Direct evidence for conformal invariance of avalanche frontiers in sandpile models

Conformal Invariance in Water-Wave Turbulence

We experimentally investigate the statistics of zero-height isolines in gravity wave turbulence as physical candidates for conformal invariant curves. We present direct evidence that they can be described by the family of conformal invariant curves called stochastic Schramm-Löwner evolution (or SLE_{κ}), with diffusivity κ=2.88(8). A higher nonlinearity in the height fields is shown destroy this symmetry, though scale invariance is retained.

Sandpiles subjected to sinusoidal drive

This paper considers a sandpile model subjected to a sinusoidal external drive with the period T. We develop a theoretical model for the Green's function in a large T limit, which predicts that the avalanches are anisotropic and elongated in the oscillation direction. We track the problem numerically and show that the system additionally shows a regime where the avalanches are elongated in the perpendicular direction with respect to the oscillations. We find a crossover between these two regimes. The power spectrum of avalanche size and the grains wasted from the parallel and perpendicular directions are studied. These functions show power-law behavior in terms of the frequency with exponents, which run with T.

Self-repelling bipedal exploration process

A self-repelling two-leg (biped) spider walk is considered where the local stochastic movements are governed by two independent control parameters β_{d} and β_{h}, so that the former controls the distance (d) between the legs positions, and the latter controls the statistics of self-crossing of the traversed paths. The probability measure for local movements is supposed to be the one for the "true self-avoiding walk" multiplied by a factor exponentially decaying with d. After a transient behavior for short times, a variety of behaviors have been observed for large times depending on the value of β_{d} and β_{h}. Our statistical analysis reveals that the system undergoes a crossover between two (small and large β_{d}) regimes identified in large times (t). In the small β_{d} regime, the random walkers (identified by the position of the legs of the spider) remain on average in a fixed nonzero distance in the large time limit, whereas in the second regime (large β_{d}), the absorbing force between the walkers dominates the other stochastic forces. In the latter regime, d decays in a power-law fashion with the logarithm of time. When the system is mapped to a growth process (represented by a height field which is identified by the number of visits for each point), the roughness and the average height show different behaviors in two regimes, i.e., they show a power law with respect to t in the first regime and logt in the second regime. The fractal dimension of the random walker traces and the winding angle are shown to consistently undergo a similar crossover.

Statistical investigation of avalanches of three-dimensional small-world networks and their boundary and bulk cross-sections

In many situations we are interested in the propagation of energy in some portions of a three-dimensional system with dilute long-range links. In this paper, a sandpile model is defined on the three-dimensional small-world network with real dissipative boundaries and the energy propagation is studied in three dimensions as well as the two-dimensional cross-sections. Two types of cross-sections are defined in the system, one in the bulk and another in the system boundary. The motivation of this is to make clear how the statistics of the avalanches in the bulk cross-section tend to the statistics of the dissipative avalanches, defined in the boundaries as the concentration of long-range links (α) increases. This trend is numerically shown to be a power law in a manner described in the paper. Two regimes of α are considered in this work. For sufficiently small αs the dominant behavior of the system is just like that of the regular BTW, whereas for the intermediate values the behavior is nontrivial with some exponents that are reported in the paper. It is shown that the spatial extent up to which the statistics is similar to the regular BTW model scales with α just like the dissipative BTW model with the dissipation factor (mass in the corresponding ghost model) m^{2}∼α for the three-dimensional system as well as its two-dimensional cross-sections.

Statistical investigation of the cross sections of wave clusters in the three-dimensional Bak-Tang-Wiesenfeld model

We consider the three-dimensional (3D) Bak-Tang-Wiesenfeld model in a cubic lattice. Along with analyzing the 3D problem, the geometrical structure of the two-dimensional (2D) cross section of waves is investigated. By analyzing the statistical observables defined in the cross sections, it is shown that the model in that plane (named as 2D-induced model) is in the critical state and fulfills the finite-size scaling hypothesis. The analysis of the critical loops that are interfaces of the 2D-induced model is of special importance in this paper. Most importantly, we see that their fractal dimension is D(f)=1.387±0.005, which is compatible with the fractal dimension of the external perimeter of geometrical spin clusters of 2D critical Ising model. Some hyperscaling relations between the exponents of the model are proposed and numerically confirmed. We then address the problem of conformal invariance of the mentioned domain walls using Schramm-Lowener evolution (SLE). We found that they are described by SLE with the diffusivity parameter κ=2.8±0.2, nearly consistent with observed fractal dimension.

Left passage probability of Schramm-Loewner Evolution

SLE(κ,ρ[over arrow]) is a variant of Schramm-Loewner Evolution (SLE) which describes the curves which are not conformal invariant, but are self-similar due to the presence of some other preferred points on the boundary. In this paper we study the left passage probability (LPP) of SLE(κ,ρ[over arrow]) through field theoretical framework and find the differential equation governing this probability. This equation is numerically solved for the special case κ=2 and h(ρ)=0 in which h(ρ) is the conformal weight of the boundary changing (bcc) operator. It may be referred to loop erased random walk (LERW) and Abelian sandpile model (ASM) with a sink on its boundary. For the curve which starts from ξ(0) and conditioned by a change of boundary conditions at x(0), we find that this probability depends significantly on the factor x(0)-ξ(0). We also present the perturbative general solution for large x(0). As a prototype, we apply this formalism to SLE(κ,κ-6) which governs the curves that start from and end on the real axis.

Avalanche frontiers in the dissipative Abelian sandpile model and off-critical Schramm-Loewner evolution

Avalanche frontiers in Abelian sandpile model (ASM) are random simple curves whose continuum limit is known to be a Schramm-Loewner evolution with diffusivity parameter κ=2. In this paper we consider the dissipative ASM and study the statistics of the avalanche and wave frontiers for various rates of dissipation. We examine the scaling behavior of a number of functions, such as the correlation length, the exponent of distribution function of loop lengths, and the gyration radius defined for waves and avalanches. We find that they do scale with the rate of dissipation. Two significant length scales are observed. For length scales much smaller than the correlation length, these curves show properties close to the critical curves, and the corresponding diffusivity parameter is nearly the same as the critical limit. We interpret this as the ultraviolet limit where κ=2 corresponding to c=-2. For length scales much larger than the correlation length, we find that the avalanche frontiers tend to self-avoiding walk, and the corresponding driving function is proportional to the Brownian motion with the diffusivity parameter κ=8/3 corresponding to a field theory with c=0. We interpret this to be the infrared limit of the theory or at least a crossover.
