Space-time correlated two-particle hopping in glassy fluids: structural relaxation, irreversibility, decoupling, and facilitation

Dynamic cross-correlations between entangled biofilaments as they diffuse

Entanglement in polymer and biological physics involves a state in which linear interthreaded macromolecules in isotropic liquids diffuse in a spatially anisotropic manner beyond a characteristic mesoscopic time and length scale (tube diameter). The physical reason is that linear macromolecules become transiently localized in directions transverse to their backbone but diffuse with relative ease parallel to it. Within the resulting broad spectrum of relaxation times there is an extended period before the longest relaxation time when filaments occupy a time-averaged cylindrical space of near-constant density. Here we show its implication with experiments based on fluorescence tracking of dilutely labeled macromolecules. The entangled pairs of aqueous F-actin biofilaments diffuse with separation-dependent dynamic cross-correlations that exceed those expected from continuum hydrodynamics up to strikingly large spatial distances of ≈15 µm, which is more than 10⁴ times the size of the solvent water molecules in which they are dissolved, and is more than 50 times the dynamic tube diameter, but is almost equal to the filament length. Modeling this entangled system as a collection of rigid rods, we present a statistical mechanical theory that predicts these long-range dynamic correlations as an emergent consequence of an effective long-range interpolymer repulsion due to the de Gennes correlation hole, which is a combined consequence of chain connectivity and uncrossability. The key physical assumption needed to make theory and experiment agree is that solutions of entangled biofilaments localized in tubes that are effectively dynamically incompressible over the relevant intermediate time and length scales.

The interplay between dynamic heterogeneities and structure of bulk liquid water: A molecular dynamics simulation study

In order to study the interplay between dynamical heterogeneities and structural properties of bulk liquid water in the temperature range 130-350 K, thus including the supercooled regime, we use the explicit trend of the distribution functions of some molecular properties, namely, the rotational relaxation constants, the atomic mean-square displacements, the relaxation of the cross correlation functions between the linear and squared displacements of H and O atoms of each molecule, the tetrahedral order parameter q and, finally, the number of nearest neighbors (NNs) and of hydrogen bonds (HBs) per molecule. Two different potentials are considered: TIP4P-Ew and a model developed in this laboratory for the study of nanoconfined water. The results are similar for the dynamical properties, but are markedly different for the structural characteristics. In particular, for temperatures higher than that of the dynamic crossover between "fragile" (at higher temperatures) and "strong" (at lower temperatures) liquid behaviors detected around 207 K, the rotational relaxation of supercooled water appears to be remarkably homogeneous. However, the structural parameters (number of NNs and of HBs, as well as q) do not show homogeneous distributions, and these distributions are different for the two water models. Another dynamic crossover between "fragile" (at lower temperatures) and "strong" (at higher temperatures) liquid behaviors, corresponding to the one found experimentally at T(∗) ∼ 315 ± 5 K, was spotted at T(∗) ∼ 283 K and T(∗) ∼ 276 K for the TIP4P-Ew and the model developed in this laboratory, respectively. It was detected from the trend of Arrhenius plots of dynamic quantities and from the onset of a further heterogeneity in the rotational relaxation. To our best knowledge, it is the first time that this dynamical crossover is detected in computer simulations of bulk water. On the basis of the simulation results, the possible mechanisms of the two crossovers at molecular level are discussed.

Correlated two-particle diffusion in dense colloidal suspensions at early times: Theory and comparison to experiment

