Cooperative behavior of molecular motions giving rise to two glass transitions in the same supercooled mesophase of a smectogenic liquid crystal dimer

Supramolecular Organization in Monolayers of Pyrene-Functionalized Asymmetric Twist-Bend Nematic Dimers: Comparison with a Three-Dimensional Crystal Structure

Two-dimensional (2D) supramolecular organization of asymmetric liquid crystal dimers containing two chemically different mesogenic groups, namely, cyanobiphenyl and pyreneiminomethyl phenoxy groups, linked with an oligomethylene linker of different length (six or eight -CH2- units), was studied using scanning tunneling microscopy. For this purpose, monolayers of these dimers were deposited on an HOPG substrate from their solutions in hexane by drop-casting and imaged at nanometer resolution after drying. A detailed discussion of two possible different supramolecular organizations is presented. In the case of the first one, termed the "lamellar structure", the molecules in each layer are arranged in parallel molecular rows. Comparative analysis of the monolayer structure with already reported XRD data on 3D organization of the same molecules in a single crystal revealed significant differences resulting from (i) different ordering preferences in 2D and 3D systems and (ii) effects of the interactions of the deposited molecules with the graphite substrate. A small extension of the linker by two methylene groups does not change the type of ordering in the monolayer but causes an extension of the unit cell in one direction, indicating that the lamellar structure is stabilized by rows of densely packed large aromatic pyrene units. Studies of the derivative with a longer linker (containing eight -CH2- units) also showed the possibility of the occurrence of an alternative type of its monolayer organization, termed here "aggregate structure". In this case, the monolayer consists of ordered aggregates of two molecules. According to the authors' knowledge, this type of structural organization has not yet been reported for this family of compounds. It is, however, qualitatively consistent with the already described supramolecular ordering in CBO5O.Py (CCDC 2019485), a compound closely resembling the dimers studied in this research.

Steepness-fragility insights from the temperature derivative analysis of dielectric data of a highly nonsymmetric liquid crystal dimer

A comprehensive dynamic analysis of the dielectric relaxation-time data across a broad temperature range for both isotropic and nematic phases has been conducted on the CBO3O.Py liquid crystal dimer, the shorter chain-length compound within the highly nonsymmetric pyrene-based series of liquid crystal dimers (CBOnO.Py, with n ranging from 3 to 11). It was known from another previous study that in the nematic phase, three different relaxation processes contribute to the complex dielectric permittivity depending on the orientation of the alignment axis with respect to the probing electric field direction. The temperature-derivative analysis of the relaxation-time data using different analytic functions reveals that the critical-like description, through the dynamic scaling model, best portrays the relaxation-time data in the nematic phase as the system approaches the glass transition. A single glass transition temperature is obtained which is consistent with thermal stimulated depolarization currents experimental determinations published elsewhere. From temperature-dependent steepness index m(T), the activation-critical model is also considered as a more general analytic function from which the dynamic scaling model is a terminal approximation. Additionally, the critical-like parametrization provides insight into obtaining a universal description of the temperature-dependent steepness index m(T), for all liquid crystal compounds belonging to symmetry-selected glass formers, such as rodlike liquid crystal monomers.

DNMR measurements of an asymmetric odd liquid crystal dimer: determination of the intramolecular angle and the degree of order of the two rigid cores

In this work, we present a Deuteron Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (DNMR) study of the non-symmetric odd liquid crystal dimer α-(4-cyanobiphenyl-4'-yloxy)-ω-(1-pyrenimine-benzylidene-4'-oxy) heptane (CBO7O.Py), formed by a pro-mesogenic cyanobiphenyl unit and a bulky pyrene-containing unit, linked via alkoxy flexible chain. We have synthesized two partially deuterated samples: one with the deuterium atoms in the cyanobiphenyl moiety (dCBO7O.Py) and the other one with the deuterium atoms in the pyrenimine-benzylidene unit (CBO7O.dPy). We have performed angular distribution analysis in the SmA glassy state, obtaining the degree of order of both rigid cores and an estimation of the internal molecular angle between both structures. With the results from the angular study, we have been able to determine the degree of order of both rigid units in either the N phase and the SmA phase, far enough from the glass transition. Both rigid cores have the same degree of order close to the nematic-isotropic phase transition, but as the compound is cooled down, the degree of order of the cyanobiphenyl moiety is clearly higher than that of the pyrene-containing unit. The critical behaviour of the order parameter of the pyrene-containing moiety is consistent with the fact that, for CBO7O.Py, the N-I phase transition is tricritical, which seems to indicate that the uniaxial order parameter of the dimer is dominated by the degree of order of the pyrene-containing core.

Comparative dielectric and thermally stimulated-depolarization-current studies of the liquid crystal dimers 1″,9″-bis(4-cyanobiphenyl-4'-yl) nonane and heptane and a binary mixture between them, close to the glass transition

We have performed dielectric spectroscopy and thermally stimulated-depolarization-current experiments to study the molecular dynamics of the twist-bend nematic phase close to the glass transition of two members of the 1″,7'-bis(4-cyanobiphenyl-4'-yl)alkane homologous series (CBnCB): the liquid crystal (LC) dimers CB9CB and CB7CB, as well as a binary mixture of both. By doping CB9CB with a small quantity of CB7CB, the crystallization is inhibited when cooling the sample down, while the bulk properties of CB9CB are retained and we can investigate the supercooled behavior close to the glass transition. The study reveals that the inter- and intramolecular interactions of the mixture are similar to those of pure CB9CB and confirms that there is a single glass transition in symmetric LC dimers.

Twist-Bend Nematic Glasses: The Synthesis and Characterisation of Pyrene-based Nonsymmetric Dimers

A selection of pyrene-based liquid crystal dimers have been prepared, containing either methylene-ether or diether linked spacers of varying length and parity. All the diether linked materials, CBOnO.Py (n=5, 6, 11, 12), exhibit conventional nematic and smectic A phases, with the exception of CBO11O.Py which is exclusively nematic. The methylene-ether linked dimer, CBnO.Py, with an even-membered spacer (n=5) was solely nematogenic, but odd-members (n=6, 8, 10) exhibited both nematic and twist-bend nematic phases. Replacement of the cyanobiphenyl fragment by cyanoterphenyl giving CT6O.Py, gave elevated melting and nematic-isotropic transition temperatures, and SmA and SmC_A phases were observed on cooling the nematic phase. Intermolecular face-to-face associations of the pyrene moieties drive glass formation, and all these materials have a glass transition temperature at or above room temperature. The stability of the glassy twist-bend nematic phase allowed for its study using AFM, and the helical pitch length, P_TB , was measured as 6.3 and 6.7 nm for CB6O.Py and CB8O.Py, respectively. These values are comparable to the shortest pitch of a twist-bend nematic phase measured to date.
