Electrohydrodynamic coalescence of droplets using an embedded potential flow model

Microfluidic Study of the Electrocoalescence of Aqueous Droplets in Crude Oil

In electrocoalescence, an electric field is applied to a dispersion of conducting water droplets in a poorly conducting oil to force the droplets to merge in the direction of the field. Electrocoalescence is used in petroleum refining to separate water from crude oil and in droplet-based microfluidics to combine droplets of water in oil and to break emulsions. Using a microfluidic design to generate a two-dimensional (2D) emulsion, we demonstrate that electrocoalescence in an opaque crude oil can be visualized with optical microscopy and studied on an individual droplet basis in a chamber whose height is small enough to make the dispersions two dimensional and transparent. From reconstructions of images of the 2D electrocoalescence, the electrostatic forces driving the droplet merging are calculated in a numerically exact manner and used to predict observed coalescence events. Hence, the direct simulation of the electrocoalescence-driven breakdown of 2D emulsions in microfluidic devices can be envisioned.

Diffusion-controlled coalescence, fragmentation, and collapse of d-dimensional A-particle islands in the B-particle sea

We present a systematic analysis of diffusion-controlled interaction and collapse of two identical spatially separated d-dimensional A-particle islands in the B-particle sea at propagation of the sharp reaction front A+B→0 at equal species diffusivities. We show that at a sufficiently large initial distance between the centers of islands 2ℓ compared to their characteristic initial size and a relatively large initial ratio of island to sea concentrations, the evolution dynamics of the island-sea-island system is determined unambiguously by the dimensionless parameter Λ=N_{0}/N_{Ω}, where N_{0} is the initial particle number in the island and N_{Ω} is the initial number of sea particles in the volume Ω=(2ℓ)^{d}. It is established that (a) there is a d-dependent critical value Λ_{★} above which island coalescence occurs; (b) regardless of d the centers of each of the islands move toward each other along a universal trajectory merging in a united center at the d-dependent critical value Λ_{s}≥Λ_{★}; (c) in one-dimensional systems Λ_{★}=Λ_{s}, therefore, at Λ<Λ_{★} each of the islands dies individually, whereas at Λ>Λ_{★} coalescence is completed by collapse of a single-centered island in the system center; (d) in two- and three-dimensional systems in the range Λ_{★}<Λ<Λ_{s} coalescence is accompanied by subsequent fragmentation of a two-centered island and is completed by individual collapse of each of the islands. We discuss a detailed picture of coalescence, fragmentation, and collapse of islands focusing on evolution of their shape and on behavior of the relative width of the reaction front at the final collapse stage and in the vicinity of starting coalescence and fragmentation points. We demonstrate that in a wide range of parameters, the front remains sharp up to a narrow vicinity of the coalescence, fragmentation, and collapse points.

Numerical study on electrohydrodynamic multiple droplet interactions

We present a numerical study of inviscid multiple droplet coalescence and break-up under the action of electric forces. Using an embedded potential flow model for the droplet hydrodynamics, coupled with an unbounded exterior electrostatic problem, we are able to perform computations through various singular events and analyze the effects of the electrical field intensity on droplet interactions. Laboratory experiments on the electrodynamics of droplet pairs show a much richer, and sometimes unexpected, behavior than that of isolated droplets. For example, it has been found that opposite charged droplets tend to repel each other when the electric field intensity is above a certain critical value. Although the mathematical model employed in this work incorporates very simple flow and electric assumptions, many of the droplet coalescence patterns seen in laboratory experiments can be reproduced. In this model, the interaction pattern of two droplets of radii R_{0} separated a distance D_{0}, depends on the ratio X_{0}=D_{0}/R_{0} and the applied uniform electric field intensity, E_{∞}. By performing a vast number of numerical simulations we are able to characterize the coalescence modes before and after drop merging as a function of these two parameters. The simulations predict that droplet repulsion occurs within a narrow interval of E_{∞} values, different for each X_{0}. Surprisingly, in this E_{∞} interval, a sharp transition between two power-law precoalescence flow regimes is seen. The evolution of several flow characteristics before and after coalescence, and the shape of the deformed droplets at coalescing time and the double cone angle, are also addressed and analyzed in detail. Cone angles below 35^{∘} lead to droplet coalescence for any X_{0} value, which is in accordance with previously reported studies. Finally, it is shown that the model and algorithm can handle multiple droplet interactions. The simulations qualitatively match results from water in oil experiments in microchannels, despite the fact that the exterior fluid is not considered in the mathematical model.