The spatially resolved diffusive dynamic cross correlations of a pair of colloids in dense quasi-two-dimensional monolayers of identical particles are studied experimentally and theoretically at early times where motion is Fickian. In very dense systems where strong oscillatory equilibrium packing correlations are present, we find an exponential decay of the dynamic cross correlations on small and intermediate length scales. At large separations where structure becomes random, an apparent power law decay with an exponent of approximately -2.2 is observed. For a moderately dense suspension where local structural correlations are essentially absent, this same apparent power law decay is observed over all probed interparticle separations. A microscopic nonhydrodynamic theory is constructed for the dynamic cross correlations which is based on interparticle frictional effects and effective structural forces. Hydrodynamics enters only via setting the very short-time single-particle self-diffusion constant. No-adjustable-parameter quantitative predictions of the theory for the dynamic cross correlations are in good agreement with experiment over all length scales. The origin of the long-range apparent power law is the influence of the constraint of fixed interparticle separation on the amplitude of the mean square force exerted on the two tagged particles by the surrounding fluid. The theory is extended to study high-packing-fraction 3D hard sphere fluids. The same pattern of an oscillatory exponential form of the dynamic cross correlation function is predicted in the structural regime, but the long-range tail decays faster than in monolayers with an exponent of -3.

Distributions of single-molecule properties as tools for the study of dynamical heterogeneities in nanoconfined water

The explicit trend of the distribution functions of single-molecule rotational relaxation constants and atomic mean-square displacement are used to study the dynamical heterogeneities in nanoconfined water. The trend of the single-molecule properties distributions is related to the dynamic heterogeneities, and to the dynamic crossovers found in water clusters of different shapes and sizes and confined in a variety of zeolites. This was true in all the cases that were considered, in spite of the various shapes and sizes of the clusters. It is confirmed that the high temperature dynamical crossover occurring in the temperature range 200-230 K can be interpreted at a molecular level as the formation of almost translationally rigid clusters, characterized by some rotational freedom, hydrogen bond exchange and translational jumps as cage-to-cage processes. We also suggest a mechanism for the low temperature dynamical crossover (LTDC), falling in the temperature range 150-185 K, through which the adsorbed water clusters are made of nearly rigid sub-clusters, slightly mismatched, and thus permitting a relatively free librational motion at their borders. It appears that the condition required for LTDC to occur is the presence of highly heterogeneous environments for the adsorbed molecules, with some dangling hydrogen bonds or weaker than water-water hydrogen bonds. Under these conditions some dynamics are permitted at very low temperature, although most rotational motion is frozen. Therefore, it is unlikely, though not entirely excluded, that LTDC will be found in supercooled bulk water where no heterogeneous interface is present.

Coherent neutron scattering and collective dynamics on mesoscale

By combining, and modestly extending, a variety of theoretical concepts for the dynamics of liquids in the supercooled regime, we formulate a simple analytic model for the temperature and wavevector dependent collective density fluctuation relaxation time that is measurable using coherent dynamic neutron scattering. Comparison with experiments on the ionic glass-forming liquid Ca-K-NO3 in the lightly supercooled regime suggests the model captures the key physics in both the local cage and mesoscopic regimes, including the unusual wavevector dependence of the collective structural relaxation time. The model is consistent with the idea that the decoupling between diffusion and viscosity is reflected in a different temperature dependence of the collective relaxation time at intermediate wavevectors and near the main (cage) peak of the static structure factor. More generally, our analysis provides support for the ideas that decoupling information and growing dynamic length scales can be at least qualitatively deduced by analyzing the collective relaxation time as a function of temperature and wavevector, and that there is a strong link between dynamic heterogeneity phenomena at the single and many particle level. Though very simple, the model can be applied to other systems, such as molecular liquids.

Fragile-strong fluid crossover and universal relaxation times in a confined hard-disk fluid

We show that a system of hard disks confined to a narrow channel exhibits a fragile-strong fluid crossover located at the maximum of the isobaric heat capacity and that the relaxation times for different channel widths fall onto a single master curve when rescaled by the relaxation times and temperatures of the crossover. Calculations of the configurational entropy and the inherent structure equation of state find that the crossover is related to properties of the jamming landscape for the model but that the Adam-Gibbs relation does not predict the relaxation behavior. We also show that a facilitated dynamics description of the system, where kinetically excited regions are identified with local packing arrangements of the disks, successfully describes the fragile-strong crossover.
