Creeplike behavior in athermal threshold dynamics: Effects of disorder and stress

Hidden jerk in universal creep and aftershocks

Most materials exhibit creep memory under the action of a constant load. The memory behavior is governed by Andrade's creep law, which also has an inherent connection with the Omori-Utsu law of earthquake aftershocks. Both empirical laws lack a deterministic interpretation. Coincidentally, the Andrade law is similar to the time-varying part of the creep compliance of the fractional dashpot in anomalous viscoelastic modeling. Consequently, fractional derivatives are invoked, but since they lack a physical interpretation, the physical parameters of the two laws extracted from curve fit lack confidence. In this Letter, we establish an analogous linear physical mechanism that underlies both laws and relates its parameters with the material's macroscopic properties. Surprisingly, the explanation does not require the property of viscosity. Instead, it necessitates the existence of a rheological property that relates strain with the first order time derivative of stress, which involves jerk. Further, we justify the constant quality factor model of acoustic attenuation in complex media. The obtained results are validated in light of the established observations.

Brittle to quasibrittle transition in a compound fiber bundle

The brittle to quasibrittle transition has been studied for a compound of two different kinds of fibrous materials, having distinct difference in their breaking strengths under the framework of the fiber bundle model. A random fiber bundle model has been devised with a bimodal distribution of the breaking strengths of the individual fibers. The bimodal distribution is assumed to consist of two symmetrically placed rectangular probability distributions of strengths p and 1-p, each of width d, and separated by a gap 2s. Different properties of the transition have been studied varying these three parameters and using the well-known equal load-sharing dynamics. Our study exhibits a brittle to quasibrittle transition at the critical width d_{c}(s,p)=p(1/2-s)/(1+p) confirmed by our numerical results.

Creep dynamics of athermal amorphous materials: a mesoscopic approach

Yield stress fluids display complex dynamics, in particular when driven into the transient regime between the solid and the flowing state. Inspired by creep experiments on dense amorphous materials, we implement mesoscale elasto-plastic descriptions to analyze such transient dynamics in athermal systems. Both our mean-field and space-dependent approaches consistently reproduce the typical experimental strain rate responses to different applied steps in stress. Moreover, they allow us to understand basic processes involved in the strain rate slowing down (creep) and the strain rate acceleration (fluidization) phases. The fluidization time increases in a power-law fashion as the applied external stress approaches a static yield stress. This stress value is related to the stress over-shoot in shear start-up experiments, and it is known to depend on sample preparation and age. By calculating correlations of the accumulated plasticity in the spatially resolved model, we reveal different modes of cooperative motion during the creep dynamics.
