Pedestrian evacuations with imitation of cooperative behavior

We analyze the dynamics of room evacuation for mixed populations that include both competitive and cooperative individuals through numerical simulations using the social force model. Cooperative agents represent well-trained individuals who know how to behave in order to reduce risks within high-density crowds. We consider that competitive agents can imitate cooperative behavior when they are in close proximity to cooperators. We study the effects of the imitation of cooperative behavior on the duration and safety of evacuations, analyzing evacuation time and other quantities of interest for varying parameters such as the proportions of mixing, the aspect ratio of the room, and the parameters characterizing individual behaviors. Our main findings reveal that the addition of a relatively small number of cooperative agents into a crowd can reduce evacuation time and the density near the exit door, making the evacuation faster and safer despite an increase in the total number of agents. In particular, for long spaces such as corridors, a small number of added cooperative agents can significantly facilitate the evacuation process. We compare our results with those of systems without imitation and also study the general role of cooperation, providing further analysis for homogeneous populations. Our main conclusions emphasize the potential relevance of training people how to behave in high-density crowds.

Clogging of granular materials in a horizontal hopper: Effect of outlet size, hopper angle, and driving velocity

Due to the independence of the driving velocity and outlet size, it is possible to isolate geometrical and kinematic contributions to clogging in two-dimensional horizontal flow in a hopper driven by a conveyor belt. We experimentally investigate the geometric (outlet size and hopper angle) and kinematic effects (driving velocity) on the clogging in such a horizontal flow. Based on quantitative measurements and analysis of the avalanche size, blocking probability of a particle at the outlet, and other parameters, we show that the geometric factors can more effectively affect clogging. In addition, we find that the clogging tends to be alleviated with the increases of the driving velocity, suggesting a possible "fast is fast" behavior within a wide range of driving velocity. We borrow and modify a model from clogging in gravity-driven hoppers, which can accurately describe the shape of the clogging probability function in the conveyor belt driven flow, suggesting that these two systems could share some mechanisms for clogging.

Constraint relaxation leads to jamming

Adding transitions to an equilibrium system increases the activity. Naively, one would expect this to hold also in out-of-equilibrium systems. We demonstrate, using relatively simple models, how adding transitions to an out of equilibrium system may in fact reduce the activity and even cause it to vanish. This surprising effect is caused by adding heretofore forbidden transitions into less and less active states. We investigate six related kinetically constrained lattice gas models, some of which behave as naively expected while others exhibit this nonintuitive behavior. These models exhibit an absorbing state phase transition, which is also affected by the added transitions. We introduce a semi-mean-field approximation describing the models, which agrees qualitatively with our numerical simulation.
