 model, in qualitative agreement with the experimentally observed features in Cp measurements. For interfacial water, in all cases, the broad Cp peak disappears. This result, at odds with experimental observations, suggests that disorder and hydrogen bonding at the interface (not yet taken into account) have a fundamental role in confined water transitions.

Effect of disorder on condensation in the lattice gas model on a random graph

The lattice gas model of condensation in a heterogeneous pore system, represented by a random graph of cells, is studied using an exact analytical solution. A binary mixture of pore cells with different coordination numbers is shown to exhibit two phase transitions as a function of chemical potential in a certain temperature range. Heterogeneity in interaction strengths is demonstrated to reduce the critical temperature and, for large-enough degreeS of disorder, divides the cells into ones which are either on average occupied or unoccupied. Despite treating the pore space loops in a simplified manner, the random-graph model provides a good description of condensation in porous structures containing loops. This is illustrated by considering capillary condensation in a structural model of mesoporous silica SBA-15.

Capillary condensation in one-dimensional irregular confinement

A lattice-gas model with heterogeneity is developed for the description of fluid condensation in finite sized one-dimensional pores of arbitrary shape. Mapping to the random-field Ising model allows an exact solution of the model to be obtained at zero-temperature, reproducing the experimentally observed dependence of the amount of fluid adsorbed in the pore on external pressure. It is demonstrated that the disorder controls the sorption for long pores and can result in H2-type hysteresis. Finite-temperature Metropolis dynamics simulations support analytical findings in the limit of low temperatures. The proposed framework is viewed as a fundamental building block of the theory of capillary condensation necessary for reliable structural analysis of complex porous media from adsorption-desorption data.

A Monte Carlo study of crowding effects on the self-assembly of amphiphilic molecules

In this work, lattice Monte Carlo was used to study the effects of crowding on the self-assembly of surfactants. Simulation results show that crowding strongly shifts the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of surfactants from the bulk value. Two effects originated from crowding are found to govern the CMC shift: one is the depletion effect by crowding agents and the other is the available volume for micelle formation. The depletion effects inevitably result in the enrichment of surfactants in crowding-free regions and cause the decrease in CMC. On the other hand, the appearance of crowding agents decreases the available volume for micelle formation, which reduces the conformational entropy and impedes the micelle formation. Three factors, including the radius of crowding agents, the arrangement of crowding agents, and the volume fraction of crowding agents, are considered in this work to study the crowding effects. The trends of CMC shifts are interpreted from the competition between the depletion effects and the available volume for micelle formation.

Nucleation and hysteresis of vapor-liquid phase transitions in confined spaces: effects of fluid-wall interaction

In this work, we propose a method to stabilize a nucleus in the framework of lattice density-functional theory (LDFT) by imposing a suitable constraint. Using this method, the shape of critical nucleus and height of the nucleation barrier can be determined without using a predefined nucleus as input. As an application of this method, we study the nucleation behavior of vapor-liquid transition in nanosquare pores with infinite length and relate the observed hysteresis loop on an adsorption isotherm to the nucleation mechanism. According to the dependence of hysteresis and the nucleation mechanism on the fluid-wall interaction, w , in this work, we have classified w into three regions ( w>0.9 , 0.1< or =w< or =0.9 , and w<0.1 ), which are denoted as strongly, moderately, and weakly attractive fluid-wall interaction, respectively. The dependence of hysteresis on the fluid-wall interaction is interpreted by the different nucleation mechanisms. Our constrained LDFT calculations also show that the different transition paths may induce different nucleation behaviors. The transition path dependence should be considered if morphological transition of nuclei exists during a nucleation process.
