Scaling behavior of information entropy in explosive percolation transitions

An explosive percolation transition is the abrupt emergence of a giant cluster at a threshold caused by a suppression of the growth of large clusters. In this paper, we consider the information entropy of the cluster-size distribution, which is the probability distribution for the size of a randomly chosen cluster. It has been reported that information entropy does not reach its maximum at the threshold in explosive percolation models, a result seemingly contrary to other previous results that the cluster-size distribution shows power-law behavior and the cluster-size diversity (number of distinct cluster sizes) is maximum at the threshold. Here, we show that this phenomenon is due to the fact that the scaling form of the cluster-size distribution is given differently below and above the threshold. We also establish the scaling behaviors of the first and second derivatives of the information entropy near the threshold to explain why the first derivative has a negative minimum at the threshold and the second derivative diverges negatively (positively) at the left (right) limit of the threshold, as predicted through previous simulation.

Growth transitions and critical behavior in the non-equilibrium aggregation of short, patchy nanorods

We have carried out Monte Carlo simulations to study the non-equilibrium aggregation of short patchy nanorods in two dimensions. Below a critical value of patch size ([Formula: see text]), the aggregates have finite sizes with small radii of gyration, [Formula: see text]. At [Formula: see text], the average radius of gyration shows a power law increase with time such that [Formula: see text], where [Formula: see text]. Above, [Formula: see text], the aggregates are fractal in nature and their fractal dimension depends on the value of patch size. These morphological differences are due to the fact that below the critical value of patch size ([Formula: see text]), the growth of the clusters is suppressed and the system reaches an 'absorbed state.' Above [Formula: see text], the system reaches an 'active state,' in which the cluster size keeps growing with a fixed rate at long times. Thus, the system encounters a non-equilibrium phase transition. Close to the transition, the growth rate scales as [Formula: see text], where [Formula: see text]. The long-time growth rate varies as [Formula: see text] where [Formula: see text]. These scaling exponents indicate that the transition belongs to the directed percolation universality class. The patchy nanorods also display a threshold patch size ([Formula: see text]), beyond which the long-time growth rate remains constant. We present geometric arguments for the existence of [Formula: see text]. The fractal dimension of the aggregates increases from 1.75, at [Formula: see text], to 1.81, at [Formula: see text]. It remains constant beyond [Formula: see text].

Redefinition of site percolation in light of entropy and the second law of thermodynamics

In this article, we revisit random site and bond percolation in a square lattice, focusing primarily on the behavior of entropy and the order parameter. In the case of traditional site percolation, we find that both the quantities are zero at p=0, revealing that the system is in the perfectly ordered and in the disordered state at the same time. Moreover, we find that entropy with 1-p, which is the equivalent counterpart of temperature, first increases and then decreases again, but we know that entropy with temperature cannot decrease. However, bond percolation does not suffer from either of these two problems. To overcome this, we propose an alternative definition for site percolation where we occupy sites to connect bonds and we measure cluster size by the number of bonds connected by occupied sites. This resolves all the problems without affecting any of the existing known results.

Universality class of explosive percolation in Barabási-Albert networks

In this work, we study explosive percolation (EP) in Barabási-Albert (BA) network, in which nodes are born with degree k = m, for both product rule (PR) and sum rule (SR) of the Achlioptas process. For m = 1 we find that the critical point t_c = 1 which is the maximum possible value of the relative link density t; Hence we cannot have access to the other phase like percolation in one dimension. However, for m > 1 we find that t_c decreases with increasing m and the critical exponents ν, α, β and γ for m > 1 are found to be independent not only of the value of m but also of PR and SR. It implies that they all belong to the same universality class like EP in the Erdös-Rényi network. Besides, the critical exponents obey the Rushbrooke inequality α + 2β + γ ≥ 2 but always close to equality.

Product-sum universality and Rushbrooke inequality in explosive percolation

We study explosive percolation (EP) on an Erdös-Rényi network for product rule (PR) and sum rule (SR). Initially, it was claimed that EP describes discontinuous phase transition; now it is well accepted as a probabilistic model for thermal continuous phase transition (CPT). However, no model for CPT is complete unless we know how to relate its observable quantities with those of thermal CPT. To this end, we define entropy and specific heat, redefine susceptibility, and show that they behave exactly like their thermal counterparts. We obtain the critical exponents ν,α,β, and γ numerically and find that both PR and SR belong to the same universality class and obey Rushbrooke inequality.
