Hydrodynamic approximations for driven dense colloidal mixtures in narrow pores

The system of driven dense colloid mixtures is studied in one-, two-, and three-dimensional geometries. We calculate the diffusion coefficients and mobilities for each particle type, including cross-terms, in a hydrodynamic limit, using a mean-field-type approximation. The set of nonlinear diffusion equations are then solved. In one dimension, analytical results are possible. We show that in mixtures, the "Brazil nut" phenomenon, or depletion of larger particles by force of smaller ones, appears quite generically. We calculate the ratchet current and quantify the capability of sorting particles according to their size. We also indicate that the "Brazil nut" effect lies behind the possibility of perfect separation, where large and big particles travel in strictly opposite direction.

Short-range and long-range correlations in driven dense colloidal mixtures in narrow pores

The system of a driven dense colloid mixture in a tube with diameter comparable to particle size is modeled by a generalization of the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) model. The generalization goes in two directions: relaxing the exclusion constraint by allowing several (but few) particles on a site and by considering two species of particles, which differ in size and transport coefficients. We calculate the nearest-neighbor correlations using a variant of the Kirkwood approximation and show by comparison with numerical simulations that the approximation provides quite accurate results. However, for long-range correlations, we show that the Kirkwood approximation is useless, as it predicts exponential decay of the density-density correlation function with distance, while simulation data indicate that the decay is algebraic. For the one-component system, we show that the decay is governed by a power law with universal exponent close to 2. In the two-component system, the correlation function behaves in a more complicated manner: Its sign oscillates but the envelope decays again very slowly and the decay is compatible with a power law with an exponent somewhat lower than 2. Therefore, our generalization of the ASEP belongs to a different universality class from the ensemble of generalized ASEP models which are mappable to zero-range processes.

Phase separation transition in a nonconserved two-species model

A one-dimensional stochastic exclusion process with two species of particles, + and -, is studied where density of each species can fluctuate but the total particle density is conserved. From the exact stationary state weights we show that, in the limiting case where density of negative particles vanishes, the system undergoes a phase separation transition where a macroscopic domain of vacancies form in front of a single surviving negative particle. We also show that the phase-separated state is associated with a diverging correlation length for any density and that the critical exponents characterizing the behavior in this region are different from those at the transition line. The static and the dynamical critical exponents are obtained from the exact solution and numerical simulations, respectively.

Phase coexistence and spatial correlations in reconstituting k-mer models

In reconstituting k-mer models, extended objects that occupy several sites on a one-dimensional lattice undergo directed or undirected diffusion, and reconstitute-when in contact-by transferring a single monomer unit from one k-mer to the other; the rates depend on the size of participating k-mers. This polydispersed system has two conserved quantities, the number of k-mers and the packing fraction. We provide a matrix product method to write the steady state of this model and to calculate the spatial correlation functions analytically. We show that for a constant reconstitution rate, the spatial correlation exhibits damped oscillations in some density regions separated, from other regions with exponential decay, by a disorder surface. In a specific limit, this constant-rate reconstitution model is equivalent to a single dimer model and exhibits a phase coexistence similar to the one observed earlier in totally asymmetric simple exclusion process on a ring with a defect.

Comment on "Generalized exclusion processes: Transport coefficients"

In a recent paper, Arita et al. [Phys. Rev. E 90, 052108 (2014)PLEEE81539-375510.1103/PhysRevE.90.052108] consider the transport properties of a class of generalized exclusion processes. Analytical expressions for the transport-diffusion coefficient are derived by ignoring correlations. It is claimed that these expressions become exact in the hydrodynamic limit. In this Comment, we point out that (i) the influence of correlations upon the diffusion does not vanish in the hydrodynamic limit, and (ii) the expressions for the self- and transport diffusion derived by Arita et al. are special cases of results derived in Becker et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 110601 (2013)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.111.110601].

Generalized exclusion processes: Transport coefficients

A class of generalized exclusion processes with symmetric nearest-neighbor hopping which are parametrized by the maximal occupancy, k≥1, is investigated. For these processes on hypercubic lattices we compute the diffusion coefficient in all spatial dimensions. In the extreme cases of k=1 (symmetric simple exclusion process) and k=∞ (noninteracting symmetric random walks) the diffusion coefficient is constant, while for 2≤k<∞ it depends on the density and k. We also study the evolution of the tagged particle, show that it exhibits a normal diffusive behavior in all dimensions, and probe numerically the coefficient of self-diffusion.

Transport dynamics of molecular motors that switch between an active and inactive state

Molecular motors are involved in key transport processes in the cell. Many of these motors can switch from an active to a nonactive state, either spontaneously or depending on their interaction with other molecules. When active, the motors move processively along the filaments, while when inactive they are stationary. We treat here the simple case of spontaneously switching motors, between the active and inactive states, along an open linear track. We use our recent analogy with vehicular traffic, where we go beyond the mean-field description. We map the phase diagram of this system, and find that it clearly breaks the symmetry between the different phases, as compared to the standard total asymmetric exclusion process. We make several predictions that may be testable using molecular motors in vitro and in living cells.

Phase transition in an exactly solvable reaction-diffusion process

We study a nonconserved one-dimensional stochastic process which involves two species of particles A and B. The particles diffuse asymmetrically and react in pairs as A∅↔AA↔BA↔A∅ and B∅↔BB↔AB↔B∅. We show that the stationary state of the model can be calculated exactly by using matrix product techniques. The model exhibits a phase transition at a particular point in the phase diagram which can be related to a condensation transition in a particular zero-range process. We determine the corresponding critical exponents and provide a heuristic explanation for the unusually strong corrections to scaling seen in the vicinity of the critical point.

Multispecies model with interconversion, chipping, and injection

Motivated by the phenomenology of transport through the Golgi apparatus of cells, we study a multispecies model with boundary injection of one species of particle, interconversion between the different species of particle, and driven diffusive movement of particles through the system by chipping of a single particle from a site. The model is analyzed in one dimension using equations for particle currents. It is found that, depending on the rates of various processes and the asymmetry in the hopping, the system may exist either in a steady phase, in which the average mass at each site attains a time-independent value, or in a "growing" phase, in which the total mass grows indefinitely in time, even in a finite system. The growing phases have interesting spatial structure. In particular, we find phases in which some spatial regions of the system have a constant average mass, while other regions show unbounded growth.
