Methods for Line Shapes in Plasmas in the Presence of External Electric Fields

Line broadening is usually dominated by interactions of an atomic system with a stochastic, random medium. When, in addition to the random medium, a non-random field (such as a laser) is applied, the line profile may be modified in significant ways. The present work discusses these modifications and the methods to deal with them.

Nonequilibrium phase transition in a periodically driven XY spin chain

We present a general formulation of Floquet states of periodically time-dependent open Markovian quasifree fermionic many-body systems in terms of a discrete Lyapunov equation. Illustrating the technique, we analyze periodically kicked XY spin-½ chain which is coupled to a pair of Lindblad reservoirs at its ends. A complex phase diagram is reported with reentrant phases of long range and exponentially decaying spin-spin correlations as some of the system's parameters are varied. The structure of phase diagram is reproduced in terms of counting nontrivial stationary points of Floquet quasiparticle dispersion relation.

Frequency-fluctuation model applied to Stark-Zeeman spectral line shapes in plasmas

A very fast method for calculating line shapes in the presence of an external magnetic field accounting for charge particle dynamics is proposed. It is based on a reformulation of the frequency fluctuation model, which provides an expression of the dynamic line shape as a functional of the static distribution function of frequencies. In the presence of an external magnetic field, the distribution of intensity and polarization of the emission depends on the angle between the observation line and the magnetic field's direction. Comparisons with numerical simulations and experimental results for various plasma conditions show very good agreement. Results on hydrogen lines in the context of magnetic fusion and the Lyman-α line, accounting for fine structure, emitted by argon in the context of inertial fusion, are also presented.
