High-Frequency Synchronization Improves Firing Rate Contrast and Information Transmission Efficiency in E/I Neuronal Networks

High-frequency synchronization has been found in many real neural systems and is confirmed by excitatory/inhibitory (E/I) network models. However, the functional role played by it remains elusive. In this paper, it is found that high-frequency synchronization in E/I neuronal networks could improve the firing rate contrast of the whole network, no matter if the network is fully connected or randomly connected, with noise or without noise. It is also found that the global firing rate contrast enhancement can prevent the number of spikes of the neurons measured within the limited time window from being confused by noise, thereby enhancing the information encoding efficiency (quantified by entropy theory here) of the neuronal system. The mechanism of firing rate contrast enhancement is also investigated. Our work implies a possible functional role in information transmission of high-frequency synchronization in neuronal systems.

Global firing rate contrast enhancement in E/I neuronal networks by recurrent synchronized inhibition

Inhibitory synchronization is commonly observed and may play some important functional roles in excitatory/inhibitory (E/I) neuronal networks. The firing rate contrast enhancement is a general feature of information processing in sensory pathways, and a new mechanism of contrast enhancement by inhibitory synchronization in E/I neuronal networks is investigated in this paper. Inspired by the firing rate contrast enhancement phenomenon by the lateral feed-forward inhibition, we reveal that the firing rate contrast enhancement could also occur by recurrent inhibition in E/I networks. It is further found that the synchronized inhibitory neurons act as a global inhibition which can enhance the firing rate contrast of excitatory neurons globally in synchronized E/I networks, even in partially synchronous states. Therefore, the firing rate contrast enhancement might be an important function of inhibitory synchronization and might facilitate information transmission in neural systems.

Limitations and tradeoffs in synchronization of large-scale networks with uncertain links

The synchronization of nonlinear systems connected over large-scale networks has gained popularity in a variety of applications, such as power grids, sensor networks, and biology. Stochastic uncertainty in the interconnections is a ubiquitous phenomenon observed in these physical and biological networks. We provide a size-independent network sufficient condition for the synchronization of scalar nonlinear systems with stochastic linear interactions over large-scale networks. This sufficient condition, expressed in terms of nonlinear dynamics, the Laplacian eigenvalues of the nominal interconnections, and the variance and location of the stochastic uncertainty, allows us to define a synchronization margin. We provide an analytical characterization of important trade-offs between the internal nonlinear dynamics, network topology, and uncertainty in synchronization. For nearest neighbour networks, the existence of an optimal number of neighbours with a maximum synchronization margin is demonstrated. An analytical formula for the optimal gain that produces the maximum synchronization margin allows us to compare the synchronization properties of various complex network topologies.

A new regime for highly robust gamma oscillation with co-exist of accurate and weak synchronization in excitatory-inhibitory networks

A great number of biological experiments show that gamma oscillation occurs in many brain areas after the presentation of stimulus. The neural systems in these brain areas are highly heterogeneous. Specifically, the neurons and synapses in these neural systems are diversified; the external inputs and parameters of these neurons and synapses are heterogeneous. How the gamma oscillation generated in such highly heterogeneous networks remains a challenging problem. Aiming at this problem, a highly heterogeneous complex network model that takes account of many aspects of real neural circuits was constructed. The network model consists of excitatory neurons and fast spiking interneurons, has three types of synapses (GABAA, AMPA, and NMDA), and has highly heterogeneous external drive currents. We found a new regime for robust gamma oscillation, i.e. the oscillation in inhibitory neurons is rather accurate but the oscillation in excitatory neurons is weak, in such highly heterogeneous neural networks. We also found that the mechanism of the oscillation is a mixture of interneuron gamma (ING) and pyramidal-interneuron gamma (PING). We explained the mixture ING and PING mechanism in a consistent-way by a compound post-synaptic current, which has a slowly rising-excitatory stage and a sharp decreasing-inhibitory stage.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN APPLICABILITY OF CURRENT-BASED SYNAPSES AND UNIFORMITY OF FIRING PATTERNS

The purpose of this paper is to identify situations in neural network modeling where current-based synapses are applicable. The applicability of current-based synapse model for studying post-transient behavior of neural networks is discussed in terms of average synaptic current strength induced by per spike during one firing cycle of a neuron (or briefly per spike synaptic current strength). It was found that current-based synapse models are applicable in both situations where both the interspike intervals of the neurons and the distribution of firing times of the neurons are uniform, and where the firing of all neurons is synchronized. If neither the interspike intervals nor the distribution of firing times of the neurons is uniform or the reversal potential is between the rest and threshold potentials, current-based synapse models may be oversimplified.

Complex synchronous behavior in interneuronal networks with delayed inhibitory and fast electrical synapses

Networks of fast-spiking interneurons are crucial for the generation of neural oscillations in the brain. Here we study the synchronous behavior of interneuronal networks that are coupled by delayed inhibitory and fast electrical synapses. We find that both coupling modes play a crucial role by the synchronization of the network. In addition, delayed inhibitory synapses affect the emerging oscillatory patterns. By increasing the inhibitory synaptic delay, we observe a transition from regular to mixed oscillatory patterns at a critical value. We also examine how the unreliability of inhibitory synapses influences the emergence of synchronization and the oscillatory patterns. We find that low levels of reliability tend to destroy synchronization and, moreover, that interneuronal networks with long inhibitory synaptic delays require a minimal level of reliability for the mixed oscillatory pattern to be maintained.
