Abstract
Dynamics of bidirectionally coupled swarmalators subject to attractive and repulsive couplings is analyzed. The probability of two elements in different layers being connected strongly depends on a defined vision range r_{c} which appears to lead both layers in different patterns while varying its values. Particularly, the interlayer static sync π has been found and its stability is proven. First-order transitions are observed when the repulsive coupling strength σ_{r} is very small for a fixed r_{c} and, moreover, in the absence of the repulsive coupling, they also appear for sufficiently large values of r_{c}. For σ_{r}=0 and for sufficiently small values of r_{c}, both layers achieve a second-order transition in a surprising two steps that are characterized by the drop of the energy of the internal phases while increasing the value of the interlayer attractive coupling σ_{a} and later a smooth jump, up to high energy value where synchronization is achieved. During these transitions, the internal phases present rotating waves with counterclockwise and later clockwise directions until synchronization, as σ_{a} increases. These results are supported by simulations and animations added as supplemental materials.

Abstract
Inhibitory couplings are crucial for the normal functioning of many real-world complex systems. Inhibition in one layer has been shown to induce explosive synchronization in another excitatory (or positive) layer of duplex networks. By extending this framework to multiplex networks, this article shows that inhibition in a single layer can act as a catalyst, leading to explosive synchronization transitions in the rest of the layers feed-forwarded through intermediate layer(s). Considering a multiplex network of coupled Kuramoto oscillators, we demonstrate that the characteristics of the transition emergent in a layer can be entirely controlled by the intra-layer coupling of other layers and the multiplexing strengths. The results presented here are essential to fathom the synchronization behavior of coupled dynamical units in multi-layer systems possessing inhibitory coupling in one of its layers, representing the importance of multiplexing.

Abstract
In this work, we investigate the impact of mixed coupling on synchronization in a multiplex oscillatory network. The network mimics the neural-glial systems by incorporating interacting slow ("glial") and fast ("neural") oscillatory layers. Connections between the "glial" elements form a regular periodic structure, in which each element is connected to the eight other neighbor elements, whereas connections among "neural" elements are represented by Watts-Strogatz networks (from regular and small-world to random Erdös-Rényi graph) with a matching mean node degree. We find that the random rewiring toward small-world topology readily yields the dynamics close to that exhibited for a completely random graph, in particular, leading to coarse-graining of dynamics, suppressing multi-stability of synchronization regimes, and the onset of Kuramoto-type synchrony in both layers. The duration of transient dynamics in the system measured by relaxation times is minimized with the increase of random connections in the neural layer, remaining substantial only close to synchronization-desynchronization transitions. "Inhibitory" interactions in the "neural" subnetwork layer undermine synchronization; however, the strong coupling with the "glial" layer overcomes this effect.

Abstract
To date, explosive synchronization (ES) in a network is shown to be originated from considering either degree-frequency correlation, frequency-coupling strength correlation, inertia, or adaptively controlled phase oscillators. Here we show that ES is a generic phenomenon and can occur in any network by multiplexing it with an appropriate layer without even considering any prerequisite for the emergence of ES. We devise a technique which leads to the occurrence of ES with hysteresis loop in a network upon its multiplexing with a negatively coupled (or inhibitory) layer. The impact of various structural properties of positively coupled (or excitatory) and inhibitory layers along with the strength of multiplexing in gaining control over the induced ES transition is discussed. Analytical prediction for the spread of phase distribution of each layer is provided, which is in good agreement with the numerical assessment. This investigation is a step forward in highlighting the importance of multiplex framework not only in bringing phenomena which are not possible in an isolated network but also in providing more structural control over the induced phenomena.

Abstract
Motivated by the recent multiplex framework of complex networks, in this work, we investigate if explosive synchronization can be induced in the multiplex network of two layers. Using nonidentical Kuramoto oscillators, we show that a sufficient frequency mismatch between two layers of a multiplex network can lead to explosive inter- and intralayer synchronization due to mutual frustration in the completion of the synchronization processes of the layers, generating a hybrid transition without imposing any specific structure-dynamics correlation.

Abstract
We focus on spatially-extended networks during their transition from short-range connectivities to a scale-free structure expressed by heavy-tailed degree-distribution. In particular, a model is introduced for the generation of such graphs, which combines spatial growth and preferential attachment. In this model the transition to heterogeneous structures is always accompanied by a change in the graph's degree-degree correlation properties: while high assortativity levels characterize the dominance of short distance couplings, long-range connectivity structures are associated with small amounts of disassortativity. Our results allow to infer that a disassortative mixing is essential for establishing long-range links. We discuss also how our findings are consistent with recent experimental studies of 2-dimensional neuronal cultures.

Abstract
In this paper we study the dynamics of a multiplex multilayer network, where each layer is composed of identical Kuramoto-Sakaguchi phase oscillators with nonlocal coupling. We focus on a three-layer multiplex network and observe a specific form of multiplex network behavior, the macroscopic chimeralike state. It is decomposed by a splitting of the layers with initially close dynamics into subgroups. The first group consists of two layers performing one type of dynamics, whereas the rest perform the other type, after the introduction of interlayer coupling. Based on an intensive computational analysis, we show that areas of macroscopic chimeralike states are observed close to the critical transition points of intralayer (microscopic) states in the parameter space. We find that this macroscopic chimeralike state is excited at weak and medium interlayer coupling strength, wherein the interlayer phase lag here plays an important role, since this is a network parameter which controls macroscopic dynamics and transforms boundaries between intralayer states. The obtained numerical results are validated analytically by considering the multiplex network dynamics using the Ott-Antonsen reduction of the governing network equations.
