Towards easier realization of time-delayed feedback control of odd-number orbits

Adaptive delayed feedback control for stabilizing unstable steady states

Delayed feedback control is a commonly used control method for stabilizing unstable periodic orbits and unstable steady states. The present paper proposes an adaptive tuning delay time rule for delayed feedback control focused on stabilizing unstable steady states. The rule is designed to slowly vary the delay time, increasing the difference between the past and current states of dynamical systems, which induces the delay time to automatically fall into the stability region. We numerically confirm that the tuning rule works well for the Stuart-Landau oscillator, FitzHugh-Nagumo model, and Lorenz system.

Generic stabilizability for time-delayed feedback control

Time-delayed feedback control is one of the most successful methods to discover dynamically unstable features of a dynamical system in an experiment. This approach feeds back only terms that depend on the difference between the current output and the output from a fixed time T ago. Thus, any periodic orbit of period T in the feedback-controlled system is also a periodic orbit of the uncontrolled system, independent of any modelling assumptions. It has been an open problem whether this approach can be successful in general, that is, under genericity conditions similar to those in linear control theory (controllability), or if there are fundamental restrictions to time-delayed feedback control. We show that, in principle, there are no restrictions. This paper proves the following: for every periodic orbit satisfying a genericity condition slightly stronger than classical linear controllability, one can find control gains that stabilize this orbit with extended time-delayed feedback control. While the paper's techniques are based on linear stability analysis, they exploit the specific properties of linearizations near autonomous periodic orbits in nonlinear systems, and are, thus, mostly relevant for the analysis of nonlinear experiments.

Feedback control of flow alignment in sheared liquid crystals

Based on a continuum theory, we investigate the manipulation of the nonequilibrium behavior of a sheared liquid crystal via closed-loop feedback control. Our goal is to stabilize a specific dynamical state, that is, the stationary "flow alignment," under conditions where the uncontrolled system displays oscillatory director dynamics with in-plane symmetry. To this end we employ time-delayed feedback control (TDFC), where the equation of motion for the ith component q(i)(t) of the order parameter tensor is supplemented by a control term involving the difference q(i)(t)-q(i)(t-τ). In this diagonal scheme, τ is the delay time. We demonstrate that the TDFC method successfully stabilizes flow alignment for suitable values of the control strength K and τ; these values are determined by solving an exact eigenvalue equation. Moreover, our results show that only small values of K are needed when the system is sheared from an isotropic equilibrium state, contrary to the case where the equilibrium state is nematic.

Systematic experimental exploration of bifurcations with noninvasive control

We present a general method for systematically investigating the dynamics and bifurcations of a physical nonlinear experiment. In particular, we show how the odd-number limitation inherent in popular noninvasive control schemes, such as (Pyragas) time-delayed or washout-filtered feedback control, can be overcome for tracking equilibria or forced periodic orbits in experiments. To demonstrate the use of our noninvasive control, we trace out experimentally the resonance surface of a periodically forced mechanical nonlinear oscillator near the onset of instability, around two saddle-node bifurcations (folds) and a cusp bifurcation.

Analytical limitation for time-delayed feedback control in autonomous systems

We prove an analytical limitation on the use of time-delayed feedback control for the stabilization of periodic orbits in autonomous systems. This limitation depends on the number of real Floquet multipliers larger than unity, and is therefore similar to the well-known odd number limitation of time-delayed feedback control. Recently, a two-dimensional example has been found, which explicitly demonstrates that the unmodified odd number limitation does not apply in the case of autonomous systems. We show that our limitation correctly predicts the stability boundaries in this case.

Phase-reduction-theory-based treatment of extended delayed feedback control algorithm in the presence of a small time delay mismatch

The delayed feedback control (DFC) methods are noninvasive, which means that the control signal vanishes if the delay time is adjusted to be equal to the period of a target unstable periodic orbit (UPO). If the delay time differs slightly from the UPO period, a nonvanishing periodic control signal is observed. We derive an analytical expression for this period for a general class of multiple-input multiple-output systems controlled by an extended DFC algorithm. Our approach is based on the phase-reduction theory adapted to systems with time delay. The analytical results are supported by numerical simulations of the controlled Rössler system.

Adaptive synchronization in delay-coupled networks of Stuart-Landau oscillators

We consider networks of delay-coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators. In these systems, the coupling phase has been found to be a crucial control parameter. By proper choice of this parameter one can switch between different synchronous oscillatory states of the network. Applying the speed-gradient method, we derive an adaptive algorithm for an automatic adjustment of the coupling phase such that a desired state can be selected from an otherwise multistable regime. We propose goal functions based on both the difference of the oscillators and a generalized order parameter and demonstrate that the speed-gradient method allows one to find appropriate coupling phases with which different states of synchronization, e.g., in-phase oscillation, splay, or various cluster states, can be selected.

Adaptive tuning of feedback gain in time-delayed feedback control

We demonstrate that time-delayed feedback control can be improved by adaptively tuning the feedback gain. This adaptive controller is applied to the stabilization of an unstable fixed point and an unstable periodic orbit embedded in a chaotic attractor. The adaptation algorithm is constructed using the speed-gradient method of control theory. Our computer simulations show that the adaptation algorithm can find an appropriate value of the feedback gain for single and multiple delays. Furthermore, we show that our method is robust to noise and different initial conditions.
