Merits and qualms of work fluctuations in classical fluctuation theorems

Quantum work statistics in regular and classical-chaotic dynamical billiard systems

In the thermodynamics of nanoscopic systems the relation between classical and quantum mechanical description is of particular importance. To scrutinize this correspondence we have chosen two two-dimensional billiard systems. Both systems are studied in the classical and the quantum mechanical settings. The classical conditional probability density p(E,L|E_{0},L_{0}) as well as the quantum mechanical transition probability P(n,l|n_{0},l_{0}) are calculated, which build the basis for the statistical analysis. We calculate the work distribution for one particle. The results in the quantum case in particular are of special interest since a suitable definition of mechanical work in small quantum systems is already controversial. Furthermore, we analyze the probability of both zero work and zero angular momentum difference. Using connections to an exactly solvable system analytical formulas are given for both systems. In the quantum case we get numerical results with some interesting relations to the classical case.

Quasistatic work processes: When slowness implies certainty

Two approaches are outlined to characterize the fluctuation behavior of work applied to a system by a slow change of a parameter. One approach uses the adiabatic theorems of quantum and classical mechanics, and the other one is based on the behavior of the correlations of the generalized coordinate that is conjugate to the changed parameter. Criteria are obtained under which the work done on small thermally isolated as well as on open systems ceases to fluctuate in a quasistatic process.

Comment on "Measurability of nonequilibrium thermodynamics in terms of the Hamiltonian of mean force"

In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. E 101, 050101(R) (2020)PREHBM2470-004510.1103/PhysRevE.101.050101] an attempt is presented to formulate the nonequilibrium thermodynamics of an open system in terms of the Hamiltonian of mean force. The purpose of the present comment is to clarify severe restrictions of this approach and to stress that recently noted ambiguities [Phys. Rev. E 94, 022143 (2016)PREHBM2470-004510.1103/PhysRevE.94.022143] of fluctuating thermodynamic potentials cannot be removed in the suggested way.

Quantum work fluctuations in connection with the Jarzynski equality

A result of great theoretical and experimental interest, the Jarzynski equality predicts a free energy change ΔF of a system at inverse temperature β from an ensemble average of nonequilibrium exponential work, i.e., 〈e^{-βW}〉=e^{-βΔF}. The number of experimental work values needed to reach a given accuracy of ΔF is determined by the variance of e^{-βW}, denoted var(e^{-βW}). We discover in this work that var(e^{-βW}) in both harmonic and anharmonic Hamiltonian systems can systematically diverge in nonadiabatic work protocols, even when the adiabatic protocols do not suffer from such divergence. This divergence may be regarded as a type of dynamically induced phase transition in work fluctuations. For a quantum harmonic oscillator with time-dependent trapping frequency as a working example, any nonadiabatic work protocol is found to yield a diverging var(e^{-βW}) at sufficiently low temperatures, markedly different from the classical behavior. The divergence of var(e^{-βW}) indicates the too-far-from-equilibrium nature of a nonadiabatic work protocol and makes it compulsory to apply designed control fields to suppress the quantum work fluctuations in order to test the Jarzynski equality.
