Engineering ratchet-based particle separation via extended shortcuts to isothermality

Microscopic particle separation plays a vital role in various scientific and industrial domains. Conventional separation methods relying on external forces or physical barriers inherently exhibit limitations in terms of efficiency, selectivity, and adaptability across diverse particle types. To overcome these limitations, researchers are constantly exploring new separation approaches, among which ratchet-based separation is a noteworthy method. However, in contrast to the extensive numerical studies and experimental investigations on ratchet separation, its theoretical exploration appears weak, particularly lacking in the analysis of energy consumption involved in the separation processes. The latter is of significant importance for achieving energetically efficient separation. In this paper, we propose a nonequilibrium thermodynamic approach, extending the concept of shortcuts to isothermality, to realize controllable separation of overdamped Brownian particles with low energy cost. By utilizing a designed ratchet potential with temporal period τ, we find in the slow-driving regime that the average particle velocity v[over ¯]_{s}∝(1-D/D^{*})τ^{-1}, indicating that particles with different diffusion coefficients D can be guided to move in distinct directions with a preset D^{*}. It is revealed that an inevitable portion of the energy cost in separation depends on the driving dynamics of the ratchet, with an achievable lower bound W_{ex}^{(min)}∝L^{2}|v[over ¯]_{s}|. Here, L is the thermodynamic length of the driving loop in the parametric space. With a sawtooth potential, we numerically test the theoretical findings and illustrate the optimal separation protocol associated with W_{ex}^{(min)}. Finally, for practical considerations, we compare our approach with the conventional ratchets in terms of separation velocity and energy consumption. The scalability of the current framework for separating various particles in two-dimensional space is also demonstrated. This paper bridges the gap between thermodynamic process control and particle separation, paving the way for further thermodynamic optimization in ratchet-based particle separation.

Exactly solvable model of a slightly fluctuating ratchet

We consider the motion of a Brownian particle in a sawtooth potential dichotomously modulated by a spatially harmonic perturbation. An explicit expression for the Laplace transform of the Green function of an extremely asymmetric sawtooth potential is obtained. With this result, within the approximation of small potential-energy fluctuations, the integration of the relations for the average particle velocity is performed in elementary terms. The obtained analytical result, its high-temperature, low-frequency, and high-frequency asymptotics, as well as numerical calculations performed for a sawtooth potential of an arbitrary symmetry, indicate that in such a system, the frequency-temperature controlling the magnitude and direction of the ratchet velocity becomes possible. We clarify the mechanism of the appearance of additional regions of nonmonotonicity in the frequency dependence of the average velocity, which leads to the appearance of additional ratchet stopping points. This mechanism is a consequence of the competition between the sliding time along the steep slope of the highly asymmetric sawtooth potential and the correlation time of the dichotomous noise.

Self-organized networks: Darwinian evolution of dynein rings, stalks, and stalk heads

Cytoskeletons are self-organized networks based on polymerized proteins: actin, tubulin, and driven by motor proteins, such as myosin, kinesin, and dynein. Their positive Darwinian evolution enables them to approach optimized functionality (self-organized criticality). Dynein has three distinct titled subunits, but how these units connect to function as a molecular motor is mysterious. Dynein binds to tubulin through two coiled coil stalks and a stalk head. The energy used to alter the head binding and propel cargo along tubulin is supplied by ATP at a ring 1,500 amino acids away. Here, we show how many details of this extremely distant interaction are explained by water waves quantified by thermodynamic scaling. Water waves have shaped all proteins throughout positive Darwinian evolution, and many aspects of long-range water-protein interactions are universal (described by self-organized criticality). Dynein water waves resembling tsunami produce nearly optimal energy transport over 1,500 amino acids along dynein's one-dimensional peptide backbone. More specifically, this paper identifies many similarities in the function and evolution of dynein compared to other cytoskeleton proteins such as actin, myosin, and tubulin.

Symmetry of deterministic ratchets

We consider the overdamped motion of a Brownian particle in an unbiased force field described by a periodic function of coordinate and time. A compact analytical representation has been obtained for the average particle velocity as a series in the inverse friction coefficient, from which follows a simple and clear proof of hidden symmetries of ratchets, reflecting the symmetry of summation indices of the applied force harmonics relative to their numbering from left to right and from right to left. We revealed the conditions under which (i) the ratchet effect is absent; (ii) the ratchet average velocity is an even or odd functional of the applied force, whose dependences on spatial and temporal variables are characterized by periodic functions of the main types of symmetries: shift, symmetric, and antisymmetric, and universal, which combines all three types. These conditions have been specified for forces with those dependences of a multiplicative (or additive-multiplicative) and additive structure describing two main ratchet types, pulsating and forced ratchets. We found the fundamental difference in dependences of the average velocity of pulsating and forced ratchets on parameters of spatial and temporal asymmetry of potential energy of a particle for systems in which the spatial and temporal dependence is described by a sawtooth potential and a deterministic dichotomous process, respectively. In particular, it is shown that a pulsating ratchet with a multiplicative structure of its potential energy cannot move directionally if the energy is of the universal symmetry type in time; this restriction is removed in the inertial regime, but only if the coordinate dependence of the energy does not belong to either symmetric or antisymmetric functions.
