Scaling behavior of universal pinch-off in two-dimensional foam

Formation and mechanics of fire ant rafts as an active self-healing membrane

The unique ability of fire ants to form a raft to survive flooding rain has enchanted biologists as well as researchers in other disciplines. It was established during the last decade that a three-dimensional aggregation of fire ants exhibits viscoelasticity with respect to external compression and shearing among numerous unusual mechanical properties. Continuing these works, we will study the ant raft in its natural form, i.e., composing no more than two layers. This allowed us to focus on the cracks that are unique to membranes and see how their patterns are influenced by the fact that these ants are mobile and can self-repair the damage to keep their raft from disintegration. In the beginning, we show that vertical and horizontal shaking can also prompt fire ants to aggregate. The canonical view that the stability of ant raft relies on the Cheerios effect and a combination of other parameters is tested. The force-displacement experiment is performed to show that two distinct mechanical responses and fracture patterns, characteristic of ductile and brittle materials, can be elicited, depending on the magnitude of the pull speed. During the process, we counted the number of ants that actively participated in the stress-strain relation and used this information to roughly sketch out the force chain. The latter information reveals that the pull force expedites the alignment of fire ants, in analogy to the effect of an electric field on liquid crystal polymers. To highlight the self-healing nature, we employ the creep experiment to study how the length and Young's modulus of the raft change or relax with time. One major finding is that the raft can exhibit zero Poisson's ratio without resorting to specific geometry structures. This is enabled by the active recruitment of ants from the top layer to the bottom layer to keep the raft from disintegrating.

Necking and failure of a particulate gel strand: signatures of yielding on different length scales

"Sticky" spheres with a short-ranged attraction are a basic model of a wide range of materials from the atomic to the granular length scale. Among the complex phenomena exhibited by sticky spheres is the formation of far-from-equilibrium dynamically arrested networks which comprise "strands" of densely packed particles. The aging and failure of such gels under load is a remarkably challenging problem, given the simplicity of the model, as it involves multiple length- and time-scales, making a single approach ineffective. Here we tackle this challenge by addressing the failure of a single strand with a combination of methods. We study the mechanical response of a single strand of a model gel-former to deformation, both numerically and analytically. Under elongation, the strand breaks by a necking instability. We analyse this behaviour at three different length scales: a rheological continuum model of the whole strand; a microscopic analysis of the particle structure and dynamics; and the local stress tensor. Combining these different approaches gives a coherent picture of the necking and failure. The strand has an amorphous local structure and has large residual stresses from its initialisation. We find that neck formation is associated with increased plastic flow, a reduction in the stability of the local structure, and a reduction in the residual stresses; this indicates that the system loses its solid character and starts to behave more like a viscous fluid. These results will inform the development of more detailed models that incorporate the heterogeneous network structure of particulate gels.

Pinch-off from a foam droplet in a Hele-Shaw cell

Placing some foam on a vertical surface is a ubiquitous situation, for example, such as in shaving and wall cleaning in daily life, and in egg-laying or making foam nests for some animals or insects in nature. In such a situation, one may prefer that the foam remains in the initial position. Moreover, losing solution via liquid pinch-off from the bottom of the foam is undesirable. To address the pinching off condition and mechanism, we conducted a model experiment: we confined an amount of foam in a Hele-Shaw cell. Two sliding down modes, both with and without liquid pinch-off, were observed under gravity. We fabricated morphology phase diagrams, and theoretically clarified the onset of liquid pinch-off from a foamy droplet.

Age-dependent modes of extensional necking instability in soft glassy materials

We study the instability to necking of an initially cylindrical filament of soft glassy material subject to extensional stretching. By numerical simulation of the soft glassy rheology model and a simplified fluidity model, and by analytical predictions within a highly generic toy description, we show that the mode of instability is set by the age of the sample relative to the inverse of the applied extensional strain rate. Young samples neck gradually via a liquidlike mode, the onset of which is determined by both the elastic loading and plastic relaxation terms in the stress constitutive equation. Older samples fail at smaller draw ratios via a more rapid mode, the onset of which is determined only by the solidlike elastic loading terms (though plastic effects arise later, once appreciable necking develops). We show this solidlike mode to be the counterpart, for elastoplastic materials, of the Considère mode of necking in strain-rate-independent solids.
