GOE-GUE-Poisson transitions in the nearest-neighbor spacing distribution of magnetoexcitons

Spectral crossovers in non-Hermitian spin chains: Comparison with random matrix theory

We present a systematic investigation of the short-range spectral fluctuation properties of three non-Hermitian spin-chain Hamiltonians using complex spacing ratios (CSRs). Specifically, we focus on the non-Hermitian variants of the standard one-dimensional anisotropic XY model having intrinsic rotation-time (RT) symmetry that has been explored analytically by Zhang and Song [Phys. Rev. A 87, 012114 (2013)1050-294710.1103/PhysRevA.87.012114]. The corresponding Hermitian counterpart is also exactly solvable and has been widely employed as a toy model in several condensed matter physics problems. We show that the presence of a random field along the x direction together with the one along the z direction facilitates integrability and RT-symmetry breaking, leading to the emergence of quantum chaotic behavior. This is evidenced by a spectral crossover closely resembling the transition from Poissonian to Ginibre unitary ensemble (GinUE) statistics of random matrix theory. Additionally, we consider two phenomenological random matrix models in this paper to examine 1D Poisson to GinUE and 2D Poisson to GinUE crossovers and the associated signatures in CSRs. Here 1D and 2D Poisson correspond to real and complex uncorrelated levels, respectively. These crossovers reasonably capture spectral fluctuations observed in the spin-chain systems within a certain range of parameters.

Controlling Exciton-Phonon Interactions via Electromagnetically Induced Transparency

Highly excited Rydberg states of excitons in Cu_{2}O semiconductors provide a promising approach to explore and control strong particle interactions in a solid-state environment. A major obstacle has been the substantial absorption background that stems from exciton-phonon coupling and lies under the Rydberg excitation spectrum, weakening the effects of exciton interactions. Here, we demonstrate that two-photon excitation of Rydberg excitons under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) can be used to control this background. Based on a microscopic theory that describes the known single-photon absorption spectrum, we analyze the conditions under which two-photon EIT permits separating the optical Rydberg excitation from the phonon-induced absorption background, and even suppressing it entir7ely. Our findings thereby pave the way for the exploitation of Rydberg blockade with Cu_{2}O excitons in nonlinear optics and other applications.

Distribution of the ratio of two consecutive level spacings in orthogonal to unitary crossover ensembles

The ratio of two consecutive level spacings has emerged as a very useful metric in investigating universal features exhibited by complex spectra. It does not require the knowledge of density of states and is therefore quite convenient to compute in analyzing the spectrum of a general system. The Wigner-surmise-like results for the ratio distribution are known for the invariant classes of Gaussian random matrices. However, for the crossover ensembles, which are useful in modeling systems with partially broken symmetries, corresponding results have remained unavailable so far. In this work, we derive exact results for the distribution and average of the ratio of two consecutive level spacings in the Gaussian orthogonal to unitary crossover ensemble using a 3×3 random matrix model. This crossover is useful in modeling time-reversal symmetry breaking in quantum chaotic systems. Although based on a 3×3 matrix model, our results can also be applied in the study of large spectra, provided the symmetry-breaking parameter facilitating the crossover is suitably scaled. We substantiate this claim by considering Gaussian and Laguerre crossover ensembles comprising large matrices. Moreover, we apply our result to investigate the violation of time-reversal invariance in the quantum kicked rotor system.

Chaotization of internal motion of excitons in ultrathin layers by spin-orbit coupling

We show that Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) can generate chaotic behavior of excitons in two-dimensional semiconductor structures. To model this chaos, we study a Kepler system with spin-orbit coupling and numerically obtain a transition to chaos at a sufficiently strong coupling. The chaos emerges since the SOC reduces the number of integrals of motion as compared to the number of degrees of freedom. Dynamically, the dependence of the exciton energy on the spin orientation in the presence of SOC produces an anomalous spin-dependent velocity resulting in chaotic motion. We observe numerically the critical dependence of the dynamics on the initial conditions, where the system can return to and exit a stability domain through very small changes in the initial spin orientation. This chaos can have a strong influence on the lifetime of optically injected carriers in semiconductors and organometallic perovskites. Hence, this effect should be taken into account while designing structures for photovoltaic and optical spintronics applications, where excitons play a significant role.

Crossover between the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble, the Gaussian unitary ensemble, and Poissonian statistics

Until now only for specific crossovers between Poissonian statistics (P), the statistics of a Gaussian orthogonal ensemble (GOE), or the statistics of a Gaussian unitary ensemble (GUE) have analytical formulas for the level spacing distribution function been derived within random matrix theory. We investigate arbitrary crossovers in the triangle between all three statistics. To this aim we propose an according formula for the level spacing distribution function depending on two parameters. Comparing the behavior of our formula for the special cases of P→GUE, P→GOE, and GOE→GUE with the results from random matrix theory, we prove that these crossovers are described reasonably. Recent investigations by F. Schweiner et al. [Phys. Rev. E 95, 062205 (2017)2470-004510.1103/PhysRevE.95.062205] have shown that the Hamiltonian of magnetoexcitons in cubic semiconductors can exhibit all three statistics in dependence on the system parameters. Evaluating the numerical results for magnetoexcitons in dependence on the excitation energy and on a parameter connected with the cubic valence band structure and comparing the results with the formula proposed allows us to distinguish between regular and chaotic behavior as well as between existent or broken antiunitary symmetries. Increasing one of the two parameters, transitions between different crossovers, e.g., from the P→GOE to the P→GUE crossover, are observed and discussed.
