Delays induced cluster synchronization in chaotic networks

We study networks of coupled oscillators and analyze the role of coupling delays in determining the emergence of cluster synchronization. Given a network topology and a particular arrangement of the coupling delays over the network connections, different patterns of cluster synchronization may emerge. We focus on a simple ring network of six bidirectionally coupled identical oscillators, for which with two different values of the delays, a total of eight cluster synchronization patterns may emerge, depending on the assignment of the delays to the ring connections. We analyze stability of each of the patterns and find that for large enough coupling strength and specific values of the delays, they can all be stabilized. We construct an experimental ring of six bidirectionally coupled Colpitts oscillators, with delayed connections obtained by coupling the oscillators via RF cables of appropriate length. We find that experimental observations of cluster synchronization are in essential agreement with theoretical predictions. We also verify our theory in a fully connected network of fifty nodes for which connections are randomly assigned to be either undelayed or delayed with a given probability.

Dynamic modes in a network of five oscillators with inhibitory all-to-all pulse coupling

The dynamic modes of five almost identical oscillators with pulsatile inhibitory coupling with time delay have been studied theoretically. The models of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction and phase oscillators with all-to-all coupling have been considered. In the parametric plane C_inh-τ, where C_inh is the coupling strength and τ is the time delay between a spike in one oscillator and pulsed perturbations of all other oscillators, three main regimes have been found: regular modes, when each oscillator gives only one spike during the global period T, C (complex) modes, when the number of pulses of different oscillators is different, and OS (oscillations-suppression) modes, when at least one oscillator is suppressed. The regular modes consist of several cluster modes and are found at relatively small C_inh. The C and OS modes observed at larger C_inh intertwine in the C_inh-τ plane. In a relatively narrow range of C_inh, the dynamics of the C modes are very sensitive to small changes in C_inh and τ, as well as to the initial conditions, which are the characteristic features of the chaos. On the other hand, the dynamics of the C modes are periodic (but with different periods) and well reproducible. The number of different C modes is enormously large. At still larger C_inh, the C modes lose sensitivity to small changes in the parameters and finally vanish, while the OS modes survive.

Embedding the dynamics of a single delay system into a feed-forward ring

We investigate the relation between the dynamics of a single oscillator with delayed self-feedback and a feed-forward ring of such oscillators, where each unit is coupled to its next neighbor in the same way as in the self-feedback case. We show that periodic solutions of the delayed oscillator give rise to families of rotating waves with different wave numbers in the corresponding ring. In particular, if for the single oscillator the periodic solution is resonant to the delay, it can be embedded into a ring with instantaneous couplings. We discover several cases where the stability of a periodic solution for the single unit can be related to the stability of the corresponding rotating wave in the ring. As a specific example, we demonstrate how the complex bifurcation scenario of simultaneously emerging multijittering solutions can be transferred from a single oscillator with delayed pulse feedback to multijittering rotating waves in a sufficiently large ring of oscillators with instantaneous pulse coupling. Finally, we present an experimental realization of this dynamical phenomenon in a system of coupled electronic circuits of FitzHugh-Nagumo type.

Dynamical regimes of four oscillators with excitatory pulse coupling

Dynamics of four almost identical chemical oscillators pulse coupled via excitatory coupling with time delays are systematically studied.
