Friction Dynamics of Foams under Nonlinear Motion

Foams are viscoelastic soft materials with complex mechanical properties. Here, we evaluated the friction dynamics of foams between acrylic plates using a sinusoidal motion friction evaluation system and we found some interesting characteristics under accelerated conditions. On a typical solid surface, a symmetrical friction profile, in which static and kinetic frictions are observed, is obtained under reciprocating nonlinear motion. Meanwhile, significant lubricant effects and velocity-dependent friction profiles without static friction were observed in foams. The friction force in foams increased in proportion to the power of velocity, with a power index of <1. These characteristic and dynamic phenomena in foams were observed in this study. They had been caused by the formation of a thick lubricant film and various dissipative modes including surfactant diffusion, viscous dissipation, and wall slip of bubbles. Moreover, the addition of a thickener increased the friction force and the delay time of friction response and improved the foam durability against normal force and shear. These findings are useful for understanding dynamic phenomena in soft materials.

Shear softening and hardening of a two-dimensional Yukawa solid

Langevin dynamical simulations are performed to study the elastic behaviors of two-dimensional (2D) solid dusty plasmas under the periodic shear deformation. The frequency- and strain-dependent shear moduli G(ω,γ) of our simulated 2D Yukawa solid are calculated from the ratio of the shear stress to strain in different orientations. The shear-softening and -hardening properties in different lattice orientations are discovered from the obtained G(ω,γ). The component of the elastic constant tensor corresponding to the shear deformation is also calculated, whose variation trend exactly agrees with the discovered shear-softening and -hardening features in different shear directions. It is also found that the shear modulus of the 2D Yukawa solid always increases monotonically with the frequency.

Quasistatic rheology of soft cellular systems using the cellular Potts model

Soft cellular systems, such as foams or biological tissues, exhibit highly complex rheological properties, even in the quasistatic regime, that numerical modeling can help to apprehend. We present a numerical implementation of quasistatic strain within the widely used cellular Potts model (CPM). The accuracy of the method is tested by simulating the quasistatic strain of two-dimensional dry foams, both ordered and disordered. The implementation of quasistatic strain in CPM allows the investigation of sophisticated interplays between stress-strain relationship and structural changes that take place in cellular systems.
