Non-Additive Entropic Forms and Evolution Equations for Continuous and Discrete Probabilities

Increasing interest has been shown in the subject of non-additive entropic forms during recent years, which has essentially been due to their potential applications in the area of complex systems. Based on the fact that a given entropic form should depend only on a set of probabilities, its time evolution is directly related to the evolution of these probabilities. In the present work, we discuss some basic aspects related to non-additive entropies considering their time evolution in the cases of continuous and discrete probabilities, for which nonlinear forms of Fokker-Planck and master equations are considered, respectively. For continuous probabilities, we discuss an H-theorem, which is proven by connecting functionals that appear in a nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation with a general entropic form. This theorem ensures that the stationary-state solution of the Fokker-Planck equation coincides with the equilibrium solution that emerges from the extremization of the entropic form. At equilibrium, we show that a Carnot cycle holds for a general entropic form under standard thermodynamic requirements. In the case of discrete probabilities, we also prove an H-theorem considering the time evolution of probabilities described by a master equation. The stationary-state solution that comes from the master equation is shown to coincide with the equilibrium solution that emerges from the extremization of the entropic form. For this case, we also discuss how the third law of thermodynamics applies to equilibrium non-additive entropic forms in general. The physical consequences related to the fact that the equilibrium-state distributions, which are obtained from the corresponding evolution equations (for both continuous and discrete probabilities), coincide with those obtained from the extremization of the entropic form, the restrictions for the validity of a Carnot cycle, and an appropriate formulation of the third law of thermodynamics for general entropic forms are discussed.

The κ-statistics approach to epidemiology

A great variety of complex physical, natural and artificial systems are governed by statistical distributions, which often follow a standard exponential function in the bulk, while their tail obeys the Pareto power law. A growing number of applications in different fields of investigation are beginning to prove the relevance and effectiveness of \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\kappa $$\end{document}κ-statistics in fitting empirical data. In this paper, we use \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\kappa $$\end{document}κ-statistics to formulate a statistical approach for epidemiological analysis. We validate the theoretical results by fitting the derived \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\kappa $$\end{document}κ-Weibull distributions with data from the plague pandemic of 1417 in Florence as well as data from the COVID-19 pandemic in China over the entire cycle that concludes in April 16, 2020. As further validation of the proposed approach we present a more systematic analysis of COVID-19 data from countries such as Germany, Italy, Spain and United Kingdom, obtaining very good agreement between theoretical predictions and empirical observations. For these countries we also study the entire first cycle of the pandemic which extends until the end of July 2020. The fact that both the data of the Florence plague and those of the Covid-19 pandemic are successfully described by the same theoretical model, even though the two events are caused by different diseases and they are separated by more than 600 years, is evidence that the \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\kappa $$\end{document}κ-Weibull model has universal features.

Nonlinear Kinetics on Lattices Based on the Kinetic Interaction Principle

Master equations define the dynamics that govern the time evolution of various physical processes on lattices. In the continuum limit, master equations lead to Fokker-Planck partial differential equations that represent the dynamics of physical systems in continuous spaces. Over the last few decades, nonlinear Fokker-Planck equations have become very popular in condensed matter physics and in statistical physics. Numerical solutions of these equations require the use of discretization schemes. However, the discrete evolution equation obtained by the discretization of a Fokker-Planck partial differential equation depends on the specific discretization scheme. In general, the discretized form is different from the master equation that has generated the respective Fokker-Planck equation in the continuum limit. Therefore, the knowledge of the master equation associated with a given Fokker-Planck equation is extremely important for the correct numerical integration of the latter, since it provides a unique, physically motivated discretization scheme. This paper shows that the Kinetic Interaction Principle (KIP) that governs the particle kinetics of many body systems, introduced in G. Kaniadakis, Physica A 296, 405 (2001), univocally defines a very simple master equation that in the continuum limit yields the nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation in its most general form.

Composition law of κ-entropy for statistically independent systems

The intriguing and still open question concerning the composition law of κ-entropy S_{κ}(f)=1/2κ∑_{i}(f_{i}^{1-κ}-f_{i}^{1+κ}) with 0<κ<1 and ∑_{i}f_{i}=1 is here reconsidered and solved. It is shown that, for a statistical system described by the probability distribution f={f_{ij}}, made up of two statistically independent subsystems, described through the probability distributions p={p_{i}} and q={q_{j}}, respectively, with f_{ij}=p_{i}q_{j}, the joint entropy S_{κ}(pq) can be obtained starting from the S_{κ}(p) and S_{κ}(q) entropies, and additionally from the entropic functionals S_{κ}(p/e_{κ}) and S_{κ}(q/e_{κ}),e_{κ} being the κ-Napier number. The composition law of the κ-entropy is given in closed form and emerges as a one-parameter generalization of the ordinary additivity law of Boltzmann-Shannon entropy recovered in the κ→0 limit.

Validity of the third law of thermodynamics for the Tsallis entropy

Bento et al. [Phys. Rev. E 91, 022105 (2015)] recently stated that the Tsallis entropy violates the third law of thermodynamics for 0<q<1 in the subadditive regime. We first show that the division between the regimes q<1 and q>1 is already inherent in the fundamental incomplete structure of the deformed logarithms and exponentials underlying the Tsallis entropy. Then, we provide the complete deformed functions and show that the Tsallis entropy conforms to the third law of thermodynamics for both superadditive q<1 and subadditive q>1 regimes. Finally, we remark that the Tsallis entropy does not require the use of an escort-averaging scheme once it is expressed in terms of the complete deformed functions.

Comment on "Third law of thermodynamics as a key test of generalized entropies"

Bento et al. [Phys. Rev. E 91, 022105 (2015)] state that the Tsallis entropy violates the third law of thermodynamics for q≤0 and 0<q<1. We show that their results are valid only for q≥1, since there is no distribution maximizing the Tsallis entropy for the intervals q≤0 and 0<q<1 compatible with the system energy expression.
