Microcanonical work and fluctuation relations for an open system: An exactly solvable model

Modified Jarzynski equality in a microcanonical ensemble

We show that the conventional Jarzynski equality does not hold for a system prepared in a microcanonical ensemble. We derive a modified equality that connects microcanonical work fluctuations to entropy production, in an analogous way to the Jarzynski equality, but with reference to an inverse temperature that depends on the path of the work protocol. For close to isothermal processes the modified equality can improve on the bound 〈W〉≥ΔF. Our result is a special case of a general expression for the microcanonical moment-generating function for any extensive quantity, which enables calculation of the breakdown of ensemble equivalence for thermodynamic fluctuations. We demonstrate our microcanonical Jarzynski equality in a system of driven two-level spins.

Work statistics and thermal phase transitions

Many previous studies have demonstrated that work statistics can exhibit certain singular behaviors in the quantum critical regimes of many-body systems at zero or very low temperatures. However, as the temperature increases, it is commonly believed that such singularities will vanish. Contrary to this common recognition, we report a nonanalytic behavior of the averaged work done, which occurs at finite temperature, in the Dicke model as well as the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model subjected to the sudden quenches of their work parameters. It is revealed that work statistics can be viewed as a signature of the thermal phase transition when the quenched parameters are tuned across the critical line that separates two different thermal phases.

Non-Markovianity, entropy production, and Jarzynski equality

We explore the role a non-Markovian memory kernel plays on information exchange and entropy production in the context of a external work protocol. The Jarzynski equality is shown to hold for both the harmonic and the nonharmonic models. We observe the memory function acts as an information pump, recovering part of the information lost to the thermal reservoir as a consequence of the nonequilibrium work protocol. The pumping action occurs for both the harmonic and nonharmonic cases. Unexpectedly, we found that the harmonic model does not produce entropy, regardless of the work protocol. The presence of even a small amount of nonlinearity recovers the more normal entropy producing behavior, for out-of-equilibrium protocols.

Quantum jump model for a system with a finite-size environment

Measuring the thermodynamic properties of open quantum systems poses a major challenge. A calorimetric detection has been proposed as a feasible experimental scheme to measure work and fluctuation relations in open quantum systems. However, the detection requires a finite size for the environment, which influences the system dynamics. This process cannot be modeled with the standard stochastic approaches. We develop a quantum jump model suitable for systems coupled to a finite-size environment. We use the method to study the common fluctuation relations and prove that they are satisfied.
