Origin of the quantum shape effect

The quantum size and shape effects are often considered difficult to distinguish from each other because of their coexistence. Essentially, it is possible to separate them and focus solely on the shape effect by considering a size-invariant shape transformation, which changes the discrete energy spectra of strongly confined systems and causes the quantum shape effects. The size-invariant shape transformation is a geometric technique of transforming shapes by preserving the boundary curvature, topology, and the Lebesgue measure of a bounded domain. The quantum shape effect is a quite different phenomenon from quantum size effects, as it can have the opposite influence on the physical properties of nanoscale systems. While quantum size effects can usually be obtained via bounded continuum approximation, the quantum shape effect is a direct consequence of the energy quantization in specifically designed confined geometries. Here, we explore the origin of the quantum shape effect by theoretically investigating the simplest system that can produce the same physics: quantum particles in a one-dimensional box separated by a moving partition. The partition moves quasistatically from one end of the box to the other, allowing the system to remain in equilibrium with a reservoir throughout the process. The partition and the boundaries are impenetrable by particles, forming two effectively interconnected regions. The position of the partition becomes the shape variable. We investigate the quantum shape effect on the thermodynamic properties of confined particles considering their discrete spectrum. In addition, we applied an analytical model based on dimensional transitions to predict thermodynamic properties under the quantum shape effect accurately. A fundamental understanding of quantum shape effects could pave the way for employing them to engineer physical properties and design better materials at the nanoscale.

Fast-forward scaling theory

Speed is the key to further advances in technology. For example, quantum technologies, such as quantum computing, require fast manipulations of quantum systems in order to overcome the effect of decoherence. However, controlling the speed of quantum dynamics is often very difficult due to both the lack of a simple scaling property in the dynamics and the infinitely large parameter space to be explored. Therefore, protocols for speed control based on understanding of the dynamical properties of the system, such as non-trivial scaling property, are highly desirable. Fast-forward scaling theory (FFST) was originally developed to provide a way to accelerate, decelerate, stop and reverse the dynamics of quantum systems. FFST has been extended in order to accelerate quantum and classical adiabatic dynamics of various systems including cold atoms, internal state of molecules, spins and solid-state artificial atoms. This paper describes the basic concept of FFST and reviews the recent developments and its applications such as fast state-preparations, state protection and ion sorting. We introduce a method, called inter-trajectory travel, recently derived from FFST. We also point out the significance of deceleration in quantum technology. Fast-forward approach to stochastic heat engine

The fast-forward (FF) scheme proposed by Masuda and Nakamura [Proc. R. Soc. A 466, 1135 (2010)1364-502110.1098/rspa.2009.0446] in the context of conservative quantum dynamics can reproduce a quasistatic dynamics in an arbitrarily short time. We apply the FF scheme to the classical stochastic Carnot-like heat engine which is driven by a Brownian particle coupled with a time-dependent harmonic potential and working between the high- (T_{h}) and low- (T_{c}) temperature heat reservoirs. Concentrating on the underdamped case where momentum degree of freedom is included, we find the explicit expressions for the FF protocols necessary to accelerate both the isothermal and thermally adiabatic processes and obtain the reversible and irreversible works. The irreversible work is shown to consist of two terms with one proportional to and the other inversely proportional to the friction coefficient. The optimal value of efficiency η at the maximum power of this engine is found to be η^{*}=1/2{1+1/2(T_{c}/T_{h})^{1/2}-5/4T_{c}/T_{h}+O[(T_{c}/T_{h})^{3/2}]} and η^{*}=1-(T_{c}/T_{h})^{1/2}, respectively, in the cases of strong and weak dissipation. The result is justified for a wide family of time-scaling functions, making the FF protocols very flexible. We also revealed that the accelerated full cycle of the Carnot-like stochastic heat engine cannot be conceivable within the framework of the overdamped case, and the power and efficiency can be evaluated only when the momentum degree of freedom is taken into consideration.
