Energy dissipation of rigid dipoles in a viscous fluid under the action of a time-periodic field: The influence of thermal bath and dipole interaction

Feature Matching of Microsecond-Pulsed Magnetic Fields Combined with Fe3O4 Particles for Killing A375 Melanoma Cells

The combination of magnetic fields and magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) to kill cancer cells by magneto-mechanical force represents a novel therapy, offering advantages such as non-invasiveness, among others. Pulsed magnetic fields (PMFs) hold promise for application in this therapy due to advantages such as easily adjustable parameters; however, they suffer from the drawback of narrow pulse width. In order to fully exploit the potential of PMFs and MNPs in this therapy, while maximizing therapeutic efficacy within the constraints of the narrow pulse width, a feature-matching theory is proposed, encompassing the matching of three aspects: (1) MNP volume and critical volume of Brownian relaxation, (2) relaxation time and pulse width, and (3) MNP shape and the intermittence of PMF. In the theory, a microsecond-PMF generator was developed, and four kinds of MNPs were selected for in vitro cell experiments. The results demonstrate that the killing rate of the experimental group meeting the requirements of the theory is at least 18% higher than the control group. This validates the accuracy of our theory and provides valuable guidance for the further application of PMFs in this therapy.

Synergistic interactions of binary suspensions of magnetic anisotropic particles

We report the effect of the dipole-dipole interaction and shape anisotropy in suspensions of permanently magnetized anisotropic particles. We quantify the dipolar interaction energy using an ellipsoid-dipole model to describe particles with similar or dissimilar shapes. The expression captures the physics of the point-dipole interaction energy between uniformly magnetized spherical particles. Additionally, we report Monte Carlo simulations to describe the effect of dipolar interaction and shape anisotropy under different field strengths. Results show that the shape anisotropy and dipolar interactions modify the head-to-tail interaction with respect to spheres, promoting dendritic and barbed-wire structures in uniform ellipsoids and binary mixtures, respectively. Furthermore, competing entropic and energy interactions generate a synergistic effect reducing the magnetic response of binary suspensions.

Nonequilibrium driven by an external torque in the presence of a magnetic field

We investigate a two-dimensional motion of a colloid in a harmonic trap driven out of equilibrium by an external nonconservative force producing a torque in the presence of a uniform magnetic field applied perpendicular to the plane of motion. We find a circulating steady-state current diagnostic to nonequilibrium. Unlikely in the overdamped limit, inertial motion requires a sufficient central force to reach steady state. The magnetic field can enhance or depress central force depending on its direction. We find that steady state exists only for a proper range of parameters such as mass, viscosity coefficient, stiffness of the harmonic potential, and the magnetic field. We rigorously derive the existence condition for the steady state. We examine the combined influence of nonconservative force and magnetic field on nonequilibrium characteristics. We find non-Boltzmann steady-state probability density function and circulating probability current. We show that nonnegative entropy production is composed of usual heat dissipation and unconventional contribution from velocity-dependence of the Lorentz force. We derive the full list of correlation functions, including position-velocity correlation function originated from nonequilibrium circulation. We finally give rigorous expression for the violation of fluctuation-dissipation relation. We verify our analytical results by using the Monte Carlo simulation.

Dynamics and energy dissipation of a rigid dipole driven by the RF-field in a viscous fluid: Deterministic approach

The deterministic rotation of a ferromagnetic nanoparticle in a fluid is considered. The heating arising from viscous friction of a nanoparticle driven by circularly and linearly polarized alternating magnetic fields is investigated. Since the power loss of such fields depends on the character of the induced motion of a nanoparticle, all types of particle trajectories are described in detail. The dependences of the power loss on the alternating field parameters are determined. The optimal conditions for obtaining the maximum heating efficiency are discussed. The effect of heating enhancement by a static field is analyzed. The results obtained can be actual for the description of heating in the magnetic fluid hyperthermia cancer treatment, when the size of the particles used is a few tens of nanometers.
