Understanding the Nature of the Long-Range Memory Phenomenon in Socioeconomic Systems

In the face of the upcoming 30th anniversary of econophysics, we review our contributions and other related works on the modeling of the long-range memory phenomenon in physical, economic, and other social complex systems. Our group has shown that the long-range memory phenomenon can be reproduced using various Markov processes, such as point processes, stochastic differential equations, and agent-based models-reproduced well enough to match other statistical properties of the financial markets, such as return and trading activity distributions and first-passage time distributions. Research has lead us to question whether the observed long-range memory is a result of the actual long-range memory process or just a consequence of the non-linearity of Markov processes. As our most recent result, we discuss the long-range memory of the order flow data in the financial markets and other social systems from the perspective of the fractional Lèvy stable motion. We test widely used long-range memory estimators on discrete fractional Lèvy stable motion represented by the auto-regressive fractionally integrated moving average (ARFIMA) sample series. Our newly obtained results seem to indicate that new estimators of self-similarity and long-range memory for analyzing systems with non-Gaussian distributions have to be developed.

Anomalous diffusion in nonlinear transformations of the noisy voter model

Voter models are well known in the interdisciplinary community, yet they have not been studied from the perspective of anomalous diffusion. In this paper, we show that the original voter model exhibits a ballistic regime. Nonlinear transformations of the observation variable and time scale allow us to observe other regimes of anomalous diffusion as well as normal diffusion. We show that numerical simulation results coincide with derived analytical approximations describing the temporal evolution of the raw moments.

Intermittency in relation with 1/f noise and stochastic differential equations

One of the models of intermittency is on-off intermittency, arising due to time-dependent forcing of a bifurcation parameter through a bifurcation point. For on-off intermittency, the power spectral density (PSD) of the time-dependent deviation from the invariant subspace in a low frequency region exhibits 1/√f power-law noise. Here, we investigate a mechanism of intermittency, similar to the on-off intermittency, occurring in nonlinear dynamical systems with invariant subspace. In contrast to the on-off intermittency, we consider the case where the transverse Lyapunov exponent is zero. We show that for such nonlinear dynamical systems, the power spectral density of the deviation from the invariant subspace can have 1/f(β) form in a wide range of frequencies. That is, such nonlinear systems exhibit 1/f noise. The connection with the stochastic differential equations generating 1/f(β) noise is established and analyzed, as well.

Heavy-tailed prediction error: a difficulty in predicting biomedical signals of 1/f noise type

A fractal signal x(t) in biomedical engineering may be characterized by 1/f noise, that is, the power spectrum density (PSD) divergences at f = 0. According the Taqqu's law, 1/f noise has the properties of long-range dependence and heavy-tailed probability density function (PDF). The contribution of this paper is to exhibit that the prediction error of a biomedical signal of 1/f noise type is long-range dependent (LRD). Thus, it is heavy-tailed and of 1/f noise. Consequently, the variance of the prediction error is usually large or may not exist, making predicting biomedical signals of 1/f noise type difficult.
