Abstract
We experimentally clarify the interaction of acoustic pressure and heat release rate fluctuations during a transition to high-frequency combustion instability in a model rocket engine combustor. The dynamical state of acoustic pressure fluctuations undergoes a transition from high-dimensional chaotic oscillations to strongly correlated limit cycle oscillations. The coherent structure in the heat release rate field emerges with the initiation of weakly correlated limit cycle oscillations. The effect of the heat release rate on acoustic pressure fluctuations predominates during high-dimensional chaotic oscillations. In contrast, the effect of acoustic pressure on the heat release rate fluctuations markedly increases during the correlated limit cycle oscillations. These are reasonably shown by an ordinal pattern-based analysis involving the concepts of information theory, synchronization, and complex networks.

Abstract
This study numerically examines the gravitational effect on the nonlinear dynamics of a buoyant turbulent flame utilizing analytical methods based on complex networks and dynamical systems. A dense (sparse) network structure is formed in the near (far) field in low gravity, as shown by the degree and cluster coefficient in the spatial network. The global dynamics of the vertical flow velocity fluctuations in the intermittent luminous zone is synchronous with that of the temperature fluctuations in low gravity. The synchronized state disappears as the gravity level is increased, leading to a desynchronized state. These behaviors are clearly identified by the symbolic recurrence plots.

Abstract
The incidental or malicious release of toxic gases in the atmosphere is one of the most critical scenarios for cities. The impact of these releases varies with the ventilation potential of the urban environment. To disentangle this crucial aspect, vulnerability to airborne releases is here traced back to essential properties of the urban fabric. To this aim, pollutant dispersion is disassembled in its fundamental bricks and the main drivers of the process are captured. The analysis is based on four cities with emblematic architectures: Paris, Firenze, Lyon and New York. Results show that vulnerability is driven by the topology of the city and by its interaction with the approaching wind. In this sense, fragility to toxic releases is written in the layout of the urban fabric and results from its historical evolution. This study paves the way to the assessment of air pollution-related issues from a morphological point of view.

Abstract
Atherosclerosis at the early stage in coronary arteries has been associated with low cycle-average wall shear stress magnitude. However, parallel to the identification of an established active role for low wall shear stress in the onset/progression of the atherosclerotic disease, a weak association between lesions localization and low/oscillatory wall shear stress has been observed. In the attempt to fully identify the wall shear stress phenotype triggering early atherosclerosis in coronary arteries, this exploratory study aims at enriching the characterization of wall shear stress emerging features combining correlation-based analysis and complex networks theory with computational hemodynamics. The final goal is the characterization of the spatiotemporal and topological heterogeneity of wall shear stress waveforms along the cardiac cycle. In detail, here time-histories of wall shear stress magnitude and wall shear stress projection along the main flow direction and orthogonal to it (a measure of wall shear stress multidirectionality) are analyzed in a representative dataset of 10 left anterior descending pig coronary artery computational hemodynamics models. Among the main findings, we report that the proposed analysis quantitatively demonstrates that the model-specific inlet flow-rate shapes wall shear stress time-histories. Moreover, it emerges that a combined effect of low wall shear stress magnitude and of the shape of the wall shear stress–based descriptors time-histories could trigger atherosclerosis at its earliest stage. The findings of this work suggest for new experiments to provide a clearer determination of the wall shear stress phenotype which is at the basis of the so-called arterial hemodynamic risk hypothesis in coronary arteries.

Abstract
The dispersion of airborne pollutants in the urban atmosphere is a complex, canopy-driven process. The intricate structure of the city, the high number of potential sources, and the large spatial domain make it difficult to predict dispersion patterns, to simulate a great number of scenarios, and to identify the high-impact emission areas. Here we show that these complex transport dynamics can be efficiently characterized by adopting a complex network approach. The urban canopy layer is represented as a complex network. Street canyons and their intersections shape the spatial structure of the network. The direction and the transport capacity of the flow in the streets define the direction and the weight of the links. Within this perspective, pollutant contamination from a source is modeled as a spreading process on a network, and the most dangerous areas in a city are identified as the best spreading nodes. To this aim, we derive a centrality metric tailored to mass transport in flow networks. By means of the proposed approach, vulnerability maps of cities are rapidly depicted, revealing the nontrivial relation between urban topology, transport capacity of the street canyons, and forcing of the external wind. The network formalism provides promising insight in the comprehensive analysis of the fragility of cities to air pollution.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The study of the arterial hemodynamics is essential for a better understanding of the risks associated with the onset/progression of vascular disease. However, conventional quantification and visualization paradigms are not sufficient to fully capture the spatiotemporal evolution of correlated blood flow patterns and their "sphere of influence" in complex vascular geometries. In the attempt to bridge this knowledge gap, an integrated computational hemodynamics and complex networks-based approach is proposed to unveil organization principles of cardiovascular flows. METHODS The approach is applied to ten patient-specific hemodynamic models of carotid bifurcation, a vascular bed characterized by a complex hemodynamics and clinically-relevant disease. Correlation-based networks are built starting from time-histories of two fluid mechanics quantities of physiological significance, respectively (1) the blood velocity vector axial component locally aligned with the main flow direction, and (2) the kinetic helicity density. RESULTS Unlike conventional hemodynamic analyses, here the spatiotemporal similarity of dynamic intravascular flow structures is encoded in a distance function. In the case of the carotid bifurcation, this study measures for the first time to what extent flow similarity is disrupted by vascular geometric features. CONCLUSION It emerges that a larger bifurcation expansion, a hallmark of vascular disease, significantly disrupts the network topological connections between axial flow structures, reducing also their anatomical persistence length. On the contrary, connections in helical flow patterns are overall less geometry-sensitive. SIGNIFICANCE The integrated approach proposed here, by exploiting the connections of hemodynamic patterns undergoing similar dynamical evolution, opens avenues for further comprehension of vascular physiopathology.

Abstract
Vortical flow patterns generated by swimming animals or flow separation (e.g. behind bluff objects such as cylinders) provide important insight to global flow behaviour such as fluid dynamic drag or propulsive performance. The present work introduces a new method for quantitatively comparing and classifying flow fields using a novel graph-theoretic concept, called a weighted Gabriel graph, that employs critical points of the velocity vector field, which identify key flow features such as vortices, as graph vertices. The edges (connections between vertices) and edge weights of the weighted Gabriel graph encode local geometric structure. The resulting graph exhibits robustness to minor changes in the flow fields. Dissimilarity between flow fields is quantified by finding the best match (minimum difference) in weights of matched graph edges under relevant constraints on the properties of the edge vertices, and flows are classified using hierarchical clustering based on computed dissimilarity. Application of this approach to a set of artificially generated, periodic vortical flows demonstrates high classification accuracy, even for large perturbations, and insensitivity to scale variations and number of periods in the periodic flow pattern. The generality of the approach allows for comparison of flows generated by very different means (e.g. different animal species).
