Symmetry breaking in clogging for oppositely driven particles

Controlling colloidal flow through a microfluidic Y-junction

Microscopic particles flowing through narrow channels may accumulate near bifurcation points provoking flow reduction, clogging and ultimately chip breakage in a microfluidic device. Here we show that the full flow behavior of colloidal particles through a microfluidic Y-junction can be controlled by tuning the pair interactions and the degree of confinement. By combining experiments with numerical simulations, we investigate the dynamic states emerging when magnetizable colloids flow through a symmetric Y-junction such that a single particle can pass through both gates with the same probability. We show that clogging, induced by the inevitable presence of a stagnation point, can be avoided by repulsive interactions. Moreover we tune the pair interactions to steer branching into the two channels: attractive particles are flowing through the same gate, while repulsive colloids alternate between the two gates. Even details of the particle assembly such as buckling at the exit gate are tunable by the interactions and the channel geometry.

Lane and band formation of oppositely driven colloidal particles in two-dimensional ring geometries

We study the segregation phenomena for oppositely driven colloidal particles in two-dimensional ring geometries by means of Brownian dynamics simulations without hydrodynamic interactions. The particles interact via a repulsive Yukawa potential and are confined to a two-dimensional circular channel by hard walls, in which half of the particles are driven clockwise and the other half are driven counterclockwise. In addition to lane formation, which is commonly found in oppositely driven systems, we found band formation along the angular direction in channels with a very large radius. This indicates that a formation of lanes is prevented in the limit of channels with an infinitely large inner radius. The dependency of this segregation has been examined for the two control parameters, the interaction strength between the particles and the width of the circular channel.

Laning and clustering transitions in driven binary active matter systems

It is well known that a binary system of nonactive disks that experience driving in opposite directions exhibits jammed, phase separated, disordered, and laning states. In active matter systems, such as a crowd of pedestrians, driving in opposite directions is common and relevant, especially in conditions which are characterized by high pedestrian density and emergency. In such cases, the transition from laning to disordered states may be associated with the onset of a panic state. We simulate a laning system containing active disks that obey run-and-tumble dynamics, and we measure the drift mobility and structure as a function of run length, disk density, and drift force. The activity of each disk can be quantified based on the correlation timescale of the velocity vector. We find that in some cases, increasing the activity can increase the system mobility by breaking up jammed configurations; however, an activity level that is too high can reduce the mobility by increasing the probability of disk-disk collisions. In the laning state, the increase of activity induces a sharp transition to a disordered strongly fluctuating state with reduced mobility. We identify a novel drive-induced clustered laning state that remains stable even at densities below the activity-induced clustering transition of the undriven system. We map out the dynamic phase diagrams highlighting transitions between the different phases as a function of activity, drive, and density.
