Synchronization of nearly identical dynamical systems: Size instability

Group synchrony, parameter mismatches, and intragroup connections

Group synchronization arises when two or more synchronization patterns coexist in a network formed of oscillators of different types, with the systems in each group synchronizing on the same time evolution, but systems in different groups synchronizing on distinct time evolutions. Group synchronization has been observed and characterized when the systems in each group are identical and the couplings between the systems satisfy specific conditions. By relaxing these constraints and allowing them to be satisfied in an approximate rather than exact way, we observe that stable group synchronization may still occur in the presence of small deviations of the parameters of the individual systems and of the couplings from their nominal values. We analyze this case and provide necessary and sufficient conditions for stability through a master stability function approach, which also allows us to quantify the synchronization error. We also investigate the stability of group synchronization in the presence of intragroup connections and for this case extend some of the existing results in the literature. Our analysis points out a broader class of matrices describing intragroup connections for which the stability problem can be reduced in a low-dimensional form.

Random heterogeneity outperforms design in network synchronization

A widely held assumption on network dynamics is that similar components are more likely to exhibit similar behavior than dissimilar ones and that generic differences among them are necessarily detrimental to synchronization. Here, we show that this assumption does not generally hold in oscillator networks when communication delays are present. We demonstrate, in particular, that random parameter heterogeneity among oscillators can consistently rescue the system from losing synchrony. This finding is supported by electrochemical-oscillator experiments performed on a multielectrode array network. Remarkably, at intermediate levels of heterogeneity, random mismatches are more effective in promoting synchronization than parameter assignments specifically designed to facilitate identical synchronization. Our results suggest that, rather than being eliminated or ignored, intrinsic disorder in technological and biological systems can be harnessed to help maintain coherence required for function.

Stable amplitude chimera states in a network of locally coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators

We investigate the occurrence of collective dynamical states such as transient amplitude chimera, stable amplitude chimera, and imperfect breathing chimera states in a locally coupled network of Stuart-Landau oscillators. In an imperfect breathing chimera state, the synchronized group of oscillators exhibits oscillations with large amplitudes, while the desynchronized group of oscillators oscillates with small amplitudes, and this behavior of coexistence of synchronized and desynchronized oscillations fluctuates with time. Then, we analyze the stability of the amplitude chimera states under various circumstances, including variations in system parameters and coupling strength, and perturbations in the initial states of the oscillators. For an increase in the value of the system parameter, namely, the nonisochronicity parameter, the transient chimera state becomes a stable chimera state for a sufficiently large value of coupling strength. In addition, we also analyze the stability of these states by perturbing the initial states of the oscillators. We find that while a small perturbation allows one to perturb a large number of oscillators resulting in a stable amplitude chimera state, a large perturbation allows one to perturb a small number of oscillators to get a stable amplitude chimera state. We also find the stability of the transient and stable amplitude chimera states and traveling wave states for an appropriate number of oscillators using Floquet theory. In addition, we also find the stability of the incoherent oscillation death states.

Approximate cluster synchronization in networks with symmetries and parameter mismatches

We study cluster synchronization in networks with symmetries in the presence of small generic parametric mismatches of two different types: mismatches affecting the dynamics of the individual uncoupled systems and mismatches affecting the network couplings. We perform a stability analysis of the nearly synchronous cluster synchronization solution and reduce the stability problem to a low-dimensional form. We also show how under certain conditions the low dimensional analysis can be used to predict the overall synchronization error, i.e., how close the individual nearly synchronous trajectories are to each other.

Phase-flip chimera induced by environmental nonlocal coupling

We report the emergence of a collective dynamical state, namely, the phase-flip chimera, from an ensemble of identical nonlinear oscillators that are coupled indirectly via the dynamical variables from a common environment, which in turn are nonlocally coupled. The phase-flip chimera is characterized by the coexistence of two adjacent out-of-phase synchronized coherent domains interspersed by an incoherent domain, in which the nearby oscillators are in out-of-phase synchronized states. Attractors of the coherent domains are either from the same or from different basins of attractions, depending on whether they are periodic or chaotic. The conventional chimera precedes the phase-flip chimera in general. Further, the phase-flip chimera emerges after the completely synchronized evolution of the ensemble, in contrast to conventional chimeras, which emerge as an intermediate state between completely incoherent and coherent states. We have also characterized the observed dynamical transitions using the strength of incoherence, probability distribution of the correlation coefficient, and framework of the master stability function.
