Spiral waves in driven strongly coupled Yukawa systems

Spatiotemporal patterns and collective dynamics of bi-layer coupled Izhikevich neural networks with multi-area channels

The firing behavior and bifurcation of different types of Izhikevich neurons are analyzed firstly through numerical simulation. Then, a bi-layer neural network driven by random boundary is constructed by means of system simulation, in which each layer is a matrix network composed of 200 × 200 Izhikevich neurons, and the bi-layer neural network is connected by multi-area channels. Finally, the emergence and disappearance of spiral wave in matrix neural network are investigated, and the synchronization property of neural network is discussed. Obtained results show that random boundary can induce spiral waves under appropriate conditions, and it is clear that the emergence and disappearance of spiral wave can be observed only when the matrix neural network is constructed by regular spiking Izhikevich neurons, while it cannot be observed in neural networks constructed by other modes such as fast spiking, chattering and intrinsically bursting. Further research shows that the variation of synchronization factor with coupling strength between adjacent neurons shows an inverse bell-like curve in the form of "inverse stochastic resonance", but the variation of synchronization factor with coupling strength of inter-layer channels is a curve that is approximately monotonically decreasing. More importantly, it is found that lower synchronicity is helpful to develop spatiotemporal patterns. These results enable people to further understand the collective dynamics of neural networks under random conditions.

Rotating vortices in two-dimensional inhomogeneous strongly coupled dusty plasmas: Shear and spiral density waves

Dusty plasma experiments can be performed quite easily in a strong coupling regime. In our previous work [V. S. Dharodi, S. K. Tiwari, and A. Das, Physics of Plasmas 21, 073705 (2014)]PHPAEN1070-664X10.1063/1.4888882, we numerically explored such plasmas with constant density and observed the transverse shear (TS) waves from the rotating vortex. Laboratory dusty plasmas are good examples of homogeneous plasmas; however, heterogeneity (e.g., density, temperature, and charge) may be due to the existence of voids, different domains with different orientations, presence of external forces like magnetic and/or electric, size or charge imbalance, etc. Here, we examine how the density heterogeneity in dusty plasmas responds to the circularly rotating vortex monopoles, specifically, smooth and sharp cutoff. For this purpose, we have carried out a series of two-dimensional fluid simulations in the framework of the incompressible generalized hydrodynamics fluid model. The rotating vortices are placed at the interface of two incompressible fluids with different densities. The smooth rotating vortex causes two effects: First, the regions are stretched to form the spiral density waves; second, there is a shear in flows which consequently induces the TS waves. The TS waves move slower in the denser side than in the lighter side. The difference in speeds of the waves induces the net flow of the medium towards the lower density side. We notice that the spiral density arms are distinguishable in the early time while later they get smeared out. In sharp flows, the interplay between the TS waves and the vortices of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability distorts the formation of the regular spiral density arms around the rotor.

Plasma-grain interaction mediated by streaming non-Maxwellian ions

A comprehensive parametric study of plasma-grain interaction for non-Maxwellian streaming ions in steady-state employing particle-in-cell simulations is delineated. Instead of considering the intergrain interaction potential to be the linear sum of isolated grain potentials, we incorporate the numerical advancement developed fully for grain shielding by including nonlinear contributions from the plasma and shadowing effect. The forces acting on grains versus intergrain distance, streaming velocity of the ions, and impact of trapped ions density (number) are characterized for non-Maxwellian ions in the presence of charge-exchange collisions. It is found that the nonlinear plasma response considerably modifies the plasma-grain interaction. Unlike the stationary plasma case, for two identical grains separated by a distance in the presence of streaming ions, the electrostatic force is neither repulsive for all grain separations nor equivalent to the force due to one isolated grain. Inadequacy of the linear response formalism in dealing with the systems having very large grain charges is also discussed. The smallest intergrain separation for which the role of the shadow effect can be ignored is reported.
