Dynamics of non-Markovian systems: Markovian embedding versus effective mass approach

Dynamics of non-Markovian systems is a classic problem yet it attracts everlasting activity in physics and beyond. A powerful tool for modeling such setups is the generalized Langevin equation, however, its analysis typically poses a major challenge even for numerical means. For this reason, various approximations have been proposed over the years that simplify the original model. In this paper, we compare two methods allowing us to tackle this great challenge: (i) the well-known and successful Markovian embedding technique and (ii) the recently developed effective mass approach. We discuss their scope of applicability, numerical accuracy, and computational efficiency. In doing so, we consider a paradigmatic model of a free Brownian particle subjected to power-law correlated thermal noise. We show that when the memory time is short, the effective mass approach offers satisfying precision and typically is much faster than the Markovian embedding. Moreover, the concept of effective mass can be used to find optimal parameters allowing us to reach supreme accuracy and minimal computational cost within the embedding. Our paper therefore provides a blueprint for investigating the dynamics of non-Markovian systems.

Functional significance of complex fluctuations in brain activity: from resting state to cognitive neuroscience

Behavioral studies have shown that human cognition is characterized by properties such as temporal scale invariance, heavy-tailed non-Gaussian distributions, and long-range correlations at long time scales, suggesting models of how (non observable) components of cognition interact. On the other hand, results from functional neuroimaging studies show that complex scaling and intermittency may be generic spatio-temporal properties of the brain at rest. Somehow surprisingly, though, hardly ever have the neural correlates of cognition been studied at time scales comparable to those at which cognition shows scaling properties. Here, we analyze the meanings of scaling properties and the significance of their task-related modulations for cognitive neuroscience. It is proposed that cognitive processes can be framed in terms of complex generic properties of brain activity at rest and, ultimately, of functional equations, limiting distributions, symmetries, and possibly universality classes characterizing them.

Multiple current reversals and diffusion enhancement in a symmetrical periodic potential

Transport and diffusion of Brownian particles in a symmetrical periodic potential were investigated for both overdamped and underdamped cases, where the ratchet potential is driven by an external unbiased time periodic force and correlation between thermal and potential fluctuations. It is shown that the correlation between two noises breaks the symmetry of the potential to generate motion of the Brownian particles in particular direction, and the current can reverse its direction by changing the sign of the noise correlation. For the overdamped case, the systemic parameters only induce the directed current, and the noise correlation suppresses the diffusion of the overdamped Brownian particles. However for the underdamped case, the current reverses its direction multiple times with increasing the systemic parameters, i.e., the multiple current reversal is observed, and the noise negative correlation suppresses the diffusion of the underdamped Brownian particles, while the noise positive correlation enhances it.

Two coupled Josephson junctions: dc voltage controlled by biharmonic current

We study transport properties of two Josephson junctions coupled by an external shunt resistance. One of the junctions (say, the first) is driven by an unbiased ac current consisting of two harmonics. The device can rectify the ac current yielding a dc voltage across the first junction. For some values of coupling strength, controlled by an external shunt resistance, a dc voltage across the second junction can be generated. By variation of system parameters such as the relative phase or frequency of two harmonics, one can conveniently manipulate both voltages with high efficiency, e.g. changing the dc voltages across the first and second junctions from positive to negative values and vice versa.

Positive and negative drag, dynamic phases, and commensurability in coupled one-dimensional channels of particles with Yukawa interactions

We introduce a simple model consisting of two or three coupled one-dimensional channels of particles with Yukawa interactions. For the two-channel system, when an external drive is applied only to the top or primary channel, we find a transition from locked flow, where particles in both channels move together, to decoupled flow, where the particles in the secondary or undriven channel move at a slower velocity than the particles in the primary or driven channel. Pronounced commensurability effects in the decoupling transition occur when the ratio of the number of particles in the top and bottom channels is varied, and the coupling of the two channels is enhanced when this ratio is an integer or a rational fraction. Near the commensurate fillings, we find additional features in the velocity-force curves caused by the slipping of individual vacancies or incommensurations in the secondary channels. For three coupled channels, when only the top channel is driven we find a remarkably rich variety of distinct dynamic phases, including multiple decoupling and recoupling transitions. These transitions produce pronounced signatures in the velocity response of each channel. We also find regimes where a negative drag effect can be induced in one of the nondriven channels. The particles in this channel move in the opposite direction from the particles in the driven channel due to the mixing of the two different periodic frequencies produced by the discrete motion of the particles in the two other channels. In the two-channel system, we also demonstrate a ratchet effect for the particles in the secondary channel when an asymmetric drive is applied to the primary channel. This ratchet effect is similar to that observed in superconducting vortex systems when there is a coupling between two different species of vortices.
