Role of delay for the symmetry in the dynamics of networks

Delays induced cluster synchronization in chaotic networks

We study networks of coupled oscillators and analyze the role of coupling delays in determining the emergence of cluster synchronization. Given a network topology and a particular arrangement of the coupling delays over the network connections, different patterns of cluster synchronization may emerge. We focus on a simple ring network of six bidirectionally coupled identical oscillators, for which with two different values of the delays, a total of eight cluster synchronization patterns may emerge, depending on the assignment of the delays to the ring connections. We analyze stability of each of the patterns and find that for large enough coupling strength and specific values of the delays, they can all be stabilized. We construct an experimental ring of six bidirectionally coupled Colpitts oscillators, with delayed connections obtained by coupling the oscillators via RF cables of appropriate length. We find that experimental observations of cluster synchronization are in essential agreement with theoretical predictions. We also verify our theory in a fully connected network of fifty nodes for which connections are randomly assigned to be either undelayed or delayed with a given probability.

Apparent remote synchronization of amplitudes: A demodulation and interference effect

A form of "remote synchronization" was recently described, wherein amplitude fluctuations across a ring of non-identical, non-linear electronic oscillators become entrained into spatially-structured patterns. According to linear models and mutual information, synchronization and causality dip at a certain distance, then recover before eventually fading. Here, the underlying mechanism is finally elucidated through novel experiments and simulations. The system non-linearity is found to have a dual role: it supports chaotic dynamics, and it enables the energy exchange between the lower and higher sidebands of a predominant frequency. This frequency acts as carrier signal in an arrangement resembling standard amplitude modulation, wherein the lower sideband and the demodulated baseband signals spectrally overlap. Due to a spatially-dependent phase relationship, at a certain distance near-complete destructive interference occurs between them, causing the observed dip. Methods suitable for detecting non-trivial entrainment, such as transfer entropy and the auxiliary system approach, nevertheless, reveal that synchronization and causality actually decrease with distance monotonically. Remoteness is, therefore, arguably only apparent, as also reflected in the propagation of external perturbations. These results demonstrate a complex mechanism of dynamical interdependence, and exemplify how it can lead to incorrectly inferring synchronization and causality.

Feedback as a mechanism for the resurrection of oscillations from death states

The quenching of oscillations in interacting systems leads to several unwanted situations, which necessitate a suitable remedy to overcome the quenching. In this connection, this work addresses a mechanism that can resurrect oscillations in a typical situation. Through both numerical and analytical studies, we show that the candidate which is capable of resurrecting oscillations is nothing but the feedback, the one which is profoundly used in dynamical control and in biotherapies. Even in the case of a rather general system, we demonstrate analytically the applicability of the technique over one of the oscillation quenched states called amplitude death states. We also discuss some of the features of this mechanism such as adaptability of the technique with the feedback of only a few of the oscillators.

Inphase and antiphase synchronization in a delay-coupled system with applications to a delay-coupled FitzHugh-Nagumo system

A time delay is inevitable in the coupled system and is an essential property of the coupling, which cannot be neglected in many realistic coupled systems. In this paper, we first study the existence of a Hopf bifurcation induced by coupling time delay and then investigate the influence of coupling time delay on the patterns of Hopf-bifurcating periodic oscillations. How the coupling time delay leads to complex scenarios of synchronized inphase or antiphase oscillations is analytically investigated. As an example, we study the delay-coupled FitzHugh-Nagumo system. We find conditional stability, absolute stability, and stability switches of the steady state provoked by the coupling time delay. Then we investigate the inphase and antiphase synchronized periodic solutions induced by delay, and determine the direction and stability of these bifurcating periodic orbits by employing the center manifold reduction and normal form theory. We find that in the region where stability switches occur, there exist synchronization transitions, i.e., synchronized dynamics can be switched from inphase (antiphase) to antiphase (inphase) and back to inphase (antiphase) and so on just by progressive increase of the coupling time delay.

Complex synchronous behavior in interneuronal networks with delayed inhibitory and fast electrical synapses

Networks of fast-spiking interneurons are crucial for the generation of neural oscillations in the brain. Here we study the synchronous behavior of interneuronal networks that are coupled by delayed inhibitory and fast electrical synapses. We find that both coupling modes play a crucial role by the synchronization of the network. In addition, delayed inhibitory synapses affect the emerging oscillatory patterns. By increasing the inhibitory synaptic delay, we observe a transition from regular to mixed oscillatory patterns at a critical value. We also examine how the unreliability of inhibitory synapses influences the emergence of synchronization and the oscillatory patterns. We find that low levels of reliability tend to destroy synchronization and, moreover, that interneuronal networks with long inhibitory synaptic delays require a minimal level of reliability for the mixed oscillatory pattern to be maintained.

Zero-lag synchronization and bubbling in delay-coupled lasers

We show experimentally that two semiconductor lasers mutually coupled via a passive relay fiber loop exhibit chaos synchronization at zero lag, and study how this synchronized regime is lost as the lasers' pump currents are increased. We characterize the synchronization properties of the system with high temporal resolution in two different chaotic regimes, namely, low-frequency fluctuations and coherence collapse, identifying significant differences between them. In particular, a marked decrease in synchronization quality develops as the lasers enter the coherence collapse regime. Our high-resolution measurements allow us to establish that synchronization loss is associated with bubbling events, the frequency of which increases with increasing pump current.
