Alignment-mediated segregation in an active-passive mixture

We report segregation between the athermal active and passive particles mediated by the local alignment interaction in a confined space. The competition between the alignment interaction and self-propulsion force results in a transition between disordered and ordered phases. We show that as the coordination between the particles increases, they form an ordered mill, which helps the particles to aggregate into isotropic clusters. As a result, particles segregate into active core and passive shells. This segregation phenomenon is adversely affected by the packing fraction and the size dispersion between active and passive particles. We show that this adverse effect can be overcome by incorporating higher coordination in the system. We report that the monodispersed system is more desirable for segregation in a binary mixture than a bidispersed system, as the latter favors the mixed state.

Effect of particle fraction on phase transitions in an active-passive particles system

We study phase transition in a binary system of monodisperse active and passive particles. The particles are initially randomly positioned inside a fixed boundary square enclosure. The active particles can move with their self-propulsion force. Whereas, the passive particles do not have any self-propulsion force, and they move by the spatial interactions with other particles. An alignment force in our discrete element model causes the emergence of collective milling motion. Without this alignment interaction, the particle system remains in a disordered phase. Whereas, the ordered milling phase is attained after achieving a minimum coordination among neighboring particles. The phase transition from disordered to ordered depends upon the relative effect of self-propulsion and the alignment, initial states of the particles, noise level, and the fraction of the active particles present in the system. The phase transition we observed is of first-order nature.

Collective motion patterns of self-propelled agents with both velocity alignment and aggregation interactions

We combine the velocity alignment and aggregation mechanisms to study the collective motion of active agents in noisy circumstances. The agents are located on a two-dimensional square plane, and the proportion of velocity alignment and aggregation interactions are, respectively, set to be k and 1-k. In the case of k=1 our model is similar to the classical Vicsek model, while it degenerates to the view angle model for k=0. By tuning the intensity of the external noise η and the proportional coefficient k, and carrying out extensive numerical simulations, we find that the system can exhibit diverse dynamic patterns widely observed in real biological systems. By means of finite-size scaling analysis, we confirm that the presence of the aggregation interaction affects not only the position of the critical noise η_{c} (beyond which the agents display disordered motion) but also the type of the phase transition of the collective motion. In particular, under a weak external noise environment, the transition from disordered to ordered state by increasing k (i.e., by decreasing the proportion of aggregation interaction) is found to be of first order. Besides, for moderate external noise, we also find the existence of the optimal proportion of the aggregation interaction for the system to achieve the highest degree of order. Our results highlights the important role of the aggregation interaction in the collective motion and may have promising potential applications in natural self-propelled particles and artificial multiagent systems.

Transitions between multiple dynamical states in a confined dense active-particle system

We study the collective motion of a dense suspension of active swimmers in a viscous fluid medium. The swimmers are modeled as soft spheres moving in a highly viscous fluid medium. The magnitude of the propelling thrust exerted by each particle is taken to be a constant and the direction is aligned to its velocity. Depending on the magnitude of the exerted thrust, several nonequilibrium steady states are observed. The transitions between the steady states are characterized using the total dissipation as a function of the magnitude of the thrust. The transitions between the nonequilibrium states are characterized by changes in exponent at low thrust values. At high thrust values, hysteretic transitions between ordered and disordered states are observed.

Self-Organized Fission Control for Flocking System

This paper studies the self-organized fission control problem for flocking system. Motivated by the fission behavior of biological flocks, information coupling degree (ICD) is firstly designed to represent the interaction intensity between individuals. Then, from the information transfer perspective, a “maximum-ICD” based pairwise interaction rule is proposed to realize the directional information propagation within the flock. Together with the “separation/alignment/cohesion” rules, a self-organized fission control algorithm is established that achieves the spontaneous splitting of flocking system under conflict external stimuli. Finally, numerical simulations are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
