Random transitions described by the stochastic Smoluchowski-Poisson system and by the stochastic Keller-Segel model

Random Transitions of a Binary Star in the Canonical Ensemble

After reviewing the peculiar thermodynamics and statistical mechanics of self-gravitating systems, we consider the case of a "binary star" consisting of two particles of size a in gravitational interaction in a box of radius R. The caloric curve of this system displays a region of negative specific heat in the microcanonical ensemble, which is replaced by a first-order phase transition in the canonical ensemble. The free energy viewed as a thermodynamic potential exhibits two local minima that correspond to two metastable states separated by an unstable maximum forming a barrier of potential. By introducing a Langevin equation to model the interaction of the particles with the thermal bath, we study the random transitions of the system between a "dilute" state, where the particles are well separated, and a "condensed" state, where the particles are bound together. We show that the evolution of the system is given by a Fokker-Planck equation in energy space and that the lifetime of a metastable state is given by the Kramers formula involving the barrier of free energy. This is a particular case of the theory developed in a previous paper (Chavanis, 2005) for N Brownian particles in gravitational interaction associated with the canonical ensemble. In the case of a binary star (N=2), all the quantities can be calculated exactly analytically. We compare these results with those obtained in the mean field limit N→+∞.

Dynamical large deviations for long-range interacting inhomogeneous systems without collective effects

We consider the long-term evolution of a spatially inhomogeneous long-range interacting N-body system. Placing ourselves in the dynamically hot limit, i.e., assuming that the system only weakly amplifies perturbations, we derive a large deviation principle for the system's empirical angle-averaged distribution function. This result extends the classical ensemble-averaged kinetic theory given by the so-called inhomogeneous Landau equation, as it specifies the probability of typical and large dynamical fluctuations. We detail the main properties of the associated large deviation Hamiltonian, particularly focusing on how it complies with the system's conservation laws and possesses a gradient structure.

Phase transitions in self-gravitating systems and bacterial populations surrounding a central body

We study the nature of phase transitions in a self-gravitating classical gas in the presence of a central body. The central body can mimic a black hole at the center of a galaxy or a rocky core (protoplanet) in the context of planetary formation. In the chemotaxis of bacterial populations, sharing formal analogies with self-gravitating systems, the central body can be a supply of "food" that attracts the bacteria (chemoattractant). We consider both microcanonical (fixed energy) and canonical (fixed temperature) descriptions and study the inequivalence of statistical ensembles. At high energies (respectively, high temperatures), the system is in a "gaseous" phase and at low energies (respectively, low temperatures) it is in a condensed phase with a "cusp-halo" structure, where the cusp corresponds to the rapid increase of the density of the gas at the contact with the central body. For a fixed density ρ_{*} of the central body, we show the existence of two critical points in the phase diagram, one in each ensemble, depending on the core radius R_{*}: for small radii R_{*}R_{*}^{CCP}, there is no phase transition at all. We study how the nature of these phase transitions changes as a function of the dimension of space. We also discuss the analogies and the differences with phase transitions in the self-gravitating Fermi gas [P. H. Chavanis, Phys. Rev. E 65, 056123 (2002)1063-651X10.1103/PhysRevE.65.056123].

Interactions in active colloids

The past two decades have seen a remarkable progress in the development of synthetic colloidal agents which are capable of creating directed motion in an unbiased environment at the microscale. These self-propelling particles are often praised for their enormous potential to self-organize into dynamic nonequilibrium structures such as living clusters, synchronized super-rotor structures or self-propelling molecules featuring a complexity which is rarely found outside of the living world. However, the precise mechanisms underlying the formation and dynamics of many of these structures are still barely understood, which is likely to hinge on the gaps in our understanding of how active colloids interact. In particular, besides showing comparatively short-ranged interactions which are well known from passive colloids (Van der Waals, electrostatic etc), active colloids show novel hydrodynamic interactions as well as phoretic and substrate-mediated 'osmotic' cross-interactions which hinge on the action of the phoretic field gradients which are induced by the colloids on other colloids in the system. The present article discusses the complexity and the intriguing properties of these interactions which in general are long-ranged, non-instantaneous, non-pairwise and non-reciprocal and which may serve as key ingredients for the design of future nonequilibrium colloidal materials. Besides providing a brief overview on the state of the art of our understanding of these interactions a key aim of this review is to emphasize open key questions and corresponding open challenges.

The Generalized Stochastic Smoluchowski Equation

We study the dynamics of a system of overdamped Brownian particles governed by the generalized stochastic Smoluchowski equation associated with a generalized form of entropy and involving a long-range potential of interaction [P.H. Chavanis, Entropy 17, 3205 (2015)]. We first neglect fluctuations and provide a macroscopic description of the system based on the deterministic mean field Smoluchowski equation. We then take fluctuations into account and provide a mesoscopic description of the system based on the stochastic mean field Smoluchowski equation. We establish the main properties of this equation and derive the Kramers escape rate formula, giving the lifetime of a metastable state, from the theory of instantons. We relate the properties of the generalized stochastic Smoluchowski equation to a principle of maximum dissipation of free energy. We also discuss the connection with the dynamical density functional theory of simple liquids.
