Interplay between coherent and incoherent decay processes in chaotic systems: The role of quantum interference

The population decay due to a small opening in an otherwise closed cavity supporting chaotic classical dynamics displays a quantum correction on top of the classical exponential form, a pure manifestation of quantum coherence that acquires a universal form and can be explained by path interference. Being coherent, such enhancement is prone to decoherence effects due to the coupling of the system to an external environment. We study this interplay between incoherent and coherent quantum corrections to decay by evaluating, within a Caldeira-Leggett scenario, off-diagonal contributions to the decoherence functional coming from pairs of correlated classical paths in the time regime where dissipative effects are neglected and decoherence does not affect the classical dynamics, but quantum interference must be accounted for. We find that the competing effects of interference and decoherence lead to a universal nonmonotonic form for the survival probability depending only on the coupling strength and macroscopic parameters of the cavity.

Exact fidelity and full fidelity statistics in regular and chaotic surroundings

For a prepared state exact expressions for the time-dependent mean fidelity as well as for the mean inverse participation ratio are obtained analytically. The prepared state is taken as an eigenstate of the unperturbed system, and the studied fidelity is identical to the survival probability. The full distribution functions of fidelity in the long-time limit and of inverse participation ratio are studied numerically and analytically. Surprising features such as fidelity revival and nonergodicity are observed. The roles of the coupling coefficients and of complexity of background are studied as well.

Quantum corrections to fidelity decay in chaotic systems

By considering correlations between classical orbits we derive semiclassical expressions for the decay of the quantum fidelity amplitude for classically chaotic quantum systems, as well as for its squared modulus, the fidelity or Loschmidt echo. Our semiclassical results for the fidelity amplitude agree with random matrix theory (RMT) and supersymmetry predictions in the universal Fermi-golden rule regime. The calculated quantum corrections can be viewed as arising from a static random perturbation acting on nearly self-retracing interfering paths, and hence will be suppressed for time-varying perturbations. Moreover, using trajectory-based methods we show a relation, recently obtained in RMT, between the fidelity amplitude and the cross-form factor for parametric level correlations. Beyond RMT, we compute Ehrenfest-time effects on the fidelity amplitude. Furthermore our semiclassical approach allows for a unified treatment of the fidelity, both in the Fermi-golden rule and Lyapunov regimes, demonstrating that quantum corrections are suppressed in the latter.
