Engineered liquid crystal nano droplets: insights from multi-scale simulations

Liquid crystal (LC) droplets have been investigated for a wide range of applications, from displays to sensors. Over the years, a need has arisen for complete understanding of the behaviour of LCs in droplets under different conditions for the development of advanced devices, for which accurate modelling is necessary. We show here, for the first time, both qualitative and quantitative agreement between coarse-grained molecular models and Q-tensor theory calculations for liquid crystal (LC) droplets. The approach is demonstrated for two types of droplet surfaces, which possess strong planar degenerate and strong homeotropic anchoring, respectively. Once its reliability has been proven, our approach was used to identify defects due to changes in anchoring in a small region on the LC droplet surface, which could be triggered, for example, by the adsorption of a nano-particle or a protein. Both coarse-grained simulations and Q-tensor analysis show the appearance of defects in well-determined locations within the LC droplet, albeit sometimes affected by degeneracy due to the symmetry of the systems being investigated. These results suggest the possibility of using LC droplets, in the future, as platforms for advanced sensing as well as for signal intensification.

Compartmentalized liquid crystal alignment induced by sparse polymer ribbons with surface relief gratings

We report on the liquid crystal (LC) alignment induced by sparse polymer ribbons fabricated by the two-photon polymerization-based direct laser writing method. Each ribbon is fabricated by a single scan of the laser through the photoresist and possesses surface relief gratings on both sides. The relief gratings are caused by the optical interference between the incident and reflected laser beams. With the aid of these relief gratings, LC molecules can be well aligned along the selected direction of the ribbons. LC cells with the Z-shaped and checkerboard-type microstructures are constructed based on the sparse out-of-plane polymeric ribbons. Our results show that with such polymer ribbons a compartmentalized LC alignment in the arbitrary microstructures can be realized.

Polarization-independent actively tunable colour generation on imprinted plasmonic surfaces

Structural colour arising from nanostructured metallic surfaces offers many benefits compared to conventional pigmentation based display technologies, such as increased resolution and scalability of their optical response with structure dimensions. However, once these structures are fabricated their optical characteristics remain static, limiting their potential application. Here, by using a specially designed nanostructured plasmonic surface in conjunction with high birefringence liquid crystals, we demonstrate a tunable polarization-independent reflective surface where the colour of the surface is changed as a function of applied voltage. A large range of colour tunability is achieved over previous reports by utilizing an engineered surface which allows full liquid crystal reorientation while maximizing the overlap between plasmonic fields and liquid crystal. In combination with imprinted structures of varying periods, a full range of colours spanning the entire visible spectrum is achieved, paving the way towards dynamic pixels for reflective displays.

Plasmonic nanostructures are a promising alternative to conventional pixels, where their characteristics at the nanoscale offer many benefits. Franklin et al. combine plasmonic surfaces with liquid crystals to create voltage-tunable polarization-independent color pixels for reflective displays.

Chiral structures and defects of lyotropic chromonic liquid crystals induced by saddle-splay elasticity

An experimental and theoretical study of lyotropic chromonic liquid crystals (LCLCs) confined in cylinders with degenerate planar boundary conditions elucidates LCLC director configurations. When the Frank saddle-splay modulus is more than twice the twist modulus, the ground state adopts an inhomogeneous escaped-twisted configuration. Analysis of the configuration yields a large saddle-splay modulus, which violates Ericksen inequalities but not thermodynamic stability. Lastly, we observe point defects between opposite-handed domains, and we explain a preference for point defects over domain walls.
