Effect of collisional elasticity on the Bagnold rheology of sheared frictionless two-dimensional disks

Rheology of Inelastic Hard Spheres at Finite Density and Shear Rate

Considering a granular fluid of inelastic smooth hard spheres, we discuss the conditions delineating the rheological regimes comprising Newtonian, Bagnoldian, shear thinning, and shear thickening behavior. Developing a kinetic theory, valid at finite shear rates and densities around the glass transition density, we predict the viscosity and Bagnold coefficient at practically relevant values of the control parameters. The determination of full flow curves relating the shear stress σ to the shear rate γ[over ˙] and predictions of the yield stress complete our discussion of granular rheology derived from first principles.

Inertial shear flow of assemblies of frictionless polygons: Rheology and microstructure

Motivated by the understanding of shape effects in granular materials, we numerically investigate the macroscopic and microstructural properties of anisotropic dense assemblies of frictionless polydisperse rigid pentagons in shear flow, and compare them with similar systems of disks. Once subjected to large cumulative shear strains their rheology and microstructure are investigated in uniform steady states, depending on inertial number I, which ranges from the quasistatic limit ([Formula: see text]) to 0.2. In the quasistatic limit both systems are devoid of Reynolds dilatancy, i.e., flow at their random close packing density. Both macroscopic friction angle [Formula: see text], an increasing function of I , and solid fraction [Formula: see text], a decreasing function of I, are larger with pentagons than with disks at small I, but the differences decline for larger I and, remarkably, nearly vanish for [Formula: see text]. Under growing I , the depletion of contact networks is considerably slower with pentagons, in which increasingly anisotropic, but still well-connected force-transmitting structures are maintained throughout the studied range. Whereas contact anisotropy and force anisotropy contribute nearly equally to the shear strength in disk assemblies, the latter effect dominates with pentagons at small I, while the former takes over for I of the order of 10^-2. The size of clusters of grains in side-to-side contact, typically comprising more than 10 pentagons in the quasistatic limit, very gradually decreases for growing I.

Shear banding, discontinuous shear thickening, and rheological phase transitions in athermally sheared frictionless disks

We report on numerical simulations of simple models of athermal, bidisperse, soft-core, massive disks in two dimensions, as a function of packing fraction ϕ, inelasticity of collisions as measured by a parameter Q, and applied uniform shear strain rate γ[over ̇]. Our particles have contact interactions consisting of normally directed elastic repulsion and viscous dissipation, as well as tangentially directed viscous dissipation, but no interparticle Coulombic friction. Mapping the phase diagram in the (ϕ,Q) plane for small γ[over ̇], we find a sharp first-order rheological phase transition from a region with Bagnoldian rheology to a region with Newtonian rheology, and show that the system is always Newtonian at jamming. We consider the rotational motion of particles and demonstrate the crucial importance that the coupling between rotational and translational degrees of freedom has on the phase structure at small Q (strongly inelastic collisions). At small Q, we show that, upon increasing γ[over ̇], the sharp Bagnoldian-to-Newtonian transition becomes a coexistence region of finite width in the (ϕ,γ[over ̇]) plane, with coexisting Bagnoldian and Newtonian shear bands. Crossing this coexistence region by increasing γ[over ̇] at fixed ϕ, we find that discontinuous shear thickening can result if γ[over ̇] is varied too rapidly for the system to relax to the shear-banded steady state corresponding to the instantaneous value of γ[over ̇].
