Hyperspectral Imaging of Photonic Cellulose Nanocrystal Films: Structure of Local Defects and Implications for Self-Assembly Pathways

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) can spontaneously assemble into chiral nematic films capable of reflecting circularly polarized light in the visible range. As many other photonic materials obtained by bottom-up approaches, CNC films often display defects that greatly impact their visual appearance. Here, we study the optical response of defects in photonic CNC films, coupling optical microscopy with hyperspectral imaging, and we compare it to optical simulations of discontinuous cholesteric structures of increasing complexity. Cross-sectional SEM observations of the film structure guided the choice of simulation parameters and showed excellent agreement with experimental optical patterns. More importantly, it strongly suggests that the last fraction of CNCs to self-assemble, upon solvent evaporation, does not undergo the typical nucleation and growth pathway, but a spinodal decomposition, an alternative self-assembly pathway so far overlooked in cast films and that can have far-reaching consequences on choices of CNC sources and assembly conditions.

Dynamics of liquid-liquid phase separation of wheat gliadins

During wheat seeds development, storage proteins are synthetized and subsequently form dense protein phases, also called Protein Bodies (PBs). The mechanisms of PBs formation and the supramolecular assembly of storage proteins in PBs remain unclear. In particular, there is an apparent contradiction between the low solubility in water of storage proteins and their high local dynamics in dense PBs. Here, we probe the interplay between short-range attraction and long-range repulsion of a wheat gliadin isolate by investigating the dynamics of liquid-liquid phase separation after temperature quench. We do so using time-resolved small angle light scattering, phase contrast microscopy and rheology. We show that gliadins undergo liquid-liquid phase separation through Nucleation and Growth or Spinodal Decomposition depending on the quench depth. They assemble into dense phases but remain in a liquid-like state over an extended range of temperatures and concentrations. The analysis of phase separation kinetics reveals that the attraction strength of gliadins is in the same order of magnitude as other proteins. We discuss the respective role of competing interactions, protein intrinsic disorder, hydration and polydispersity in promoting local dynamics and providing this liquid-like behavior despite attractive forces.

Gelation and mechanical response of patchy rods

We perform Brownian dynamics simulations to study the gelation of suspensions of attractive, rod-like particles. We show that in detail the rod-rod surface interactions can dramatically affect the dynamics of gelation and the structure and mechanics of the networks that form. If the attraction between the rods is perfectly smooth along their length, they will collapse into compact bundles. If the attraction is sufficiently corrugated or patchy, over time, a rigid space-spanning network will form. We study the structure and mechanical properties of the networks that form as a function of the fraction of the surface, f, that is allowed to bind. Surprisingly, the structural and mechanical properties are non-monotonic in f. At low f, there are not a sufficient number of cross-linking sites to form networks. At high f, rods bundle and form disconnected clusters. At intermediate f, robust networks form. The elastic modulus and yield stress are both non-monotonic in the surface coverage. The stiffest and strongest networks show an essentially homogeneous deformation under strain with rods re-orienting along the extensional axis. Weaker, more clumpy networks at high f re-orient relatively little with strong non-affine deformation. These results suggest design strategies for tailoring surface interactions between rods to yield rigid networks with optimal mechanical properties.

A theoretical investigation on the honeycomb potential fluid

A local self-consistent Ornstein-Zernike (OZ) integral equation theory (IET) is proposed to provide a rapid route for obtaining thermodynamic and structural information for any thermodynamically stable or metastable state points in the bulk phase diagram without recourse to traditional thermodynamic integration, and extensive NVT-Monte Carlo simulations are performed on a recently proposed honeycomb potential in three dimensions to test the theory's reliability. The simulated quantities include radial distribution function (rdf) and excess internal energy, pressure, excess chemical potential, and excess Helmholtz free energy. It is demonstrated that (i) the theory reproduces the rdf very satisfactorily only if the bulk state does not enter deep into a two phases coexistence region; (ii) the excess internal energy is the only one of the four thermodynamic quantities investigated amenable to the most accurate prediction by the present theory, and the simulated pressure is somewhat overestimated by the theoretical calculations, but the deviation tends to vanish along with rising of the temperature; (iii) using the structural functions from the present local self-consistent OZ IET, a previously derived local expression, due to the present author, achieves even a higher accuracy in calculating for the excess chemical potential than the exact virial pressure formula for the pressure, and the resulting excess Helmholtz free energy is in surprisingly same with the simulation results due to offset of the errors. Based on the above observations, it is suggested that it may be a good procedure to integrate the theoretical excess internal energy along the isochors to get the excess Helmholtz free energy, which is then fitted to a polynomial to be used for calculation of all of other thermodynamic quantities in the framework of the OZ IET.
